COMPLETED!!
Well, at last I have finally finished typing the slides I want to make for a talk on Eczema that I have been asked to give to a group of doctors in Portland the weekend of March 1. It has been haunting me as I had no motivation to make the slides. I think that was because I teach this topic to medical students literally every five weeks and I am now thoroughly bored to talk about it. Furthermore, I am being asked to talk for 1 HOUR!!
Now, from previous experience, I know that most people have very short attention spans. After about 15 minutes, the average person is looking out the window, sleeping or thinking about sex! They really don’t care one fart about what you have to say and are looking forward to hear that the talk is over. Anyhow, maybe I can insert a few slides of skimpily clad females to keep the audience awake!
They are putting me up at Frenchman’s Cove for the night. I haven’t been there since the start of the year, but, it is one of my favourite spots in the island to relax and recharge my batteries. So, that takes care of the last weekend in the month as I will be going to Portland from the Saturday in order to talk afresh the Sunday morning. I had better not have too much Appleton VX the Saturday night as I may not be able to wake up!
Tomorrow, is my last day at work for the week!
This is because I have been invited to attend a weekend conference on Acne in Miami, all expenses paid. So, why de hell not? Man wid airline ticket will fly! I only hope Bushy does not push the GO button this weekend! No, him can nuh bodda wid it! (No, he can definitely not bother with that!) So I will be flying into the city with the Latina ladies this Friday afternoon. Who knows, I may just have a post to share with you all next week when I return.
I am actually not taking part in the planned social activities as I will be linking some bredrens in Florida and seeing family as well. So, all in all, it should be a pretty good weekend coming up.
I am a bit tired tonight, and I am teaching Nursing students on Leprosy tomorrow morning. So, let me go rest my weary ass. After all, I am just one body! Respec due.
February 20th, 2003 at 12:48 am Hey, the topic will be easy to talk about so you can focus on relaxing and having fun at the lovely place they are putting you up at, I looked at the gallery at that site and it is gorgeous!
February 20th, 2003 at 6:55 am Is being a doctor fun?
February 20th, 2003 at 7:45 am Yes Desiree, it is a very peaceful and pristine place. The parish of Portland is easily one of if not the most beautiful in Jamiaca. I can see myself not giving the damn talk and going to the beach for the time that I’m there!
bek, you have asked a rather strange question. Remember. Like any other job, Medicine is work. Healthcare is about helping people to get through illness, some not so serious, others can be life threatening. It is never easy or ‘fun’ to have to deliver bad news to patients or their loved ones.
On the other hand, when you see a patient leaving hospital in pretty good shape after having been admitted in a pretty poor one, it is always gratifying to know that you played a part in helping to make that person batter. You see, illness tends to make people very emotionally labile, they get anrgy, sad, anxious, depressed, afraid and even miserable. So when people are sick, quite often they are not at their best and unpleasant to deal with. I definitely think that the ‘high’ that I get after helping someone to get better is perhaps the ‘fun’ in medicine. People are very grateful to us for our successes ,and even our failures when they realise that we perhaps could not have done any more to help a patient. The interpersonal exchange is great, almost similar to the kind of camraderie shared when having drinks with my bredrens. So, in summary, there are times when there is no fun in medicine and others when it can be damn good, just like any other job. But I can’t say that I have any regrets yet, as I don’t think I see another profession that I consider as noble as this one, and that is a fact!
Sorry to have taken so long to answer such a short question.

February 20th, 2003 at 12:03 pm Sure Doc, I’d love to see your photos sometime when you have spare time, no rush, of course. Hey, have room for a friend to come too? (right, if only I could manage to get on down there for a stay at the beach, and then too… one night? Not near long enough considering the trip!)… I guess dreams are great motivaters… I’ll be motivated to some day get my butt on down there to check out the beaches…. some day….
