Some thoughts about blogging.

Posted in General on July 31st, 2002 by Dr. D

It has been perhaps about four months since I have started this blog thing. Some things I have learned from it have been positive. I must say that although most of the blogs that I read are authored by people that I do not know, I feel as is if I know enough about their personalities by the way they express themselves in their posts.

Another thing that I have found out, is that although we may have differences in our cultural backgrounds, at times we react to situations similarly and may share the same views on a point. At other times, however, we can be quite opposed in our opinions.

One thing I like about this blog/internet stuff, is the ease with which we can ’surf’ from one country to the next in order to read the posts of my ‘friends’, if I may be permitted to use the term. By the simple push of a few buttons, I stay in Jamaica and read my bredren Mad Bull, who really is in a class by himself (respec my yute!), because he is one of my close friends. Then I fly over to California and see what wKen has to say for himself, as well as shelli. I can then cross the Atlantic (which takes about 8 1/2 hours by air from here) to England and read Shelagh.

If ever they were take nominations for the best female blogger, I think I would have to give my vote to kd. In my opinion, she is truly the Queen of bloggers and I’ve grown to like her.

One thing that can be a bit confusing about blogging, is the issue of gender. Sometimes, by a blogger’s internet name, it can be difficult to decide whether the person authoring the post is male or female. No offense intended folks, it is only this week that I realized that both Blue Wolf and Red Eagle are ladies. I had assumed that they were males. Anyway, with the way how things are changing in the world today, the issue of gender will soon not be an issue at all, but then again…..

Anyway, that’s not the point of this post. I think I just want to say that I have started to enjoy this business, and I try to keep my readers coming back for more by making entertaining posts.

Change of thoughts. Is is just me? Or, does the weather feel unusually humid, hot and still these last few days? It feels to me like the type of weather that is associated with a Tropical Depression! Oops, let me not ‘goat mouth’ the weather now. It really feels awful tonight. (The fact that I have not showered yet, does not make it any better either.)

Last but not least, I went to Shelli’s site earlier and took a Geek test. According to the test, I am only 5% Geek. If you do the test, you may understand why I’m only 5% Geek. It does ask a lot of questions about computer related stuff, and I’m pretty dismal in that area (a non-tekkie). You can do the Geek test at fuali.com. BTW, fuali stands for “Fucked up and lovin it!” (I thought the name was radically cool!) That’s all for now folks. Keep on blogging. Tomorrow is a hoilday here, so I’ll see what I can come up with, OK?

P.J. Discloses Enquiry costs.

Posted in General on July 31st, 2002 by Dr. D

44.6 Million Jamaican dollars (about 1 million U.S. dollars) were spent on the West Kingston Commission of Enquiry! This was disclosed by our Prime Minister in Parliament yesterday.

The Commission of Enquiry was established by the Prime Minister following the the loss of 27 lives in gun battles from July 7-10 last year in West Kingston.

The commission heard evidence from September 2001 to April of this year. It was chaired by a Canadian, Justice Julius Isaac. He received a payment of Ja.$700,334. His living expenses which include accomodation at the Courtleigh Hotel totalling Ja.$479,000 takes the total cost for having him at the enquiry, to Ja.$1,227,147. It is pointed out that he was not paid a salary as the Canadian government continued to pay him while he was here. He did, however, receive payment of Canadian $130/day for the total 184 days of the enquiry. Now, his remuneration, in all honesty, does not seem too extravagant to me. The other two Commissioners, Dr. Hyacinthe Ellis and Dr. Garnet Brown received approximately Ja.$3 and Ja.$2 million respectively for their work.

Velma Hylton,Q.C., Counsel for the Commission, received a total of Ja.$4.795 million for her labour. I won’t bother to go any further.

What did this enquiry prove? As far as I remember, no one was found responsible for the loss of 27 lives, many of whom I am sure were innocent civilians. Lambs slaughtered in my opinion. It seems to me, the only people who benefitted from this whole fiasco, were the legal figureheads. Enough, enough, is all I’ll say. Enough of the bullshit! Maybe I should have done law……..P.S. (1 Million U.S. dollars may not seem like a lot of money to my foreign readers, but remember, we are a poor nation, and at the end of all of this, no rass justice has been done the way I see it!) The world is really not round indeed, is it?!?!

Some Prose.

Posted in General on July 30th, 2002 by Dr. D

I don’t know how many of you know, but when I was younger, I had tried my hand at poetry. Sometimes there were hits, other times, well. This evening I found myself thinking, and I was trying to come up with a post. Suddenly, I found myself trying to get my thoughts to rhyme. The following resulted….

The day was routine, like many others,
The usual toil at work, sometimes such a bother,
The sun shineth brightly, a sweltering heat.
Summer is here, come, beckons the beach.

Don’t bitch about a routine day,
Excitement may come, in a troublesome way.
I see some patients, and write a few scripts
The doctor is working, and healing the sick.

I leave my work for the comforts of home,
No blog post as such, and so my mind roams.
I stare through the window, in my underwear,
I hear some birds chirping as they fly through the air.

Evening is coming, the day shall soon end
What to do tonight? Perhaps call a friend.
My dinner is eaten, enjoyed to the max.
For providing me nourishment, I give God thanks.

I’ll go and shower after typing these words.
The thought of cool water’s, a refreshing lure.
Another day is over, I feel I’m at peace,
With God and my fellowman, I can now go to sleep.

Strange referrals

Posted in General on July 29th, 2002 by Dr. D

Well, I’m going through another period where I don’t have any great post to make. I have spent time reading the newspaper, reading other people’s blogs, but still, nothing inspiring. I don’t really like to take stuff from other peoples sites anyway, I prefer to have a certain amount of originality. That’s just me, I don’t necessarily like to ‘follow the crowd’ so to speak. Well, I decided to look at some of the strange Google and Yahoo search referrals to this site.

Photos of females passing shits, Female kicking doctor balls, Middle aged erection photos, Falling in love with a doctor, The doctor took off my pants, Undress I need to feel your belly and check your bottom.

These are a few of the ones that I selected. It seems to me that people are searching the net to find the most bizarre stuff. I guess that we have a lot of people out there with pretty weird ideas and what a better place to satisfy these strange minds than the internet. It really is loaded with every possible deviation that could cross your imagination. I’m sure I’m not providing you with information that you don’t already have.

I think that the point I’m trying to make is that sex, whether real or virtual, sells, and is more than readily available, by punching away at your keyboard. Now, please don’t get me wrong, I’m not necessarily knocking this, as I am by no means a prude myself (though I don’t think my mind is warped either). But just a question, where do some of these people making these strange searches get their kicks? I guess it takes all kinds to make the world up eh?

Perhaps, I should ask another question. It probably has been addressed many times before, but nevertheless, how do you feel about sex being available on the internet? Most of these sites require a declaration that you eare 18 years or over, but that doesn’t stop an 11 year old boy or girl from accessing this stuff, does it? I guess it’s something that those of you raising children will have to curtail. On one hand, your kids should be computer literate, but on the other, you don’t need to expose them to all the gory details of sexual devaition too early in their childhood.

I think that as the world becomes more cosmopolitan, kids are being exposed to this type of information at a much earlier age, the movies, MTV (which is basically simulated sex in my opinipon) and cable are all full of it. I suppose it boils down to being good responsible parents, and though I have no children yet, that doesn’t make me exempt either. Anyway, enough about this. Any comments?

Another Day at the Beach!

Posted in General on July 28th, 2002 by Dr. D

I had mentioned in a post earlier this week that some of you readers may think that I am a beach bum with a medical education. Perhaps you are right. I decided to go to the beach again today. This time, I went to Hellshire. I took Bert, Mad Bull and MBJr. with me. Now, I prefer to go to the ‘low profile’ area of the beach, simply because there are just too many hustlers attacking you once you decide to go to the ‘high profile’ section of the beach, which is also always much more crowded. Something I don’t particularly care for.

Anyway, I note that the Authorities have put up posts so you can no longer park in the low profile area of the beach. If you wish to go to that section, you have to park the car on the road and walk in to the beach. I did not feel comfortable doing this, so I went to the high profile part.

Rass! The usual onslaught from before we even stepped out of the car. Hustlers everywhere, even finding a space to park has a man ‘looking a money’ (trying to get a tip). Oh, I hate it. Were it not for the Fish and Festival, I doubt that I would ever return to Hellshire. Lime Cay is a far more pleasant experience, but the fish they cook there is just not as good as at Hellshire (at least in my opinion). Anyway, the day was quite hot and did not turn out bad, so it wasn’t a bad way to spend a few hours of the Sunday.

Just as we arrived, I saw a man with a huge crab that he had caught. Unfortunately, I forgot the digicam or this beast would have warranted a snap. It seems to me that the claws would each yield about a pound of sweet flesh. Man, was it huge.

The water was quite warm, but the beach was a bit too crowded for my liking. Well, that’s how it usually is on Sunday.

The salty water has certainly helped to clear my sinuses a bit, so I hope that during the course of this week, I will be able to put this Upper Respiratory affliction that has been haunting me for the past week, behind me.

Unfortunately, tomorrow spells W-O-R-K. The good thing is that Thursday is a holiday, and I’m not on call, so who knows where the summer breeze may blow me? I haven’t fully made my mind up yet, but Frenchman’s Cove sounds like a damn good choice! Time will tell.

New Look!

Posted in General on July 28th, 2002 by Dr. D

I spent the better part of Saturday night down at Mad Bull’s pen having a few drinks and trying to beat the extreme heat that we have been experiencing. Mad Bull offered to give my site a little dressing up. As you who read this site often should know, I am a fan of natural beauty. So we decided to give the site a kind of island look. I like it and I hope you all do as well. Let me know what you think folks!

Government “Boots Up”.

Posted in General on July 27th, 2002 by Dr. D

This one was sent to me by a friend in the U. K. I found it pretty funny and thought I’d share it with you. Hope you haven’t already seen it in the wealth of e-mail jokes that circulate on the net.

The government announced today that it is changing it’s emblem to a condom (boots). This is because a condom more clearly reflects the government’s political stance. A condom stands up to inflation, halts production, destroys the next generation, protects a bunch of pricks, and gives you a sense of security while it’s actually screwing you!Comments are welcome on this.

Wrong Address!

Posted in General on July 27th, 2002 by Dr. D

Well, I feel like a new man this morning. Perhaps it was the effect of rest and knowing that I am not going into work until Monday, but I feel so much better.

I took a friend of mine from school days out last night. Let’s call him Bert. He now resides in The Cayman Islands. He is staying with relatives in an area called Montgomery, just a few minutes drive into the hills above my home. I told him that I would pick him up at about 9:15 PM.

I drove up into the driveway at the address he gave me. It was a nice looking home, as are most of the houses in the area. There was a scruffy dog in the garage barking at me, so I did not alight from the vehicle. Three cars were parked in the driveway. After about five minutes, I did not see any movement or anyone coming to the door, so I tried to call Bert on my cellular phone. For some strange reason, the call would not connect. I tried about three times with the same result. Eventually, I blew the car horn once (something I dislike doing, as I think it is poor manners) but still no one came out.

I tried calling him again, as I started to wonder if everyone was gone to bed. He answered. He said that he would be right outside. Another five minutes or so passed, still no sign of Bert! I started to wonder, is it that the house was so large that it could take him so long to reach the front door. We do have some large homes in this country, but this would be rather unusual. My cell rang. It was Bert. He asked me where I was. I said on the driveway. He said that he was outside, but he did not see my car. I asked him how many cars were on the driveway. He said two. Oh shit! I then realized that I was at the wrong address. I turned the engine on and made a swift exit from the people’s place, after all, if the owner had come out front, there may well have been a query as to what I was doing in the driveway.

I did find the right address. I had made a wrong turn at a crossing and ended up just around the corner. He laughed at me, saying that if the owner of the home was an armed trigger happy Jamaican, I might have caused gunfire to erupt. An ominous thought indeed.

Anyway, we headed down the hill, initially to eat some Chinese food at Dragon Court Restaurant. We arrived there at 9:50 PM, only to be greeted by a CLOSED sign! I was pissed, but there wasn’t much I could do. Eventually, I decided to drive by the Terra Nova Hotel as they usually have a Poolside Lime on Friday nights. It wasn’t as crowded as it usually is but we were greeted by a waiter very promptly, much to our delight as we were both raw (hungry).

I decided to have the fish and chips and Bert went with the Jerked Chicken. Both are served with fries. I had a couple VX and Pepsis (naturally). Bert is not a drinker and he had sodas. We enjoyed the food and sat there having a lot of man talk. We chatted about all sorts of stuff and caught up on personal happenings with each other since we last saw one another the year before. We tried to get a few other guys from school days to join us, but everybody declined. Eventually, we left and headed back home at about midnight. All in all, it was not a bad evening at all. I think the Rum may have helped to wash the residual flu virions out of my system.

It’s Saturday, and I’m not working. It’s the peak of Summer. How about the beach? Sounds good to me. Any takers?

On a final note. I saw in the newspaper today where a number of Giant Squid were beached in JaLolla, California. It is thought that the squid were probably following prey, perhaps grunion, a small fish, and washed ashore alive. They were apparently unable to get back into the water and died. Too bad. About nine tons of dead squid were reported to have been moved by city authorities. I wonder if any of my readers from California heard about this? wKen? Anyway, enjoy your weekend. Later.

Update.

Posted in General on July 26th, 2002 by Dr. D

I must say that I was very pleased by the amount of get well wishes I received via my blog, many from people that I do not even know. Thank you all again. I am feeling much better, but still not quite myself as yet. I hope to make it to the beach on the weekend, the salty air and water should help me to decongest and ‘clear my sinuses’.

I guess it must be Murphy’s Law. I have mentioned recently, that my unit at work is shortstaffed at the moment. Well, everytime that this happens, the workload seems to escalate and we get our share of more ill patients. As a result of this, I have not been able to take any time off on account of not feeling well. Groan.

Today will prove a long day as well, as Friday is one of the busiest days in our schedule (do I hate that, on a day when things should be winding down for the weekend). Anyhow, no use grumbling, I will simply brace myself for the day, at least it’s not my turn to teach the students today. I did that on Wednesday, with a hoarse voice and runny nose!

Well TGIFF. Note the extra F. If you can’t translate it, tough! It’s a true reflection of how I feel and praises to the Almighty, I am off this weekend. I am looking forward to driving out of the hospital this evening for a well deserved two days off! (Pardon me if my thoughts seem to be a bit screwed up, I think you can understand what I am trying to get across.) Hey, I almost forgot, next week Thursday is a public holiday, Emancipation day! That is something to look forward to also, and my name is NOT on the rota. (BIG GRIN!!!) (Anybody who may be reading this rant which really equates to nothing, must think that I am some sort of medically educated bum! You may well be right!)

I am still in need of something decent to post about. The newspaper failed again. Perhaps over the weekend or this evening I will come up with a topic. Before I close, I would just like to wish all of the Jamaican athletes who are participating in the Commonwealth Games in Manchester, all the best of luck. Continue to make the yellow, green and black flag fly high in the sky. Have to get ready for the four letter word folks (work i.e.) Later.

Nothing really.

Posted in General on July 25th, 2002 by Dr. D

I’ve been a bit under the weather the last few days because of a pretty bad bout of flu. It seems to be checking now, I think this is the best I have felt all week, but I’m still not firing on all cylinders yet. It was just a reminder as to how awful viral illnesses can make a person feel, SICK TO RASS!!

Because of this flu, I did not bother to do any post yesterday because I had nothing to write about and I really preferred to rest last night. Rest is really the only thing that helps flu. Going to work, of course, has not made it any better. Anyway, as they say, no rest for the wicked! (Who, me? Don’t answer.) Perhaps I should try the remedy that was suggested on the Jay Leno show last week. For those of you who don’t know what I refer to click here. At least, if it doesn’t cure the flu, all I can say is that it was fun trying.

I looked through the morning paper today, to see if I could find something to post about. But I must say that I did not find much. There were some controversial stories, but most of these topics have been exhausted already, gay lifestyle, death penalty, crime, crime, more crime. After a while, if one is not careful, blogging will become repetitive. I do like to keep readers entertained. Others take the approach of not really caring as they do this thing for their own sake and no one elses. Having said this, I really don’t have a post as such. Just a note to let you all know that I’m still around. Maybe later I’ll have something to stimulate some healthy discussion. ‘Till such time, tek care.
