Careers, Weekend happenings, and other stuff…

Reading the Outlook Magazine of this morning’s Sunday Gleaner has provided me with more on which to chat. There is an article entitled, “Earning top dollar”. Basically it gives guidance about the sort of career that you should be looking to get into if you want to be among the big earners. It says, “The survey of the Jamaica Employers’ Federation shows that the top income earners are those who find employment in finance, insurance and human resource development.” Well, I guess I made a big mistake when I chose Medicine. No, in actual fact, though a certain degree of financial stablity is a good thing to have, it has never been my intention to be rich, certainly not on account of the practice of Medicine. The way I see it, being comfortable is fine, once you find yourself in a position in life where you feel fulfilled by your work and you are happy (and not to mention in good health). There are so many wealthy individuals in the world today who are unhappy. If happiness and health could be paid for, then rich individuals would be beaming from ear to ear and always in the peak of health, nuh true (don’t you agree)? Moving along.

This weekend has been irie (good) so far. Plenty of good food, good company, and lots of good vibes at Lime Cay yesterday. In fact, I may have overindulged a bit, but I guess sometimes you have to allow yourself to live a little. Life is really short and I think you should aim to enjoy it to the fullest.

I see that the 2002 Miss Jamaica World beauty contest is airing on CVM TV tonight at 6 o’clock. I guess I may give it a prips (watch) and see how our girls are doing as I really have not watched a beauty contest in quite a while. Hopefully it will prove to be an eyeopener.

Congrats to St. George’s College on defeating the purple and whites from the ‘other side of North Street’, Kingston College, yesterday in the Roper Cup final. The blue and whiters (my alma mater) won two goals to one. “Ad Majorem dei Gloriam”. (To the greater glory of God.) That is the motto of my old high school.

Last but by no means least, Claude Mills has another good article in today’s Outlook magazine. It is captioned, “How to be like Joe”. Essentially, he gives some tips as to how to play the role of what we term a “Joe Grine” here in Jamaica. Now, as far as I understand it, a Joe Grine, or Joe for short, is the name given to the man that a woman in a relationship with another man, is cheating with unknown to her partner. Please correct me if my impression of Joe, is erroneous. Now, do not think that I have any intentions of taking up such a role, that is the furthest thing from my mind (then again, one never knows…), a little humour really.

What I found interesting, is some of the advice given in, “How to play Joe 101″. I do believe that most of what he has stated is sound. He recommends that one “should never play Joe Grind with a woman whose boyfriend is either very popular, or egad!, a member of the security forces”. One can only conjure up images in the mind as to the type of ‘Eradication’ that would occur if a poor ‘Joe’ was to be discovered by one of OUR Police! Talk about ‘bullets’ being fired, and by whom…

Another point that he makes, is that one should never seduce your friends’ girlfriends. I think that is excellent advice indeed. All I can say about that, is as far as I am concerned, any person that I hold in the esteem of a bredren (friend) has no need to fear. The way I see it, that barrier is NEVER to be crossed. Any man who does that sort of thing to a bredren is really no bredren at all, and quite a dishonourable individual IMHO. Indeed, were I to find myself in that sort of position, I would prefer for a total stranger to do that to me, rather than a friend. Anyway, I guess if a guy really wants to play Joe, then these things really do not matter.

I would also like to add a piece of my own advice to all potential Joes. Remember, the fact that she was cheating with you when you were indeed playing the role of Joe, is simply tesitmony that even if you win her over, the possibilty that she will do the same thing to you in the future, is always a real one. Bear that in mind, you hear?

Anyhow, the Sunday is not yet over and work starts back tomorrow, so enjoy the rest of it, seen (you understand)?

I think that cheating on a commited relationship is always a bad idea. I can understand why people choose to do it, but the potential for causing serious pain and stirring up trouble is just to much of a risk for what you get from it. Better to be honest and end the commitment first, before starting up something new, or find a way to make your existing relationship more fulfilling. I don’t need that much drama in my life.

Its great to know that the ‘Light Blues’ are showing the ‘purples’ from KC, just who the real North street footballing power has been all along. As for that bit on the ‘joes’ of this world, I agree with you totally.
