Caribbean Sky Scrapers

Ok, here is something interesting that I came across! I wonder if Trinidad and Tobago has surpassed Jamaica on the ‘tallest building’ front! Check out this picture of the Nicholas Building that I found on the site ‘Through the Lens: Trinidad and Tobago‘. Its a nice photo of a very interesting looking building, go check it out. Its got 21 storeys, and it beats out the Twin Towers, one of which is also pictured on that site (dah one deh ugly doah).

I wonder what the tallest building in Jamaica is? I don’t know if we even have one thats got twenty storeys! When I think of Kingston, the tallest building there is probably the Jamaica Hilton or the Pegasus hotels… you know, those buildings are side by side and I don’t even know which of them is taller… the Pegasus probably is. Next time I drive through New Kingston, I’ll check.

Still, I don’t think that either of them has twenty storeys… Looking around the country, I am not sure either, though its a good bet that the tallest buildings in Jamaica are all hotels, with plenty of them being scattered in Montego Bay and in Ocho Rios, but I have no idea which of them is the tallest! Probably they are not as tall as either the T&T Twin Towers or the Nicholas Bldg, however. Also, I can’t think of one thats as interesting looking as the Nicholas Bldg.

Methinks we need to start building a couple of sky scrapers on the waterfront by Kingston Harbour and even in New Kingston. What do you think?

Hey, if you stop by here and you’re from one of the other islands, ie. not Jamaica and not T&T, tell me about the tallest building in your island nuh? Campfyah, Venezuela counts as Caribbean for this one…

Friday thoughts…

Posted in General on April 29th, 2005 by Dr. D

I woke earlier than usual this morning as I retired early last night. Sometimes when the body cries out for rest, we should just listen to it and comply. This morning is overcast and relatively cool. I don’t see any blue sky….my memories of a ‘nice’ London morning are are stirred. The house has a beautiful quiet to it, a fresh morning breeze is coming in through the open window of my study, from where I have a vista of the hills surrounding my area….green again after the welcome showers of rain that fell from the heavens in the last week or two. The life giving water greeted by flora and fauna of all species. I hear the sound of birds chirping, the sound of the occasional mutt barking. I sit back and relax while sipping from the cup of Earl Grey tea, in my usual ‘at home’ garb.

Eventually, I step out on the driveway, to open the padlock which secures the gate….have to protect our few hard earned assests from the hands of the unscrupulous that roam the soil of this land, a breed which seems to be wantonly reproducing. But alas, we cannot allow them to, this is just as much our country as it is theirs…the struggle continues.

I collect the morning paper and my two mutts greet me, their tails wagging back and forth in a frenzy. I glance at the headlines…. “Full board of solid waste agency goes.”…..’Yeah, whatever’, is my thought in response.

I think back on the week coming to a close. It wasn’t a bad one. I look forward to this evening when I drive the trusty Integra out the gates of the hospital and bid it farewell until tomorrow….I am on call Saturday and Sunday. I think of the bredrins I will greet this evening over spirit, pleasantries being shared, fists being knocked, badmouting, one and two expletives, but it is all good.

I thank God for my life, I thank Him for family, friends and my job. I thank Him for another Friday….TGIF my crew. smily The Doctor is out.

Wagging Tongues

So we recently got a foxy, new chica at work. Yeah, I used the term ‘chica’ because she is a latina. She has been the topic of much conversation amongst the men, you can be sure! Of course, guys in offices are notorious for always discussing the new ladies, so you might think that I’m saying the new lady is hot just because she is fresh and new to the scene, right? Not so, mes amis!

Lest you might believe that she was only noticed by the men, here is a bit of a conversation that I overheard between two ladies at the office. Of course, all names have been changed so as to protect the innocent and the guilty parties…

Woman1 :Bwoy, I don’t know how Marissa stays so slim though! Have you seen how she eats! Plenty junk food, and plenty of it!
Woman2 :Stephanie says that she thinks it is just her genes! She has wonderful genes and so she can eat what she wants and still stay thin.
Woman1 : Yeah! Well they must really be some really wonderful genes, bwoy! You know that she has four kids, right?!
Woman2 : Yeah… personally I think that she eats and then goes home and vomits.

Well, I don’t know about you, but I found that funny! Still, you can tell by the gist of the conversation, Marissa is a hottie, nuh true?

In the news..

Posted in General on April 28th, 2005 by Dr. D

I decided to scan the Gleaner today, as I haven’t heard much about what has been happening locally. I come across an article about a protest by some teachers at Immaculate High School. Yes, my sister went there, Mad Bull’s sisters went there, plenty people I know used to attend that school. It was one that did not mess around where the matter of discipline of its students was concerned. Seems that may have changed (like a lot of the other schools here)…..the protest by the teachers surrounds an incident where a student allegedley spat into a teacher’s bottle of water after another student distracted the teacher! The teachers say that suspension is not an adequate punishment…they feel the students concerned should be expelled.

Now, clearly, there has been an across the board reduction in discipline in our society…. in schools, in the way people drive on our roads, or simply in the way people interact with others. Lots of people just come across as classless and lacking in any decency. When you think about this spitting incident, some may feel that expulsion is a harsh punishment. I don’t think so. The students need to be made to realize that what they did is way out of line, a no-nonsense type of attitude has to be taken. If not, they will continue to behave like this and only get worse. Now, I am not saying that when I was in school that we were angels, we weren’t. We did get up to pranks and so on, but spitting??? I doubt it. I came to the realization that I could not teach present day school with these wayward children….we would likley come to some serious blows….cause I doh defend the crap that some of them live by. I wonder how the parents of these children responded on hearing of the incident? What do you all feel should be done with these girls?

I also see that the woman that JDid posted about recently, that was murdered in a shootout in a Toronto nightclub, turns out to have been Jamaican. Yes, our people are found all over.

Finally, on a lighter note, I must try to reach this Kabana restaurant soon, this is the third person who is recommending it highly. That’s it from me for now. Any of you have any news to share…preferably good?? Have a stress free day.

Half day….

Posted in General on April 27th, 2005 by Dr. D

Not chatting much this morning….probably a good ting as I really don’t have any thoughts to share. I leaving out a bit earlier to head for work. Only going ’till half day today. So, if any of you happen to have an appointment with the skin clinic this afternoon, you won’t see me. I going funeral service today at 1. Don’t know if any gathering tekking place after…I guess I will hear. So, without further delay, let me go get ready for my half day at work and hope you all have a good day yourselves. ‘Till next time…..

Pickney in cuffs…..

Posted in General on April 26th, 2005 by Dr. D

Yesterday, I saw an item on CNN Headline News that made me look around the net for some details. Indeed, in St. Petersburg, Florida, a five year old girl was handcuffed by Police because of an ‘outburst’ at school. Apparently her mother is taking legal action against the Police. Here is the story at Yahoo.

Now, I have a few questions…..how can a five year old child be so dysfunctional that it takes cuffs to make her tow the line? Can it be acceptable for a five year old pickney to behave in such a way? Kicking teacher? Tearing papers off the wall? The ‘tantrum’ does seem abnormal to me….and I do not think that is because I have no children…the pickney want some good beating! Give the pickney a good backsiding rather than cuff her….then again….is America, you cyaan beat pickney….right!? The Child Welfare Activists will be on your ass! smily

It will be interesting to see what comes out of this. But, to me, the little girl needs to learn to tow the line, the ‘outburst’ at this age does not sit well for her in the future…how will she conduct herself when she becomes a teenager? The handcuffing seems excessive to me. smily To sum it up….I still feel that raising children the way in which I was…in the Caribbean….does a hell of a lot more for them, rather than the ‘leggo beast’ way that plenty of them in the ‘First World’ growing up today. Any thoughts here?

When I Win De Lotto

Posted in Hopeful on April 26th, 2005 by Mad Bull

I’m going to stop beg, and borrow… and that is a noble goal, nuh true? People, the Lotto in Jamaica is currently at J$100 million. I want some numbers from you. I will use these numbers when I am buying a ticket. Be good and give me 6 numbers between 1 and 36 nuh? If you want, you can give me less numbers too, ok? Then I will combine them with numbers that other people give.

Yeah man, if I win, you will eat a food too! Also I will donate some of my money to the Jamaica AIDS Hospice, and to Air Jamaica, and… and… to your favourite charities. How does that grab you! Anything you want, if you give me the winning numbers… you think I’m lying? Cho, man, doesn’t everybody? Why hold it against me then? Just help a brother out nuh man! If you do, I will give you a big smily

Almost 3 years old….

Posted in General on April 25th, 2005 by Dr. D

….no, I am not referring to the age of the yute me have hiding inna country with him mother! smily Actually, it just dawned on me that come April 30, this blog will be having its Third Birthday! In a way, I guess it is sort of an achievement…..you see, when I got started on this thing (I was coerced by Mad Bull based on the comments I used to leave at his site) the Bull thought that it would have been perhaps a transient thing for me. He didn’t think I would keep it up. Hence the “testblog” in the web address. So, I guess the testblog has stood the test of time. Now, I put it to you who come here to read my fart regularly, that the session in honour of the third year is on all a ONOO! Yeah man, y’allz going to provide the liquor, smily , the food, the sexy body gyals, etc etc etc. Thank you all in advance. At least you have a few days to get the details all planned out and to select appropriate gifts that will be appreciated by I an I! (I’da like hold a RSX still….) smily Those who are having a difficult time selecting a gift, fear not, I do accept cash (preferably in a hard currency….that spells Sterling or Euros in today’s world….not US!) So, we here in blogland have a session to look forward to, and you’re all invited to mek an appearance.

Clearly, you can all see that I’m feeling rather idle at the moment…either that, or me head a tek me! But hey, it is nice to fantasize sometimes, nuh true?

Actually, I just got some nice news from Rufie, my sister. You see, she and her hubby Marc Antony are expecting. Seems like the Ultrasound she had today (she is 31 weeks) shows that I shall be the Uncle of a lovely little girl. Something to look forward to. Actually, I would have preferred that she didn’t tell me the sex, but anyway. It sort of spoils the surprise. Which brings me to a question to get you all interactive. How many of you who have had or are planning to have children want to be told the sex of the child as shown on an ultrasound before birth? Do, you prefer to wait until the delivery to get the surprise? Speaking of which, I know a couple who recently had their first child. They were told it was a girl that they were having. Well, when delivery day came they did get a surprise…..the girl had a penis and a pair of balls! smily They were just as happy, but it goes to show that the ultrasounds are not always foolproof in predicting the child’s gender. Anyway, time to stop typing foolishness. I going go hold a fresh, watch some TV and go bed. Easy.

Good Monday morn..

Posted in General on April 25th, 2005 by Dr. D

Well, hail up. Just in case you happen to be suffering from Monday morning blues, never mind, it will pass. The weekend did pass quickly, but wasn’t bad. Now, I been mentioning that we have been having some welcome showers of rain here. Saturday was no exception. We did get some more in the afternoon. People, I doh know what happened, but Saturday night all I can say is the temperature did DROP! The night was breezy, and I woke up at about 1 AM Sunday morning with my feet feeling cold. Had to go into the closet and take out the blanket. Anyway, it was nice weather. Yesterday was beautiful, sunny but relatively cool. I wonder if more rain will fall today?

What does this week promise? Well, for me, I have a funeral service on Wednesday afternoon…same fellow who hung himself. Starts at 1 PM, so I going haffi get excused from the afternoon clinic at work. Should not be a problem. Apart from that, nothing else outta de ordinary comes to mind. Anyway, even if it is a routine week, hope it ends up bringing you only good fortune. Take care all. (Apologies for the lack of interesting content…..but a so it go sometime!)

Yeah yeah…

Posted in General on April 22nd, 2005 by Dr. D

You all know why I saying yeah, yeah….dats right. It name Friday today. And, it also name payday. So tings looking arite for dis evenin’s wind down and imbibing of spirit. Now, I broke the no carb with dinner thing last night…..it resumes this evening. We had stew peas for dinner, how could a normal Caribbean man refuse some white rice with that eh? So, is the first in over ten days that rice entered this body. Now, couple hours after having dinner, I was chilling and surfing some TV channels before I officially went to bed. A nice rain was falling outside and the place was so cool….well relaxing. I was then reminded of what I had for dinner and its effects on man gas production. Like a drug rep. from T’dad had said one night at our conference in Tobago last November, when he was trying to select from the dishes on display at the buffet dinner that night….”Boy Doc. Every ting dem have for dinner tonite looking very windy indeed eh!” (Almost everything had some peas and beans in it.) Yes iyah, stew peas irie but careful how you mix with ‘polite’ company afterwards.

Blogs been a bit slowish this week…anyway…so it go sometimes. Anything else a gwaan? Well, nutten that I care to mention….the usual shyte in Ja. Hear what, let me not bother to drag out the issue. Have a great Friday and weekend. Bless.
