Weekends
Well friends, its Saturday morning and I’m sure that many of you are still in deep slumber at the time of this posting. Enjoy it, sleep is good and I think many people in today’s world do not get enough.
I’m sure that you all look forward to weekends as much as I do. After a hard week at work its that time when everybody tries to unwind and catch up on all those things that you just weren’t able to attend to during the week. For many, its also a time to attend to chores. Personally, I like to get chores out of the way from early so as to be able to have as much time for R&R which is veeery important to me.
People also seem to be much more relaxed on the weekend, I suppose that this is a direct result of not having to go to work. There is much less traffic on the road (especially on Sunday) and eveyone is dressed in casual garb. Even at the hospital, the pace is generally more relaxed, though if problems arise, they are addressed accordingly. I am on call so after this I have to go to the hospital to see the patients on our service, it’s the resposiblilty of the doctor on call for the weekend to see to the needs of the patients. After getting that out of the way, my chore today is going to the supermarket, something from which I derive absolutely no pleasure! But I guess someone has to do it.
Sundays are an even more sacred part of the weekend as the pace is even slower. Its been a tradition in my home over the years to have a fairly large breakfast on Sundays. Favourites include seasoned saltfish, Johnny cakes, liver and bananas, fried fish and others. The thought now has me salivating. I certainly will not be having anything as exotic this morning. Anyway, I don’t want to tarry for too long as I don’t want the hospital to page me. Whatever you do this weekend, enjoy it to the fullest. If I’m inspired during the course of the day maybe I will post something later. ‘Till such time…..
April 27th, 2002 at 11:38 am Dr. D you are torturing me - conspiracy with Mad Bull I see - so is that it now? Every time I read a blog I’ll hear of some exotic J’can foods? Both you are wicked; just plain evil. I remember the Sunday breakfasts quite well, you tell no lies.
April 27th, 2002 at 8:51 pm Dr. D., I hope you really and truly feel better soon. Take care of yourself.
April 28th, 2002 at 9:29 am Liver and bananas? Pppeeeeeeuuuuuuu!!!
April 28th, 2002 at 9:38 am YUCK!
April 28th, 2002 at 11:07 am I apologise for the ignorance of my bro and sis Dr. D - their dislike of liver and bananas is… inexplicable:) Its funny - I was talking about liver just yesterday while at work. As you know, if America is the great melting pot, Florida being the southernmost tip is where it all boils down - so there are so many different races residing here. A group of us were talking about food from our countries yesteday, and so far, the only other country that seems to have this as a favorite is Colombia. Anyway, you were asking earlier what I’m cooking this weekwnd - alas, I am boycotting the kitchen.. I’ve been sick all week with the flu - and feeling super lousy while having to work nonetheless, so I aim to eat out today as opposed to doing any work whatsoever! Y’hear me bwoy Midas - mi seh mi nah cook nuttin’. The options are either: 1. Chinese food 2. Italian food 3. Ribs What’s the vote guys? By the way - in true Seven fashion, let me just spread the word from now, for all who may be inclined to forget - one week from today is my birthday - my 34th!!! All e-cards will be accepted!
April 28th, 2002 at 2:44 pm Dearest Seven, all I can say is that great minds think alike. I have tried with your bro. MB, and unfortunately he has an inherent tendency to be unable to appreciate the finer things in this life that is so precious, the type of individual that we here in Jamaica refer to as a BHUTU!!! Unfortunately, by close association through the years, I suppose that this lack of class has also afflicted his poor wife Natty. Enough said. Well, I am only just getting back from Sunday rounds at the hospital at 1:30PM and just finished having BREAKFAST (is that a life or what?) and guess what I had? LIVER and GREEN BANANAS!!! Oh, it was to die for as that person who does that column in the newspaper loves to say. Seven, sorry to hear that you are not well, had I known I could have dropped you an on line prescription. I will not forget your birthday and I will make sure Rufie sends you a message as well. Pity that you were unable to enjoy the liver with me, but perhaps next time. Whatever you have for dinner today hope that you enjoy it. Hail up Midas, since Seven is not cooking maybe you can rustle something up yourself? What’s your best dish dude???
April 28th, 2002 at 3:46 pm Dr. D you and Seven can stay! I’m with MB and Natty all the way regarding the liver, but not the bananas! Yuck! Yuck! and Double Yuck! I feel the same way about kidney and lite too,(goodness - just typing the words makes me nauseas!) as I do about ackee & saltfish and avocado (referred to as pear in J’ca!)- blech! Disgusting! By the way, hail up Seven and Midas! I don’t blame you, I’d not want to be in your kitchen today either if the menu consisted of any of the above
April 28th, 2002 at 7:58 pm Dear Dr D and Seven…all i can say is “Stupid minds rarely differ..”
April 28th, 2002 at 10:10 pm Natty - you’re tempting fate!!!! Is alright - I’ll get you back later!:) Rufie, are you trying to tell me you don’t like ackee and saltfish either???????????? No Way!!! Half yu life gawn girlfriend! Dr. D - do believe the correct paraphrase is “Great Minds Think Alike!”
April 28th, 2002 at 10:20 pm Seven, I hate to disappoint you as you have been on my side thus far re. liver and bananas. I must admit that Rufie and I are truly siblings as I myself do not eat ackee and saltfish either, so I guess that according to your reckoning, half of my life gone as well. I do love saltfish, its the ackee that gets to me. All in all, I’m glad that my simple blog ideas are entertaining us all.
April 28th, 2002 at 11:26 pm Dearest Seven, you are quite correct, I will eat the saltfish as long as it is separated from ackee - yuck, yeck and double blech! I hate it, I hate the colour, the texture, the smell - it reminds me of pear - blech, too! Yes, I know how you love them and used to make sandwiches - I could never understand why! Still am amazed!
April 29th, 2002 at 8:21 am If nothing else, it is quite clear that the Jamaican massive commenting on this blog “love dem belly bad.” Who ever thought that a simple thing like liver and bananas would have proppted such chatter?
April 29th, 2002 at 11:39 am Dr D? you know how it go? “NYAMIE NYAMIE…LICKIE LICKIE” I myself am allergic to ackee…i cant even smell it.
April 29th, 2002 at 12:03 pm I am speechless - what kind of Jamaicans are you? Ackee - for those of you who are not Jamaican - is our national fruit (isn’t it guys?) - we cook it with saltfish (pickled codfish) to make up our national dish - it is also excellent with bacon - it is a delicacy!!!!!!!!!
April 29th, 2002 at 4:02 pm Lawd a massy (Lord have mercy), clearly I need to address the issue of Jamaican foods one day as a topic in order to “full de belly” (fill the stomach) of these Jamaican bloggers. Burrrp!! (excuse me)
April 29th, 2002 at 10:46 pm Ok, I’ll have the last word. Remember all, what I say is FINAL! Awoah! Ackee is the ambrosia, the food of the Gods, and as Seven said, its best with bacon and ham… You should try it with Christmas Ham!!! And Rufie, you too were right. All men and women who have properly evolved would never let kidney and (ugh) lite pass their lips. Those who do so are at best only near-humans and are known here in Jamaica by the term “TROG!!” Enough said
April 30th, 2002 at 1:56 am Yow dutty dwoy MB,even though you were the one who got the big up for setting up the technical aspect of this site, IS FE ME(MY) own blog, as such I ALWAYS have the final word. And by the way, I wonder is who you referring to as any rass TROG? I feel I going send two yute wid some M 16 down yu yaard fe dust yu out if this disrespec fe big man contines!!!!:-) That felt good:-)
July 26th, 2003 at 1:36 pm i am allergic to ackee and my eyes swell, my throat itches my tongue swells this all happened when i got pregant with my 2nd child. So the ackee allergy is real. i am a jamaican, born and bred and it only happened when i got pregnant.
