SSSS….snake…

I tell you…the weekend just gone was busy…with work. Invariably, whenever staffing is short, we get more work. This has resulted in me just being tiyad to rahtid. I was so happy when 8 AM arrived on Monday…meant my name was off the rota. So, I had a relaxed evening yesterday…went walking and buss some sweat. Came here in the night for a while, but lacked impetus to post anything on the blog, so I made a few comments, logged off and watched some TV.

I saw scanning through this morning’s Gleaner that the Canadian experts that our Prime Minister had wanted to probe the recent power outage that plunged the island into the dark ages have concurred with the findings of the JPS…..they agree that it was caused by lightening. OK, so, is she now satisfied with the explanation, simply since ‘foreign’ experts have said is so it go? You see, this is one of the things about Jamaica that can piss me off….this dependence on foreign and all things that come from there. We have a country where people are qualified in all sorts of professions, but still we tend to big up anything imported and not infrequently downplay our own. I won’t bodda mention the kinda inflated salaries and heap o incentives offfered to these imports. More public funds flushed down the toilet like crap. Anyway, let us hope some light has been shed on what truly caused the darkness so that some sort of corrective measures can be implemented to ensure that the likelihood of this happening again is small, if not non-existent. Am I being a bit too expectant here?

Changing gears somewhat. Last week, one night I was watching some National Geographic Channel….now, I am sure that those of you who read here long enough know that me and anything serpentine….that being snake, doh ‘gree. In fact, I will go as far as to say that I would almost qualify as having a phobia for snakes. My initial response to those creatures is to chop up dem rass wid cutlass….’cause as far as I am concrened, dem nuh serve nuh good purpose here on earth…eradicate dem all. They have represented evil since Biblical days. Anyway, you get the idea…me and dem nuh tek tea.

Well, guess what? Apparently, it has become quite popular for some Americans to be importing Burmese Pythons into the US as PETS! Now, these mofos get so some rass sizes….all fourteen foot! smily They are non-venomous..fine. BUT, they strangle their prey and then swallow them whole, and have very sharp teeth. Evidently, the critters have been released into the wild by some of their owners when they get over sized, or some simply escape, and they apparently have been having some sort of breed-a-thon in the Everglades. These monsters have even been starting to feast on the animal that everyine used to big up as King of the Everglades…the crocodile!

As if that wasn’t enough, folks also seem to think that Nile Monitor Lizards are cute as well….(ask me how so?)… and have been keeping those as pets. When they start to get oversized and want plenty flesh to eat, they too are starting to run wild and breed up in the ‘Glades. Well, these monsters look like mini relics from prehistoric dinosaur times…and you know who would not be setting foot near the waters of the Everglades….seems they have real problem developing on their hands there. My suggestion would be that the government there ban the importation of these reptilian creatures…mek dem stay weh dem deh. Thank God, least here in Ja. we not too badly off in the serpent department.

Anyway, enough of me and my dislike of snakes…..it is time to get ready for work. BTW, planning for the Baptism/Birthday bashment on Sept. 9 is coming along well. ‘Till next time.

So I guess you won’t be going to see Snakes on a Plane?

I didn’t do any research, but I am pretty sure there is some law against importing those lizards & snakes. I think the fact that these people are just letting those reptiles free without trying to sell them is evidence of that. I too was going to ask if you were going to see “Snakes on a Plane.” I know that I won’t, not crazy about snakes myself.

Hate those things…..*shudder*. If I’m not mistaken I think it is illegal. That’s why they probably just let them go at will.

cant deal with snakes either hear you loud and clear about the disrespect shown to the local profesional. same thing happen in barbados too. everything name foreign must be better they claim

I thought he saw “Snakes on a Plane” too. Local folk tend to engage in “bandoloo,” so they are sometimes untrustworthy. Plus it never hurts to have a second opinion.

I can’t see why the hell anyone would want to have a creepy, cold blooded reptile as a pet! That’s why when the so called “exotic pets turn round and kill them I feel no pitty for the buggers!

I dont like snakes either. We get some small grass snakes running around our yard sometimes, but I dont kill them, I usually run them into the bush. Some people do chop them up though.

I think some snakes are pretty, but still I not so sure I would keep them as a pet… Hope the bashment comes off well!

Not too long ago I saw a pic of a python with a 1/2 swallowed gator. The gators are however still the king of the Everglades, 9 times out of 10 the snake will be gator food and not the other way around. That said, all these foriegn importants are seriously messing up the ecosystem of the Glades.
  13. Dr. D. Says:
Shotta M, that clip of the half eaten gator in the python was what they were featuring on the same Nat. Geo. show. It seems the gator was so large that it might simply have caused the python’s stomach to buss open, though its massive jaws expanded to accomodate it!

Listen folks, the little power cut you had in JA a nuh nutten compared to what happened in the boro of Queens in NY this summer. Some folks were w/o electricity for nine days!!! This being the hottest summer in decades made it even worse. And, of course, the power company did not tell the truth initially about the number of households that were without power. It’s the same thing all over, these companies don’t spend the money to maintain their equipment even though they’re digging out the customers’ eyeball. This had to be one of the worst summers weatherwise in NYC. So far the medical examiner reports a total of 37 people died from heatstroke!!

I don’t mind snakes at all but I don’t think that exotics should ever be pets. I thought there was some kind of law out there too but I guess creating laws and actually enforcing them are two different beasts. When I was a kid you could still get monkeys as pets. We had a spider monkey and a squirrel monkey. They were totally cool but again, they belong in their natural environment.
