Here Labouring….

Well, y’all are probably wondering wtr (what the rass… my Jamaican equivalent of wtf) I am up at this hour blogging for on a Public holiday, namely Labour Day. Well, essentially, I am here ending a night of call which will expire at 8 AM today…..it is now after 5 AM. That means that I am not on duty today for the holiday.

Last night, I got home at about eight. Did an evening check with the ward patients to ensure that all was well and collected a few lab results. Drove home in what seemed to be a bit more than usual traffic on the roads…probably because today is a holiday. Assisted with a matter for someone that I know by making a few telephone calls and then got settled in front of dinner….some beef balls and nuff vegetable, calaloo and raw veggies……remember…no carbs with the night meal….belly looking reasonable btw. So, having enjoyed my dinner and let off some natural gases, I log on here to see if anybody decided to comment on my last post…..yeah, there were a few…..thanks to those of you who bothered. Went to start reading some of my regulars when the cell rings……it is the hospital. smily Dem have a likkle pickney they would like me to see. Their diagnosis is Varicella….(Chicken Pox.) Instantly, my dermatologic mind trips in. The history is too long for Chicken Pox. If the blisters started a week ago, he should not still be developing new ones a week later, they should be starting to resolve now…. (natural history of the pox is about a 7-10 day illness)…..so even before seeing him, that diagnosis is in doubt. (I guess that is why there are dermatologists.)

So, I get into the Integra and head back out to see this blistered yute. Turns out that I am entertaining a diagnosis of Erythema multiforme or perhaps Linear IgA Bullous Dermatosis of Childhood. (For those who may be saying wtr again, never mind….a Google search may help to get you outta de dark, as I am not going to expound any further.)

So, I admitted the poor fella doing most of the necessary. But, he was so miserable last night I decided to spare him, his mother, (and myself), the trauma of the skin biopsy last night. (I hate de hold down bizniz with children, another reason why I decided against Paediatrics.) So, I am going to go up to the ward early this morning, slap a little EMLA cream (a topical anaesthetic cream) on a good blister and proceed with the few other investigations I need to do to complete his admission.

So, now I am having my cuppa Earl Grey and when I get back which should be erly, I will place Sir Ham inna de oven. I just looked at it and it seems it may be suffering from a bit of freezer burn, but we will see how it turns out, as it has been thawing overnight in the kitchen sink. Other than that, I plan to do a bit of fish tank maintenance and chill out with some peeps in the evening. Will let you know if the ham can eat. Enjoy the Labour Day holiday, even if your project for the day involves using pointed tools to get horizontal with a bed partner! smily To those of you who are not on holiday today and have to go to work…..well, I guess your labour is already set out for you. Tek it easy nuh.

The ham is in the garbage dumpster at the gate. When I was half way through baking it, and trying to take off the skin, it never looked the pink colour at all….more like a dull greyish pink. And, the goodly hickory smell was lacking. So, after that I decided that it was a bit off, been in the freezer too long….so out with it. Naw tek nuh chance wid pork.
