‘Country’
Well, I didn’t get the opportunity to do a post eariler today. So, having had a bowl of gungo (pigeon) peas soup (with pigs tail and beef inna it of course) for lunch, I feeling bloggish now. Also feeling a bit sleepy as well…but you know how dat go. A glass of cool coconut water (fresh of course) is washing down lunch.
Not really having much to chat about I surfed the Gleaner on line and came across an article about Balaclava which I found a refreshing read while having the soup. Now, though I am a true Jamaican, I do not proclaim to know every nook and cranny of my country. Trus me, a nuff place in Jamrock that I cannot say that I know. Well, Balaclava is one of them. All I know is that when we were doing Internship…..when joking around, a certain Senior Medical officer used to threaten some junior medical staff who were not pulling their weight by telling them that if they do not pull up their socks, they may get sent to work in a Clinic in Balaclava! The idea there was that the place is supposed to be so rural and lacking in support services and basic medical supplies, that working there would be akin to punishment….. anyway. Far as I am aware, nobody from my medical class served that sentence.
Doh get the feeling that I dissing ‘country’ still. Much as I am an urban/suburban dweller….country does have nuff pluses. Major one….low stress levels. You have good clean ‘earthy’ air to breathe….depending on where you living in country as well….the air may not be so earthy at all….but might well smell like cow, goat or fowl shyte! Crime levels, low or almost non-existent. River bath sans clothes…..yeah man…dat wikid…… specially if female company on de scene….. Country rum bar does have its vibes as well. You ever tek een some o dem country man a drink lika and play dominoes pon Saturday and Sunday. Rass….when dem concentrating on dem game and ‘reading’ (suppem I doh undastan)…is like de rest o de world tune out. Always hear Daddy and some him bredrin dem referring to ‘Miss Joyce’ bar…..I don’t know this place nearly as well as my old man does. The name ‘Miss Joyce’ is really just a filler…but like most Caribbean islands….one thing we don’t lack in ths country is bars….I would say we have many hundreds of watering holes in Jamrock.
In reading the article, I like the part where they said that them only call Police inna Balaclava if somebody cuss bud wud. Bumbocleat….man like miself and Mad Bull couldn’t live deh. Dem would be calling Babylon pon us all de time. Hear me and mi crew while we imbibimg juice and dem would probably waan lock us up inna one of Her Majesty’s Grilled Hotels!
Anyway, I guess why I find this article appealing is probably because I need to mek a run outta City Kingston mislef. And, a Portland run (just the thought of it is relaxing) is on the agenda for Sunday. Actually, I planning to borrow Daddy vehicle…the poor Integra front end not going to do well on the Junction Road after the heap o rain we had in the last few months. So, the Hilux Surf…being a 4 WD will probably be de lick fah dat. A must stop on the way is for some Blueberry Hill Jerk Pork and a well cold Red Stripe….just outside Buff Bay. Look on the vista from the cliff above the azure Caribbean Sea and enjoy likkle breeze, and man ready fe de rest of the drive to Port Antonio….where more pork, lika and bredrins will abound. Who knows….we might even meet two phat country ‘mullett!’
Fret not, the camera will travel, and if anything picture worthy…it a go snap.
Well, as much as I getting the country vibe, there is work to be done inna town, so….until TGIF time tomorrow…I guess I will continue to get into the mood for a country drive Sunday. Peace out.
