Me deh bout and a likkle chat about size!
Well, hail up all crew. If any of you been visiting recently and wondering where the posts are, is not cause me diss oono, but remember seh me deh pon holiday.
Well, the Air Ja flight on Saturday was pretty good. A bit bumpy as the weather was cloudy for about half the flight. But, we left on time and actually arrived ahead of schedule by fifteen minutes in Ft. Lauderdale. As usual, good to link up with family and the cohort of friends I have living here. I have been eating like I am expecting some famine or adverse winter weather to come. Oh, shrimp, lobster, fish. It is so hard to say no when it tastes so good. Diet will be enforced when I return.
I’m sure some of you are bored already, or probably pissed at mi likkle bumbo claat as you nuh deh pon holiday and you rass envy me since I am…. but if you aren’t too bored and want to hear more, then read on nuh…..
Florida hasn’t changed much since my visit here in November…probably just more new roads and buildings. Have made a few trips to the relevant malls, and mi Pops will be happy to know that I got everything on his shopping list. (Is a next ‘ting fe pack and carry dem back a yard now when is me one a fly!) Anyway.
You know, there are lots who say that size matters, and others who say it really doesn’t matter one fart. Yow, what kind of one track mind have you got?
A nuh dat me a chat bout man! The matter of size is on my mind…Without fail, every time I travel to the US, I find the expanse of this place just mind boggling. And I haven’t been to the West coast yet. Dah place yah caan done man. My mind then just drifts to Mad Bull and the small size of the Turtle Islands where he has recently taken up residence.
Now, not only is this United States large, but lots of things are about it as well. The roads are wide and seem endless. One can spend a phenomenal amount of time driving here in Florida. The concept of ‘nearby’ here is something more imagined than real.
I won’t even mention the size of food portions. I have come to the conclusion that many Yanks don’t feel satisfied when they go out to eat and have to pay money unless they walk out of the restaurant feeling like a first cousin of the Goodyear blimp to rahtid!
Trust me, if you dine here and you feel the portion was too small, you wuz robbed!
This evening, a bredren of mine, Dr. Spanish took me to eat some yardie food at a ‘local’ place here. I had a small red peas soup as starters followed by curry goat (hush Mad Bull) as the main course. Now, despite this being a Yaride place, they have adopted the Yankie sized portions. The ’small’ soup was easily the size of what I would eat as a regular bowl back home. There is enough curry goat in the fridge for tomorrow’s lunch. Yes, we told the girl dat we had a big rass dawg at the yard to feed and dat him love him Jamaican food. Nutten nuh go so. The dawg dem is me and Dr. Spansih!
Even now, about four hours after eating (it is now 1:49 AM here…dem deh pon Daylight saving)…I still feel fullish.
Arite, me getting tired now, but hear dis one. Sunday, mi cousin had a Jamaican man doing a likkle yard work for her planting flowers. She comes in to the house to ask me if I never heard the ‘excitement’ outside. So I said no. She tells me that the man doing the work just killed a three foot SNAKE
in the yard!!! Now, I saw the beast through the window of the house, what a serpent! No, no pics were taken despite having the Olympus on the scene. Like I always say, the only good snake is a dead one. Good ting seh is not me did buck it up.
Finally, I must report that the place where I am kotching most of the time (mi cousin) has no internet access at the moment, hence, I don’t know when next onoo going hear from me. Is a borrows me holding off mi bredren DELL now. And then, Monday coming is a holiday here…Memorial Day, so yu know seh everybody a go have sale. Money permitting, I guess the mall will see me again. All of you walk good you hear. I man gone go hold a sleep and get ready for another day of R&R as I head north to Delray Beach tomorrow. Back down this end Friday nite. Tek it easy.
‘Aint it great to be on leave!?
May 26th, 2004 at 9:16 am Good hearing from you while you are away - and your impressions of the States as you re-visit. I think Americans and Canadians too have too large of food portions in restaurants and there is a lot of dining out that goes on… hence, part of the problem behind the obesite that plagues these countries.

May 26th, 2004 at 9:16 pm Oh, Doc, we ARE served too much when we dine out. And a lot of us were taught to clean our plates, because we were fortunate to HAVE food. We’re at the point where DH and I could each order a house salad, or perhaps soup, and split an entree. We’re lucky we like the same foods. I can’t begrudge you your leave. We get to go in July, and I’ll see Hawaii for the first time. I would have prefered to go when it was cold at home, but we’re going for a nephew’s wedding. DH plans to snorkle, and I’m looking forward to walking along the edge of the surf. Enjoy your week off, and I hope you have a good Memorial Day!
