Well, The World Cup is iff to a good start and it is bringing plenty of color to the lives of the viewers, nuh true?
Bwoy, T&T really did well to hold Sweden to a nil all draw, though at least one Trini I know of is complaining! Taran’s idea is that the yellow cards attained and the injuries received in the match between T&T and Sweden will hurt T&T’s chance of progressing further in the competition and so there is little reason to celebrate.
My own opinion is that there was very, very little chance of T&T progressing further in the competition anyway. I am not trying to belittle T&T in any way, but I don’t think they have quite attained the lofty regions inhabited by teams such as England, Portugal and even Sweden, so to hope for a performance good enough to merit making the second round against all three of these teams is unrealistic. If you accept this premise, then another goal which one may hold as being worthy is to try not to be absolutely routed by these teams. So far, T&T succeeded in this with Sweden. I think they did well. Lets hope they can do so against Paraguay and England.
While some may feel that they might even have been able to score a goal and steal the game from Sweden if they had thrown in a couple more forwards, I think that this would have weakened their defence more and then Sweden would have more than likely slotted home several goals. Of course, what the hell do I know, right?
To me, the matches on the opening day were more exciting, and the match of the day yesterday was really the Argentina - Ivory Coast match! Ivory Coast look to be quite a team, and I switched over my allegiance from Argentina to them. Now they look to have had the ability to overthrow the favourites. They didn’t, but you could argue that this was more a matter of hard luck than because they simply were unable to do so. I would like to see this team go through until the very end! Could Ivory Coast be the first African nation to all the way to the semi-finals? (Correct me if I am wrong, but I think that previously, the highest any African nation has gone is to the quarter finals. Of course, World Cup history is not necessarily my forte…)
The Ivory Coast has a team which is chock full of talent and they play with skill and assurance. The only thing I would fault their players for is their choice of hairstyles! What is with all this creamed-hair business? Dem doh know say “Bad man nuh dress like girl!”.
By the way, England did very well to hold off Paraguay for the 1-nil victory, IMHO, especially as they were playing one man short.
“What?”, I can hear you sdaying. “I don’t remember England having a player sent off!”. You are right, they didn’t. By my statement above, I meant to suggest that the referee was so biased in his calls that he was really like a twelvth Paraguayan player to rass! He was especially harsh on Peter Crouch. Everytime he touched the ball, the ref. blew for an imaginary infringement!
Actually, even though he looks like he would be bumbling and clumsy, I think Peter Crouch is quite a talent. He can certainly work the football! I like him. I hope he sinks some balls into the back of the net in England’s next game though.
