TO BE BROWN OR NOT TO BE…IS THAT THE QUESTION?
I was just watching “Man Talk” on t.v. The title of it was “The Crowning of the Browning”. I dont know why people waste time talking about this as to me it is like the size of your foot…you can’t change it! All the talk about if black men prefer brown girls is such a waste of time.
If some black men prefer brown and white women instead of really dark skinned women it aint their fault. I think they should have a seance and bring up their grandmothers and mothers, fathers and grandfathers, great and great great grand, as this is where it all began. ” Dont marry no picky picky head bwoy”….” ah want you to marry a nice clear skin girl so that you can have pretty babies”. Why curse them about what they cannot help?

However, when you are discriminated against and suddenly you find the power in your hands, try not to repeat history on the other side of the fence!
February 1st, 2003 at 7:25 am You’re quite right. The black man of today is the product of his society. One hundred years ago, the British colonists were in power here. They were the ruling class, and they used the various means that they had at their disposal to spread a philosophy that would perpetuate their power. One of the ideas they spread was that of white being right, brown being ok and black being distasteful. Since they were on top, and everybody aspires for better for themselves and their children, people were brainwashed into trying to lighten the skin color of their offspring, and to straighten their hair, and to reduce the thickness of their lips. Of course, the way to do that was to marry the lightest person you could find. This mindset has been passed on to the adults of today. That is why it is important to talk about it. The individual will have preferences for a lighter skinned woman now, but if people talk about this phenomenon and the reasons for its being so prevalent, and also stresses that it is not necessarily the right way to think, the adults of today can consciously try not to pass on those ideas to their children. Then the world can be a better place in the future. Also, they can be cognisant of their preferences and try to counteract their effect upon their everyday dealings with others, trying to be fairer to all people. I think that the last point you made is quite important. So white people used to hold down black people… Things have changed. Black people should try not to do the same thing as the whites of old. Try to live in harmony with them rather to treat them like some evil, wicked, alien race to be despised, distrusted, and reviled. If they can do that, it will show that they (black people) are very big people indeed. If they fail in this, they are proving that they are no better than the white people of old. Remember, it is christian to forgive.

Let me add that as a Dermatologist practising in this country that has a black majority, I have encountered the ‘browning phenomenon’ frequently in my work. This is a situation where people in an attempt to lighten their skin colour, buy various topical preparations to bleach their skin. These products have a variety of names including Lexus, Mercury, Movate, Lemon Gel Cream, Fair and White etc. These products are made in First World countries and marketed in Third World countries where there are people of colour.Please do not feel I am blaming the manufacturers for this problem, this is a problem with the BLACK people themselves, it is a situation of poor self esteem. Not only dop these products bleach, but they have other harmful effects on the skin as well, including the development os stretch marks, acne and they thin the skin also. what can sometimes happen when they do this long term is the development of a paradoxical darkening of the skin called OCHRONOSIS which frequently shows up over the knuckles. This is often permanent and darker than their original skin colour! As Mad Bull said, this thinking has been handed down from colonial days, and in all honsesty, though many people of colour have been able to put this type of mentality behind them, there are still many who wish to become ‘brownings’. They feel they are more capable to attract a partner, get a job and will be considered generally more attractive if they are of a lighter hue with a lovely head of ‘tall’ hair! Unadulterated bullshit! Then again, if I get myself involved in discussions with people of a darker complexion about this issue, who feel this way inclined, I am liable to be told that I should not say anything, because I am ‘brown’ myself with ‘pretty’ hair. But, a so God mek me, there was no bleaching in my case, mine is a ‘natural bleach’. Anyhow, this business of colour of skin etc. will be with us for quite a long time. What needs to be done is to try as much as possible to disregard skin colour and see people as individuals judged on character and virtues. Lets us look at each other as human beings rather than black, white, blue or pink! To hell with skin colour!
