Mixed emotions…

tobagohillside.jpg

Yow, how is your day going so far? Well, mine is alright, but let me just share some thoughts. First off, I had mentioned that the nicer shots that I took in Tobago were running low, so I might not have had any more to post. Well, I still found another….taken from the same cliff overlooking the sea. I could easily see myself there enjoying the light breeze, looking out to the horizon and having a Red Stripe….well, Red Stripe hardly exists down South, so perhaps I would haffi hold a Carib or Stag. I did try both and found the Stag better. Hope you like this picture….not many left that can post.

Anyway, this morning I got out of bed at my usual 6:30…I could easily have slept for longer cause man tiyad still…I never made it home ’till 8:45 PM last night. When I am making my way towards the end of the passage from my room to go to put the kettle on inna de kitchen, I see not one, but TWO massive croaking lizards at the end of the passage!smily Now, those of you who been reading the site long enough know seh me and dem doh too keep company! And you waan see dem to….all a look pon me wid attitude…like dem a seh….”Pass if you bad nuh!” Anyway, eventually they both ran to hide behind pictures and I went to the kitchen to make my tea. Decided to forfeit the Earl Grey today and jus hold regular Lipton Yellow. The morning is nice and cool. According to my Galileo thermometer (maybe I will post a pic of it soon) its about 76 Farenheit now.

I log on to the computer (my regular routine) and scan through the Gleaner on line. Two stories got my attention. One makes me feel a bit sad, the other has me smiling.

Let me deal with the unhappy tale first. Seems three young men drowned in the Great River. Pity. Every now and again, this sort of thing happens. I can imagine how saddened their families are. I wonder to myself….was it that they really could not swim? Now, despite the fact that this country is surrounded by water, many of our people really cannot swim. Or, is it that this part of the river is really dangerous? Whatever it is, may they rest in peace in the arms of the Almighty.

Now, on to the one that made me smile. Jamaica has produced a number of comedians….Charles Hyatt, Oliver Samuels, Bello and Blacka are a few that come to mind. Rahtid, even yours truly has tried standup comedy…albeit with varying degrees of success! smily Yow, sometime dem laugh, sometime not. Is life, you caan win everyting….zeen? Anyway, I digress a bit. (Probably the tea working now, and I kinda like when a blog post is written spontaneously as the thoughts flood my brain.)

Any of you know another of our comedians…..name Tony Hendricks AKA Paleface? Well, Paleface a shock out I tell you. Apparently he was invited to take part in some Black Comedian Awards ceremony in the UK. Some of you might be wondering that it kinda ironic, cause him nuh look black at all. Well, that’s besides the point. Screw the fact seh him is a ‘white’ Jamaican…..remember our motto, “Out of many, one people.”

On the way back from Tobago, on account of BWIA’s slackness (I still haven’t written about it here), eventually, Air Jamaica had to rescue us. Well, guess who was on video there? Nuh de said Paleface. When I tell you, me and nuff people inna de vicinity who were watching the little screen with the headphones a laugh out rass pon de plane. All I can say is a hearty “Big Up” to the pale one.

So, I guess this morning I prepare to head out to the grind with mixed emotions. I hope the rest of the day is filled with happiness and laughter only, and as this is an equal opportunity site, may I wish the same for all crew who pass by here. Respec due! smily

    Hi Dr. D. I really like this photo. Reminds me somewhat of the view from Firefly one of my favorite spots in Ja. I would love to witness one of your comedy routines. You sound like a real comedian in your blogs. Anyway, I haven’t been blogging as regularly as I should but will post something this morning. Have a great day.

First time I was tasting it and I’m hooked. BTW I still can’t swim. Didn’t see why I should deliberately try to drown myself

    Interesting but true that the majority of island people cannot swim.Drownings always sad events.A few years ago 5 children drowned on their way home from school.The river burst and swept them away.I since have a new found respect for rivers

    Hey Dr. D. Very nice picture sir! It is really sad to hear about youngsters drowning…which is why I vow to start taking up swimming lessons once the summer comes around. You and stand-up comedian in the same sentence without the presence of the delimiter ‘not’, unheard of! {arf,arf}

    Hey Sunshine…where is Firefly? All of you who tink seh me caan mek it as a comedian, I will have you know I’ve had an audience in gales before (one time! ) So Scratchie, you have been introduced to the tea with an essence of bergamot eh!? You see seh ah nuh rubbish me a chat. Doh have Earl Grey everyday though…it loses its novelty when you have it too often. Its wonderful pon a Sunday when you kick back inna shorts and have the newspaper to read on the back patio. I am surprised to learn that you caan swim. Then again, your Bro-In-Law, who was also one of our blue and white classmates and has the distinction of being born on the same date and year as I am, used to be a non-swimmer also. I don’t know if he has corrected that deficiency. But, I remember a class trip to Dunns River Falls many years ago…..well, Ever C did not venture into water more than ankle deep. As I mention him, I must remember to give him a shout and wish him happy belated…..Ivan salted tings up for us. JDid, you must not give up the standup act….practice becomes perfect! To all the blue and white crew….the Class of ‘81 is having a brunch on December 12th. I expect that I can leggo some tickets pon onoo…only $500 Ja! (AD might vex…there I go using the blog for financial gain!) ) Proceeds in aid of Charity…I suspect Krueger. Donations are welcome if you caan mek it.

    Dr D. Can’t believe you don’t know where Firefly is. It is Noel Coward’s (New York song writer/playwriter) former home back in the 1940’s 1950’s thereabaouts. It is in Galina Point in think before Oracabessa. IT is now owned by Chris Blackwell. I don’t know if it’s open to the public any longer since MR. Blackwell’s ownership. However, it is perched on top of this hill overlooking the harbor. When I first visited Firefly, I thought I had seen scenery, but when I looked out and saw the eastern coastline and the caribbean sea, the lushness and greeness below-it took my breath away. There is an article in December’s Vanity Fair featuring same said Firefly with Mr. Blackwell posing on that same hill. That is what I would call my dream house. You should check it out sometime.
