Wearing white after Labour Day?
As I am a Jamaican now living in the great USA, I have come across many suggestions regarding women not wearing white after Labour Day; the public holiday celebrated today and annually on the same date.
Does anyone out there know what not wearing white represents? or for that matter wearing white…what are you actually going against?
I am completely at a loss as I really don’t know. Can anyone tell me the significance?
Thanks Mad Bull, I had no intention of adhering to anything that I didn’t approve of, so no worries where that is concerned - couldn’t really care less frankly!
September 2nd, 2002 at 8:32 pm Hi, Rufie, glad to see you… I don’t know the answer, but we’ll have to see if we can get an answer…
September 2nd, 2002 at 8:47 pm Ok, Rufie, just kidding you… You know that I know everything. It is an old custom, and it was all about fashion. In easter, people used to start to dress in pastels and whites, sort of to bring in the summer if you like. When summer was ending, then they’d start to wear the light reds, the tans, the light oranges… You see, fall was starting, school went back into session…. and in the U.S., they experience far more change in the weather, and so there was this little rule about the change in fashion too, you know. Thats about it. It isn’t really adhered to anymore, as people don’t really care what others think about what they’re wearing anymore, plus you are from Jamrock! Just wear what you want…Later…
September 3rd, 2002 at 8:50 am Rufie, welcome to the blog world. Fret not, I will link you on my site soon. It will take a while before you start to get comments but do not despair. Mi love, wear whatever colour you feel like. It really matters not IMHO!
September 4th, 2002 at 10:02 pm I did some light reading on this subject. Appearently every link I followed, it is a mystery how the no-white shoes after labor day began. Myself never paid any attention to the myth of no white shoes, nor has any one ever called me on wearing white shoes. Article on white and labor day. Welcome to blogspace and the world of blogging.
September 5th, 2002 at 12:08 pm I agree with Madbull. ‘Be yourself no matter what they say.’ And that is simply in reference to dressing in a way that you feel great about you no matter what people might think or say.
August 4th, 2003 at 12:05 am Actually, the whole “no white shoes” thing started after World War Two, in an effort to control fashion and “quiet the riots” of the people. Government officials believed that if they could achieve domination of people in a more subtle way, they could eventually have more control over people in more drastic effects. I am completely against it, and think that you should be able to wear whatever you want, whenever you want. After all, they wouldnt sell white shoes all year around if you were only allowed to wear them half the time.
September 4th, 2003 at 9:53 am Thanks everyone for your comments and ideas as to the white after Labour day, I am the same as rufie and come from Zimbabwe and this white after labour day thing means nothing to us, but the other day a co-worker had a lot to say to me for wearing white shoes, the funny thing was she had no clue as to the reason why you shouldn’t and we are now in Canada. My feelings on the subject who gives a damn, wear what you are happy wearing and to hell with what people say!!!!
