Renato - To Protect and Serve

Over the Christmas when I was back in Jamaica, I heard that Reneto DeCordova Valentino Adams * had cut a tune and I even heard a snippet or two of it on the radio, but can you believe that today is the first time that I have heard all of the song?!

The bredrin that runs Afflicted Yard was facilitative enough to post up a RealPlayer formatted version of Renato's song "To Protect and Serve". Since I haven't heard it, chances are that some of you haven't either and so I link you to it. Go check it out if you want to. Poor Mountain View, Renato prescribes a continuous curfew for it. Any nice and decent people living there had better move out now before their rights are abrogated. smily

Then again, do you think that any nice and decent people still live down in Mountain View? That is an interesting question indeed. Yes, Mountain View does need a lot of attention and close marking by the security forces, but Renato is very strong medicine indeed. Its so hard to know what to do in Jamaica.... smily

Such a pretty place, but so many problems ...

Tough situation.Mountain View,I assume is one of the violent areas, right?

I would be willing to put my head on the block and say that there MUST be decent people living in Mountain View still. In the same way that there MUST be decent people living in Spanish Town as well. But, perhaps because of socio-economic constraints, they are unable to move to communities that are less 'inflammatory' and simply hope for the best...or maybe leave temporarily and go 'kotch' with relatives when effries start gwaan, in an attempt to try to preserve their own personal safety and that that of their families. I empathsize with anyone who falls into such a situation.

Was just yesterday that I made a similar comment to the bredrin who followed me on the drive to Portland about our country......beautiful place, but the scoprion dem infest it rass now sadly! Perhaps I might do a post.....

Mad Bull, I cant believe you even asked that question. What do you mean, by "Then again, do you think that any nice and decent people still live down in Mountain View?"
Did you unwittingly word that question or did you intentionally mean to reek of disdain while othering the poor hard working people from communities in and around Mountain View?
Come clean please because I'm quite confused and to be honest somewhat dismayed at the possibility (reality?) of Jamaicans still thinking this way about other Jamaicans.

Bart, it was a tongue-in-cheek question, really put there to suggest how wicked & dangerous Mountain View is rather than to suggest that every single person living there is bad. It turns out to be a question that makes one stop to think, if you will...

Consider this:
if I am a person who considers myself to be "nice and decent" and I happen to live in Mountain View, I would have to leave there as soon as I found it possible to do so, because that is not the sort of place that you can live in and continue to be the fullness of "nice and decent", IMHO.

You have to compromise your principles just to live! You have to hear and deaf and you have to see and blind, if you know what I mean, and being "nice and decent" does presume reporting information you may have on perpetrators of foul play, trying to assist those that are being wronged, yadda yadda yadda. Its just a part of being a good citizen, you done know!

Of course I do understand that being a good citizen in such a place would be inimical to one's health, thats why you have to leave to fully adhere to your principles. I believe that over time, plenty 'nice and decent' who could would pack up and leave because they wouldn't like living in such an environment.

If you can't leave, I don't wrong you for adopting a self preservation strategy still... With all that being said, I completely agree with Doc's point above. I do believe that there are some with no option for exit. I am really sorry for those who are nice and decent people living in those communities who can't move out though... Life mussi well rough fi dem, bwoy!

come now Mr. Mad....(say that like wilmot perkins)...I believe that most of the people who live in those communities are decent. They just have to live there, you know how much it cost to live in "decent" neighbourhoods. There is a place that my parents used to live and there are people still living there from that time until now.

Im confused. You've effectively countered or added further ambiguity to all of your own arguments.

"Bart, it was a tongue-in-cheek question"
How could it in all honesty be interpreted as tongue-in-cheek if after saying "Any nice and decent people living there had better move out now before their rights are abrogated" your follow statement begun with "then again...?"

++++++

"... sort of place that you can live in and continue to be the fullness of "nice and decent"
You do realise that you have dropped your foot in your mouth here again right? If someone cant be "nice and decent" in these area's then you are essentially relegating them to some lesser status than 'nice and decent'

btw, what the hell is nice and decent anyway?

++++

"...being "nice and decent" does presume reporting information you may have on perpetrators of foul play, trying to assist those that are being wronged, yadda yadda yadda"

after which you follow up with "Of course I do understand that being a good citizen in such a place would be inimical to one's health, thats why you have to leave to fully adhere to your principles"

All this while admitting that
"If you can't leave, I don't wrong you for adopting a self preservation strategy still" and "I do believe that there are some with no option for exit"

MB, how many people do you know who live in Mountain view? Better yet, where in JA are you from and where did you grow up? Two serious questions btw.

It is not my intent to pick every little fine point apart or to chastise you for your point of view but to be honest, your original post and the subsequent defense did have a tinge of bigotry IMHO.

Jah Guide,
Im out

Yo, Bart... hold up, my brother... consider your blood pressure... take it easy.

First, whats this "defense" business? I never know say war declare and shot a lick!

And no, I don't think I put my foot in my mouth at all, but maybe I just can't see it. Hey, if you say I am a bigot, then I probably am 'tinged' with it somewhat.

Updated: You know, I was watching a DVD when someone called me to tell me about your comment, Bart. Natty insisted on pausing the movie so that she could read it, and I decided to read it as well and then I decided to respond respond then and there, but I rushed off a little thing and it had in an error. Guess what happened after that? The movie nuh stick in the DVD Player! We can't get it to continue, so here I am again. I therefore took the opportunity to correct this comment slightly.

At the same time, for better or for worse, I decided to continue a bit.

Bart, I know for a fact that there are good people down there, just as I know that there are plenty bad people down there.

I remember once I was travelling in a vehicle which shut off down in that area. A man who I believe lived in the area tied a rope unto our bumper and towed us the hell out of there because he felt that it wasn't safe for us to stay there. We didn't ask for his help and he didn't really offer it. He more insisted on helping us. He just came over and said "Oonoo cyan stay dung yahso. Me ago tow oonoo out of the area". He discussed where he would tow us to with the driver and another occupant of the vehicle, then he tied on his rope and towed us there and that was that!

As I remember it, he didn't ask for any money either, though like Doctor D, I sometimes suffer from C.R.A.F.T. so I may be wrong.

Money or not though, he really helped us out. We were scared shitless!

In short, Brother Bart, I am saying here that I know that there are some good people down there... sometimes I do wonder if the good guys aren't greatly outnumbered in that area though... Therein lies the ambiguity / bigotry, I suspect.

Sorry if what I said hurt your feelings, Bart. I suspect you may be from Mountain View, or an area with a similarly bad rep., based on the way you kick up and gwaan bad... sorry boss, doh take it personal, seen?

BTW, I hope you don't read this little story and assume that I am suggesting that is only one deggeh deggeh 'nice and decent' person live in the Mountain View area!
