Sunday thoughts…

Well, I have just returned from the funeral….. you might remember that I had mentioned that my previous boss’ son was killed in Iraq this month. Well, he received military honours, the US Ambassador to our country was present and gave a short tribute. It was all very sad to me though, he was only twenty five. Also, being in the beautiful University Chapel (that is where I would like to get married, perhaps because the University has played a big part in my life since I first started studying there in 1983) got me a bit emotional under the circumstances. It brought back unpleasant memories of my Mother’s passing.
As a result, I am now here listening to one of my Kenny G CDs….so that speaks for itself…beautiful music to enrich the soul and inspire thought.
This picture was not taken in Aruba…in fact I took it in Grenada when I went there in November last year, it is of their crater lake the Grand Etang. The clamness of the waters are soothing to look at and perhaps inkeeping with my thoughts at this time. We were taken there as part of the island tour that was organized for us. I hope that the soul of this Jamaican-American soldier finds eternal rest and that his family will find comfort.
Another thing struck me during the funeral. Now, those of you who read here regularly will know that I like a good joke. In fact, in our regional Derm Association, I have gained a name as a standup comedian and I am ‘expected’ to give a couple jokes at the banquet that we culminate our conference with each year. Indeed, though I had not really planned it, I did give a couple of jokes this year in Aruba also. This joke about cell phones was one that I had shared with my colleagues at the Aruba banquet. It had them in gales. Now, why the hell is it that when people attend a funeral or wedding that they don’t turn the damn things off, or indeed, put them on tremble??? Every so often, some eeidat’s phone was ringing during the proceedings.
At the end of the service I went to pay my respects to my former boss. After saying how sorry I was to her, I tried to cheer her up a bit (she was also present at the banquet in Aruba and heard the joke), so I then said to her, “You should have asked the Priest to ask that all cell phones be put on Tremble!” To which she replied with a bit of a grin, “Indeed Dr. D. Indeed!”
To change moods a bit and shrug off the sombre mood, I went to Mad Bull’s blog and read his entry about weight loss. I found it pretty good, so by providing you a direct link to his blog, I am bigging up mi bredren for what I think is a good post. You are duty bound to read it and comment. With those words, I’ll say enjoy the rest of your Sunday night, and have a good week……I know those of you in the US will be cooking up turkey and sharing pleasantries with family for Thanksgiving later this week. Enjoy it. Later all.
November 23rd, 2003 at 11:12 pm Wow, I’m sorry the funeral was so hard, I can’t imagine. But I’m glad you had the opportunity to maybe bring a little cheer to someone in need. I may be the one in need someday, so keep those jokes coming!
