Chinese Stylee
Yesterday afternoon Natty and I took MB. Jr. to the birthday party of a little girl who possibly is the hottest two year old in the complex… She is so pretty!
It was a nice little party. The girls father is a black belt in Kung Fu, and has his own school. He is really into all manner of things Chinese, and they said that its customary for Chinese people to have a “Lion Dance” at events of this nature, to bless the event, the people attending and of course, the birthday girl. This “Lion Dance” involves people getting into a costume. There is a huge lion’s head (which looked a lot like the head of the dragon costume used for the Dragon dances at Chinese New Year functions) and some furry looking cloth that covers the person behind the “head carrier”. While the performers were suiting up, Mb. Jr. left us and went over to a table which had Cheese Trix and other junk food like that on it. He really loves Cheese Trix. He turned around to see the lion dancing, and he was watching that quite calmly and interestedly, until suddenly they charged him! Now this is just a part of the dance, but he was terrified. He screamed and ran around the tables in his path and virtually FLEW back to his mother’s side for protection. I couldn’t help it, I nearly died laughing, I know it was wrong, but he looked so funny… Natty had to take him around to the front of the complex until the dancers took off their outfit.
Who really impressed me was the little kid next door. When the “Lion” charged him, he stood his ground and stared it in the face impassively. Virtually fearless, that boy, and he’s only three. Awesome, I tell you!
Several of the other kids were reduced to tears as well, and others ran away too. Anyway, when MB. Jr. came back the little kid next door carried him to show him the “Lion’s Head”, to prove that it wasn’t real, and he even got him to pat it, so that was good. Maybe he won’t be afraid when next he sees one…
By the way, I wrote another essay, this one is about the Breadfruit Tree. Check it out, nuh? Oh, and I set up a weblog for my friend, Dr. D. Its design is very basic, but as soon as I’m sure he plans to keep up the blogging, I’ll help him with a site redesign. Check out “The Doctor is in”. Be sure to leave him some comments on what you think of his baby…
MB, you have outdone yourself on the breadfruit tree essay. Good stuff. Can’t agree with you on the boiling of breadfruit though, I think it is much better fried or roasted. Better still, have you ever had a breadfruit salad? It’s quite delicious. I am also reliably informed that there is a breadfruit drink, I have never had it though and can’t imagine what it should taste like. On the issue of Chinese Stylee, I guess your reaction to MB Jr.’s initial fear of the lion was that of just a regular Dad!
MB, you’re too fickle! How can you say that you dislike liver and bananas and have the gall to say that you like boiled breadfruit - that is just yucky! As for Dr. D and his great ideas of breadfruit salad and drink - what the hell? What is it with you bloggers today? No man - better you go back to the peppery pork story - that was a good way to make us salivate! Nice one about MB Jr and the Lion’s head though; it would’ve been even nicer if maybe you hadn’t laughed in his face - you are mean! But far be it from me to give parenting tips all the same
Chat more later guys.
I remember when my kids were young like that. I guess that I’ll have to wait for grandchildren to go through it again, but I hope not too soon.
