More taxes??? We caan tek it!!

As our government finds themselves in a situation that makes it more and more dificult to stay financially afloat and our country has a foreign debt that is climbing exponentially, we have been informed that we the taxpayers, are going to have our balls squeezed even more. The General Consumption Tax (GCT) on telephone services has been increased from 15 to 20%. So, it now costs more to chat, even my posting this here is costing me more than previously. A multitude of other consumer items that previously did not attract any GCT, are now being added to the list. This includes MEDICAL supplies and DRUGS!!

Here is an article that reports that Red Stripe will be increasing the price of its products as well. So, even the cost of a little buzz is going to go up. I guess VX will soon follow as well, and in all honesty, they can’t be blamed. The one that shocked me most on the list I saw in a previous paper was that WOODEN COFFINS are now going to attract the GCT! So, even in death, they still want to squeeze the very last they can get out of us!

I hope all those who ‘Logged on to Progress’ in the general elections last year will continue to sing the praises of this rather impotent (for want of abetter word) administration.

Having got that off my chest, TGIF, and even though it may be costing us more, I’m looking forward to a drink later. Have a good weekend all.

Like they say, death and taxes are inevitable. Now the two can go together! Texas does not have a state income tax, but that shortfall is made up with sky-high property and sales taxes. A tax by any other name still sucks. And of course the U.S. government takes a big chunk for itself.

Oh, and “the wages of sin are death.” But when they take taxes out, you just feel kind of tired all the time.

Sounds quite similar to an evil thing introduced here in the ’80s (I think) - the GST. The infamous 7% added to almost any goods or service over here. But I guess it would seem insignificant next to the 15 to 20% you mentioned . . . In Alberta, we’re lucky. I think we’re the only province that doesn’t have an additional provincial tax to deal with. Again, don’t quote me, but I think some provinces pay as much as 18% in total for most goods and services. It’s lasted because it’s true - ‘Only two things in life are certain: death and taxes.’

Regarding ‘death and taxes’ being the only sure things in life….my Father is a Chartered Accountant, I’ve heard him preaching this since I was a young boy.

Honestly, as a Jamaican, I don’t feel that those of us who pay taxes (as not everybody does! ) would complain so much if we would get some decent social services in return. We really get the crappy end of the stick where that is concerned. If you don’t have health insurance, if you don’t make plans to survive when you get older etc…. As we say here….you get weh de duck get!
