Quiet……

That’s the one word that sums up the weekend just passed. Yesterday I did not leave the the yard at all…the furthest I went was to the gate to put out garbage. Spent a fair amount of the day watching some TV…..a bit unusual for me as TV is something that I really do very little of. In the evening I started putting down some jottings for an article that I’m writing on the skin bleaching problem that we have here. As a Dermatologist, I see a fair amount of patients with side effects from the abuse of skin lightening creams…we are tired of talking about it. The article is not finsihed but it is a start.

In my reasearch for the article I was quite surprised to discover that skin bleaching is also very common in Indian women. Apparently it is commonplace for young women or eligible bachelors there to advertise when they are looking for husbands or wives. I actually saw some from newspapers…..”Fair skinned, well educated twenty three year old woman seeks husband…..” is not an uncommon opening to some of these ads. I also came across an interview with a mother who stated that if she has a daughter who is dark skinned she worries for her. It is not a problem with a son once he is well educated and can earn a decent living! If a daughter is too dark skinned she may not be able to find a good husband. See how much emphasis people can place on skin hues and there are some who feel it is of no importance? BTW, please don’t feel that I think that this way of thinking is good at all.

I don’t know if it is just me, but many of the sites I read have been very slow on posting…..maybe everyone is just going through quiet periods in their lives. I wanted to post myself yesterday, but nothing got me in the mood. Nothing wrong with that as I feel it is important to think sometimes. The pace of life occasionally does not give us enough time to keep in touch with the spiritual side of things.

Anyhow, I went to bed pretty early last night….’bout tenish, and I feel quite refreshed this morning. I wonder what this week brings? How are things in your corner of the woods?

Thngs are good here, thanks for asking. Busy, and very very very cold. With the windchill factor today the temp is -47!!!! I do not recommend coming for a visit in January, but it will warm up next month… will probably be in the -20s for the Arctic Winter games!!

A little too cold for my liking, but I manage to stay warm. We had 4″ of snow last night. Outside of the weather everything else is safe and preditable. I just finished an excellent book which I would like to recommend. It is an easy read and very insightful. Maybe I am wrong, but I have a feeling you will enjoy it….Soul Stories by Gary Zukav.

Randy…nice of you drop by. No I don’t know them …..(I believe I’d have much more planned for them than to simply post their pics here if I did! ) Nice way to start the week eh!? Desiree, I have never been to Canada, but if and when I do, it most definitely will NOT be in winter (even if the ticket is free!) Nadine, I hear you, I believe I have seen that book when browsing bookstores while I am abroad. If I read it I will let you know what I think. I never thought Mad Bull would be the one to be cracking the whip…isn’t that the work of the bull fighter!??

I’d be very interested in your article when your done with it if you don’t mind. That is so interesting. Change of pace? Why not apply for a fellowship here at the Mayo Clinic? We’d love to have ya! Warning: It’s VERY cold here! Summer is beautiful though!

Michelle, the article is going to be very basic….more patient oriented for a newsletter, geared towards telling patients not to bleach and what can be done to remedy the adverse effects. Our local association is putting on a symposium in March. I’ll be doing a talk on topical steroid abuse and incorporate the bleaching problem into it. But, if you really wish to I could e-mail the finished product to you. The Mayo Clinic….that would be nice. I wonder if they would consider lowly me appropriate material for such hallowed halls!?

Yes, e-mail it to me. I think it would be interesting. Of course you are appropriate material! I think so anyway!
