Linux vs. Windows

Check this out! I was just surfing around idly, minding my own business. I passed thru somebody’s blog, followed a link to Internet News and espied an article that caught my eye…

Apparently a UK based firm called Mi2g did a study and found that Linux and not Windows was the biggest target of overt attacks in terms of Server Operating systems. Apparently Linux is attacked three times more than Windows Server OSes.

I found that little tidbit of info astounding, until I started thinking about it… Firstly, there are probably more Linux servers in use on the Internet than there are of Windows Servers. I know that was the situation a year or two ago, probably that situation hasn’t changed. Also, each OS has holes, and their security is really dependent on the dedication their administrators show in the application of patches and in securing the boxes. This can be a full time job if you really want to get it right, and I suspect that many of the individuals and organisations that are running Linux Servers may not have the resources to properly protect their servers. Perhaps the Linux boxes that were attacked were not properly secured!

I wish that this article had been looking at which OS has the potential to be the more secure one of the two. That would probably have helped clear up the issue more for me.

You know what? I just looked at the byline… This article was written by a bredrin! Nuh Ryan from the Caribbean Cricket Blog! And I believe that he makes use of Linux too, you know! I can ask him for some info on this article! I think I will, and I will keep you posted!
