Unruliness and Stone Throwing? MoBay, Man!

I started dating Natty back in 1983, in December. This was in the height of the schoolboy football season. As a matter of fact, a short time into the relationship, we made the journey to Montego Bay to watch the Montego Bay leg of the Olivier Shield match between St. Georges College (St. G. C.) and Cornwall College. It was a good match. I don’t remember the outcome now. I believe that St. G. C. won that match one-nil, even though Cornwall won the Shield that year. While I am not one hundred percent certain of the outcome, I definitely remember Buddyhead (the celebrated St. G. C. striker) blasting a ball into the back of the net. The ball hit the second crossbar, the one inside the goal, and bounced back out of the goal. As a result, many Cornwall fans believed that Buddyhead had not scored. They thought he had hit the front crossbar. I remember watching the referee blow his whistle and point to the center spot. The two teams complied and were setting up to restart the match when it happened. The Cornwall fans started throwing stones unto the pitch. The players and the officials had to run from the field for awhile. Calm was restored shortly, and the match was resumed.

Since then, I have read in the papers over and over of sporting events in Montego Bay (MoBay) being halted for stone throwing or other ruffian-like behavior. This occurs for football, or cricket. When the team from the West loses, prepare for bad behavior.

This morning, I glanced through the Gleaner online and noticed a headline “Stone throwing causes premature end to match”. Immediately, I bet myself that this story would be about some team or match in the Montego Bay area. Sho’ nuff! I’m not even sure that the teams are from MoBay, but if the match is broken up by stone throwing, its likely that the match was played in Montego Bay.

I think that this is a disgusting indictment on the unrulinss of the sports fans in that area. The Jamaica Football Federation and ISSA (the Body managing Secondary School Sports) ought to begin to plan to curb this level of indicipline in football, and the Cricket Board should too. Something has to be done. Yes, some measure of indicipline has already spread right across the country, but the number of incidents seems to be highest in MoBay, as far as I can recall. Feel free to correct me if I am wrong, (But give proof if possible nuh?) as I don’t want to slight MoBay unfairly. The only problem is, I am not sure just what action they should take. Anybody else got any ideas?

By the way, as a service to any Georgians, or indeed, anyone interested in whats going on in schoolboy football in Jamaica (Ja.), heres the link to see the results : Click here. Notice that St. G.C. is doing well, running second in Group B. Give me an ‘S’. Gimme a ‘T’. Gimme a ‘G’. Gimme a ‘C’S-T-G-C! S-T-G-C! S-T-G-C! You can do it, baby!

  1. GEDDOVER IT!!! ( the stgc stuff)

  2. Natty, guweh! Mad Bull, unfortunately, this level of indiscipline (sp.), is simply a reflection of the level of decay that has occurred in our youth over the past say 20 years that I aluded to in a recent post of mine. Badmanship, hooliganism, lack of manners, disrespect for authority etc. is the order of the day here. Make it a crime and lock up dem rass. Trust me, the only thing some of these roaches understand is jail and gunshot, and even that I do not feel moves some of them as it has become the norm for many. Sad indeed!
