We Nuh Fi Bow!
Isioma Daniel wrote an article for the ThisDay newspaper suggesting that Islam’s founding prophet Muhammed would have approved of the Miss World competition and might have wanted to marry one of the contestants. After she wrote that, the Muslims in Nigeria went crazy, and in the ensuing riots, more than 200 people were killed. Since then, a prominent Muslim leader has called on Muslims to kill Daniel!
Many have been criticising the writer of the article, but I disagree with that. I believe that she should be able to write whatever she wants. The Muslim community should never, ever have started this violent rioting just because someone says something about their prophet that they don’t like. Hell, people say all sorts of things about the Pope all the time, but most Catholics wouldn’t lift a hand to them.
To the best of my knowledge, in most countries, the law would punish anyone if they harmed someone for saying something they didn’t like, and I think that most people would agree with such legislation. As such, I consider the approach that the Nigerian Muslim leader suggests (killing Daniel)to be a bit barbaric, and probably most people would side with me. Possibly even some Muslims would be in our camp, as I don’t think that they would all agree with this death sentence either.
I also don’t understand why everyone is saying she was irresponsible for writing what probably is her opinion. Why are so many people excusing the Muslims for their reaction, as though they were justified in their actions, as though the provocation was of such import that their reaction could be understood. Sometimes I think people of other religious persuasions bend over backwards to facilitate the Muslims, and I think that is wrong! Decide whats right and stand up for it, I say, and let the chips fall where they may!
So they didn’t like what she said, and more than 200 people are dead. I think that if she hadn’t said her piece, it would have been triggered by something else eventually. The area is a hotspot, and you can expect other similar events to occur unless the Nigerian Governmentr takes some SERIOUS action to prevent these things happening…
Don’t worry, Isioma, I’m on your side!
I also agree with Julia Morley, the show MUST go on! Wi nah bow to no guy! (We will not allow other people to force us to do something we don’t want to do!)
Isioma is not in any way at fault. And I agree with her that it is quite likely that Mohammed may well have married one (or several) of these women! But, that is not the point. The Nigerian government allowed the situation to get way too far out of hand.BTW, like I had said before, there are Muslim groups in London who have taken sides with their Nigerian counterparts regarding the contest. No surprises there!
Unfortunately, Daniel isn’t in a country where free speech is prized.
I can’t even comprehend what the writer is going through going into hiding. Damn! knowing people want you dead. Can you say escape goat?
Good job on covering the pagent details!
