An issue of colour….

What a day I have had….work and more work. In addition, the heat drained my energy and had me wiping sweat from my brow while examining patients. Anyhow, I did what had to be done.

I was doing a bit of blog surfing and read Campfyah’s latest post. I might have gone a bit overboard in my comment there, but like her site is titled…”It’s all Good.” She cited two examples of what I referred to as racial stereotyping. After typing my lengthy comment, I mentioned that I might post something of a similar nature. Hear what, I tiyad. So, I went into my archives, and found a post from what I might refer to as ‘better blogging days’. Here it is. Give it a read. Finally, someone visited the site and wanted to know what the author looked like…sent me an e-mail. So, here is Dr. D. Comments on the old post and the pic, if you wish, are welcome. Peace.

Waah, de man a chat two times today? Wow!

On this issue, Aruba seems to me to have a drastic case of colorism. All the professionals I see coming before the cameras to speak regarding the missing American girl are white or very fair. But the most gruesome example was the police jailing those two obviously innocent Black guys and letting the ones (one white and two Indians) who were at least more worthy of further questioning go. Arresting those three after so many days made it possible for evidence to be destroyed, etc. Now the govt. looks like a bunch of idiots running around like a chicken without a head!

Pauline, I spent four days in Aruba in 2003 at a conference. Maybe not enough time to make reasonable judgement, but I can’t say that I found lighter skins to seem at an advantage. Then again, I could be wrong. With respect to the missing girl, I think CNN has just given it too much coverage. But, they are the ones who determine what is news.

CNN’s coverage of the Aruba “kidnapping” and the “lost” boy scout has made me less sympathetic to these people. I am sick of the coverage and am at the point where I really don’t give a damn. Speaking of race, do you ever notice that CNN does not show any missing “black” kids or adults?
  5. Dr. D. Says:
    Indeed Trish!

    yup yup…too much coverage.

Hi dr. D. Read your blogg from Aug 2002 on color prejudice. Well, when I witness anyone like that patient carrying on like that there is more to it than just wanting this and that and someone else more experienced etc. This woman is crying out for attention….attention that she isn’t getting from home. What she needs is a stiff one-not to be indelicate. Also, I’ve heard and heard stories about Jamaicans living up here, women in particular cause it was two women having this conversation in a most affected “‘hinglish accent’ bout when I’m home my maid does this and my maid does that and I don’t have to do this nor that in their speaky spokey ‘haccent. My girlfriend who is a physical therapist was treating one of ladies and told the ladies that she’s proud and grateful to be living in the USA and if things are so wonderful back home then go back home and live. UGH. You know the sort I’m talking about. Affected bunch of hypodrits giving the rest of us Jamaicans who are grateful to be here living in one of the the best countries in the world. I doan care how much criticism US gets-they’re the most giving country and compassionate country there is. Nuff said.

Not sure about Sunshines statement about the USA being the most giving and compassionate country…The American policies don’t tend to reflect that, especially with regards to poorer countries, the trade agreements are a prime example… As poor as my fellow Jcans are, I feel I would quicker get a glass of water from a Jcan than an American…from my experience these people don’t give away prayers…Much of their “charitable” donations are tax deductions…Can’t say much on the US govt because I have never asked or recieved anything from them… The wealth of American is built by foriegners and yet we are the least liked…the hospitals in Florida are filled with Carribbean staff…if anything we foriegner have given too much to this country and neglected our own…

Hi Trish-I agree with what you’re saying. I have lots of J’can friends working in South Florida hospitals. The have an excellent reputation here. My comment aobut US being a generous country was an general commnet regarding the global situation, as in situations such as relief. No matter howmuch we contribute the US is criticized. Don’t get me wrong, the US isn’t perfect. But that’s another topic.

Agree with Trish! What started here as a post about skin colour issues has ended up in discussions about the US and its stance wrt charity…I love when discussions on a blog go this way. Add more if y’all wish nuh!
