There is also another expression about birds of a feather flocking together. Specific to your examples, those of low moral standard, the kind that are prone to such criminal activities, generally associate with people of similar ilk. Such "friends" are likely to be of equally low moral standards and prone to turning on a friend. Even/especially after participating in the illicit activity themselves. That reminds me of another expression; There is no honor among thieves.
