In the news..

I decided to scan the Gleaner today, as I haven’t heard much about what has been happening locally. I come across an article about a protest by some teachers at Immaculate High School. Yes, my sister went there, Mad Bull’s sisters went there, plenty people I know used to attend that school. It was one that did not mess around where the matter of discipline of its students was concerned. Seems that may have changed (like a lot of the other schools here)…..the protest by the teachers surrounds an incident where a student allegedley spat into a teacher’s bottle of water after another student distracted the teacher! The teachers say that suspension is not an adequate punishment…they feel the students concerned should be expelled.

Now, clearly, there has been an across the board reduction in discipline in our society…. in schools, in the way people drive on our roads, or simply in the way people interact with others. Lots of people just come across as classless and lacking in any decency. When you think about this spitting incident, some may feel that expulsion is a harsh punishment. I don’t think so. The students need to be made to realize that what they did is way out of line, a no-nonsense type of attitude has to be taken. If not, they will continue to behave like this and only get worse. Now, I am not saying that when I was in school that we were angels, we weren’t. We did get up to pranks and so on, but spitting??? I doubt it. I came to the realization that I could not teach present day school with these wayward children….we would likley come to some serious blows….cause I doh defend the crap that some of them live by. I wonder how the parents of these children responded on hearing of the incident? What do you all feel should be done with these girls?

I also see that the woman that JDid posted about recently, that was murdered in a shootout in a Toronto nightclub, turns out to have been Jamaican. Yes, our people are found all over.

Finally, on a lighter note, I must try to reach this Kabana restaurant soon, this is the third person who is recommending it highly. That’s it from me for now. Any of you have any news to share…preferably good?? Have a stress free day.

Hey Doc, I think the children should be expelled. Because of other implications I cannot expound on my statement. A stand needs to be taken against the indiscipline plaguing our school system.

Hi Dr. D. Like Scratchie, I agree that they should be expelled. Downright nassy and disgusting behavior. When I hear things like this occuring I have to wonder, aren’t these children being taught values? What’s going on here???? Too much negativity going on. Have a great day.

Yep Dr. D. what a situation. I don’t know what is going on with these youngsters. Right now we are considering preventing the student nurses from attending the clinic, due to their poor behaviour and abuse of the system. This generation maybe lost.. p.s. Please tell your staff on the Penthouse Ward, not to encourage the staff members. For this week alone i have had 18 people coming DEMANDING refferals to skin clinic. I ran all but 2 of them.

I believe in second chances so I’d be reluctant to expel them although what they did was disgraceful. My students worry me a lot as well as they seem to have no sense of responsibility, values or respect for authority. It is a huge societal problem that seems to be getting worse.

I think expulusion is appropriate. The article does not mention if this is the first “incident” for this girl. I would bet it is not. Sounds like a spoiled little brat. Considering what can be transmitted through saliva, I say it is a pretty serious offense.

Here is a a letter to the Editor about the same incident. I support the author’s views.
