First for the month…
So, April deh pon we eeh!? I guess that is more of a statement than a question…tek it any way you wish….right now I nuh too fussy. And indeed, this will make my first post for the month. So, maybe you think I have lots to report. Well, mek see how it go nuh.
Track back to the weekend jus gone. Well, actually, I was on duty Saturday and Sunday…but it wasn’t bad at all. I did manage to get in some well needed rest. Despite that, when I woke up this morning, I coulda well did stay inna de bed for another hour…but that was not to be.
Driving home in the afternoon hours….’bout 2:30ish on Saturday after doing a quick run through the supermarket…..(never needed much…spent just about $2,500…..Ja$ of course) I buck up one rass of a traffic jam pon Long Lane. Took me over thirty minutes to get home from Manor Park, which is usually a five minute drive or so. So, I had surmised that there must have been some major accident on the road. Not quite. Eventually, me see nuff smoke…..rahtid…I wonder if people block road and a bun tyre (one of the favoured methods of protest by some of the people in this country). No, it was not that thankfully. So, what the hell was causing this heap o smoke and ting? Nuh one bush fire…….yes, the hill on the left side of Long Lane….quite near to the location of a new set of apartments that are under construction was very much in flames and the firemen were bringing it under control. Because the fire truck had to be parked on the road, it was causing a buildup of traffic…..plus people had to be slowing down to faas (look) at what was happening. Anyway, by the time I had passed, it was more or less smouldering and things seemed to be under control.
These bush fires have been happening quite regularly as we are in the middle of a parch dry spell here in Kingston. So, almost daily, the bush on Jack’s Hill is catching ablaze. As there are no hydrants near there, our Soljah Boyz from the JDF use helicopters to transport water from the Mona dam and they drop it on the fire from these containers that hang from the belly of the ‘copter. So, eventually, the inferno on Long Lane was put out.
Yesterday afternoon, I was actually reading a post by mi bredrin Mad Bull and as I was going let off a likkle comment pon him….poof…I start to hear the UPS that I bought in January mek the beeping sound. Power cut to rahtid. So, even though I had power to run the computer for another twenty or thirty minutes, I decided to lock down this machine, cussing two claat out loud. I suppose I can blurdcleat comment later. Anyway, I decided to go hol a lay down to pass the time ’till the power returns. One hour later, after ketching likkle snooze, me wake up…still no light. So, I call JPS. The girl who answered (quite pleasant I might add) told me that they know of the outage and it is being worked on by the crew. So, I ask what caused it. ‘Is the bush fire that they had yesterday up that side. It apparently damaged some of the wires.’
Well, look like seh de damage did major, cause is 9 PM last night dat we did come outta de dark ages. Anyway, I am not complaining. When you cyaan do better…you jus haffi hol tite till you get a ease….nuh true?
Today, at lunchtime, I am heading to the vehicle as I have a bit of banking to do. As I approach the car I see that the right back tyre looks very low on air.
More bad wud cuss….mussi pick up some nail or other. Anyway, it had enough air to tek me to the gas station where I left it and did the banking while the tyre man did what had to be done. To my surprise, by the time I walked back from the bank…all was well. I see the yute tightening the lugs. He confirms that I did pick up a nail. So, all was well for $300. Gave him a $100 tip in addition…him can hold a Red Stripe wid it. Guess in summary, what I can say is that despite the trials and tribulations that we encounter in life, in many cases, we can solve them. Do what has to be done, and put your trust in The Almighty.
That’s it from me for now. Pretty mundane eeh….wah fe do? Lef a comment if you feel like, I will be happy to hear from any of you, my peeps.
April 3rd, 2006 at 5:50 pm Pretty much the same with bushfires here.No matter ho wmuch people are advised not to light them it falls on deaf ears
April 3rd, 2006 at 7:09 pm So Kami, you think its people lighting them or wah? I was wondering if some of them don’t just start spontaneously, because I can’t believe that so many people so mad!
Yeah, Doc, it wasn’t your most exciting, but we glad to hear from you. Feel no way, no one can be at the top of their game 24-7. Plus, it wasn’t all that boring either…
April 4th, 2006 at 8:36 am I tend to agree with the Bull….my impression is that some arise from people burning trash…but others my arise spontaneously as a result of the dryness of the place and daytime heating. We need some good rain.
April 4th, 2006 at 10:35 am Rain would be nice - I was also one of those people who lost light because of the bush fire. But we did have water in the taps at that time - suppose we can’t expect both water and electricity at the same time!
April 4th, 2006 at 12:13 pm Thanks. Seems that the residents living in the hills need to drive around with a bucket of water in the back of them car, and just throw at the bushes at random in passing. That may actively prevent the fires, says Smokey.
April 4th, 2006 at 2:48 pm Bushfires mekking dem way hey too.. De Avila Mountain range dry tuh rathid and ah ketch fire. This weekend went on a road trip and all along de way, yuh see fire buring in de mountains and longside de road. of course some wid de help ah flicing ciggrets. April 4th, 2006 at 9:42 pm Yeah,in many instances people start them here. They get some kinda kick from it but some happen naturally
April 5th, 2006 at 11:27 pm sounds like serious bush fires for real.
April 6th, 2006 at 10:07 am Ah yes, I remember now, from Manor Park, up Long Lane. That never used to be a ‘dry’ place. I hope Jamaica gets some showers soon, I don’t like the bush fire idea at all.
