It’s all ’bout food…
Well, I won’t bother to link the news articles that abound highlighting the squabbles in the ranks of the JLP regarding the resignation of Eddie as chairman and leader. All it confirms (which is not news anyway) is that there has been nuff bad blood going on for a while. They need to rest dat, knock heads together and make strategic plans for the way forward, for the party and the country as a whole. Enough o dat.
We a chat ’bout food. Strange that I should be doing so at a time when I am still observing ‘dietary modifications’ eh. Well, the truth be told, me bruck out las nite still. Yes, I’m a man, damn determined when I wish to be also. But, at the same time, I admit, I can be weak. When temptation is set forth in front of me on a platter….me easy fe force. (I wonder what Mad Bull and Angry D check seh me a tink bout!?
)
Well, one of the girls at work can bake up a storm you see. I told her she has no problem, her sideline cook and curry long time. Supplement the medical income by opening a pastry business and she gone clear.
Well, yesterday, she brought some carrot cake for me. Apparently she had baked a rather large one as she was having people over, and some of de people had to cancel due to some shyte that came up. As a result, nuff carrot cake was left. So, she knows of my weaknesses and I was only too happy to accept. So, last nite after dinner which I will soon mention, I had a small slice….I did cut the icing off. Yes, like I said, me can give into temptation sometime.
Las nite I was asked by one of my med school friends to link up with a couple of the people from my medical class, the Class of ‘94. One of our colleagues was passing thru Ja on her way to the African continent where she is going to be taking up a position in Nigeria. (Bwoy, it look like is only me who naw have nuh excitement!) So, I decided to go. Was good to see a few faces that I hadn’t in a while. It was decided that we were going to ‘Sugardaddies’ on Hillcrest Avenue. I had never been there before, but had heard that the fare is edible. So I reached on. The place is not exactly the sort of ambience that I would be looking for were I to be carrying out a woman to dinner, but at the same time, it is not like a roadside bar either. Lets say it is OK.
Waiter comes and pours water and asks if we wish to order drinks. I’m the only one who goes alcoholic (any surprises?)….I had a Stripe. Eventually, he arrives with the menu and it never took me long to decide. But, it was approximately a half hour before we saw him again to take the order. Then he arrives and before he starts to take the order, him big up him chest and announce what and what deh pon de menu dat him nuh have….’No oxtail, no fried chicken, if you want jerk chicken I only have two servings left and is only leg and thigh, no breast etc…….’
Well, luckily for me, what I had decided to order, the curry goat, was available. But, no rice please, vegetables only. They were able to do that. A next half hour before we see food start emerge. Anyway, my goat tasted alright. But, I’m not so sure if I am impressed with the place. I would have second thoughts about going back there. Maybe more fitting for a lunch thing than dinner for me.
Yeah, is food me a post ’bout nuh. In the middle of mi breakfast, whole wheat bread, two slice of low fat cheddar cheese with strawberry jam, a half apple, a plum and a small glass of apple juice. (Am I dieting or just eating more healthy?)
Last on the items for food discussion is Jerk. Yes, jerk is a way of cooking here, not anything else that some of you might have on those one track minds!
(Good to keep the minds healthy still….) Well, you all know that my favourite spot to indulge in Jerk Pork is at Blueberry Hill just outside of Buff Bay. It is on a hill overlooking the sea. Nice vista to tek een while guzzling down a frosty Red Stripe on the way to or from Portland. Don’t expect anything fancy, jus good tasting food. Some of the ladies may not like it, is more of a ‘man’ spot. Well, someone has written a little article for the food section of the Gleaner today reviewing the good spots islandwide to go hold a jerk. (Dat sound suggestive eh….it deliberate still!) Well, he does mention the guy out by Liguanea who I used to patronize nuff when I was a student at UWI. And yes, him a de lick afta you beat some juice and waan hold a early AM food. Read the little article bout jerking, maybe you may learn a thing or two. And when next you pass thru these places in Jamaica, give the suggested spots a stop. Anyway, enuff of me and my food stories, I better go hold a fresh now and head out before I hear seh dem jerk me outta de rass work!
Lata.
July 1st, 2004 at 9:54 am That place has a serious problem. Poor service is probably the reason the Manor Park branch had to close. When my friend from Cayman came to Jamaica earlier this year and wanted “some real Jamaican fried chicken” we ordered take out from the Hope Rd. S. Daddies and after ordering from the phone…we went there to pick up. Standing at the window..nobody looks at you…they are standing there cussing about some customer on the phone and “iz what dem customah yah tek dis ting fah?…” about half an hour later i finally got her food which was DRY LIKE CHIP , like it di deh from the day before..we ended up dumping it. She eventually went to her cousin’s house where the cousin’s husband did up some “REAL JAMAICAN FRIED CHICKEN!”
July 1st, 2004 at 10:59 am Now I am hungry yy see!!!!!
July 1st, 2004 at 3:37 pm natty, this reminds me of a post I did in my first month of blogging in April 2002, entitled Customer Service in Jamaica! It is actually a pity though, if properly managed the place could do well. I tasted one of the french fried sweet potatoes that someone else had with fish and it was nice. Quite an unusual idea.
July 2nd, 2004 at 3:32 pm Mr Bernard better get his act together. When he opened Sugardaddies it was with much fanfare and promise, but sadly this will be the end result if consistent standards are not maintained. Now Dr D…..strawberry jam????? apple juice???? plum???? Take my advice. save the apple and plum for your mid morning snack so you can keep your blood sugar level stable througout the morning until lunch. (is who sound like the doctor here?????
July 2nd, 2004 at 6:59 pm Yamfoot, if you know the owner….Mr. Bernard, I would advise that you have a little word with him. I have heard others give his place negative reviews. Particluarly saying that the food is not bad, but the service rather slow. Like I say, it has potential but it shows that they need a bit of brushing up. Re the ‘diet’….mid morning snack??
