Blessed are the Missionaries of the Poor

When I was in Upper Sixth Form at St. Georges College, I was taught a religion-based course by Father Ho Lung. He was a really good man. He really tried with us boys, but some of us gave him a hard time, including me.

I remember that he tried to instill in us a social conscience. He tried to get us all to visit a home where he was working with the poor, many of the old, sick and abandoned. Most of the class went, but I did not! You see, there was some talk of us ministering to these people ourselves, and of us maybe even having to wipe their butts for them, and peeps, I wasn’t having it! smily

Eventually, he gave up trying to get the few of us who had dodged him to go, but not before declaring to all the class that we were nothing but a bunch of hedonists!

Since then, I have had to wipe the butts of a couple of people and it isn’t all that bad! All you have to realise is that you’re helping people a lot! It really isn’t that big of a deal.

Working with the poor and destitute was really his calling however, and Father Ho Lung went on to form his own brotherhood in the church, called “Missionaries of the Poor”. They have gone international, and now they work with the poor and the destitute in Africa, Haiti, India, The Philippines, and Jamaica.

Last Tuesday, d’Trini wrote me an email asking if I wanted to help set up a fund to assist the Haitian refugees in Jamaica. After thinking on the question over Ash Wednesday, I decided that I really didn’t want to be the one to manage the fund myself. I then thought through who I knew who might be better suited for that, and guess who sprang to mind? Nuh Fr. Ho Lung?

I called him today, and he told me that the Missionaries in Cap Hatien are out of food, just as the people trying to help the Haitian refugees here seem to be having difficulties providing food. People, the long and short of it is that the Missionaries of the Poor need help! Monetary help!

Father Ho Lung told me that the best way to send money to tem was by mailing it to their Atlanta or their Jamaican offices. The addresses follow :

By the way, Father Ho Lung is quite an artistic person as well! He sings, dances and writes music and poetry. He has actually produced and performed, along with others in several acclaimed shows, the proceeds of which went to charity. Today, he wrote an article in the Gleaner. In it, he described Jamaica and what is happening to her nowadays, and you could tell so much about how he was feeling by his use of words. I think you all should read it. Parts of it border on sheer poetry! Oonoo check it out!

Bless.

  1. I have read Fr Ho Lung’s piece and am in agreement with you. Parts of his letter was very poetic, but we should’nt be supprise. He is talking about something he is passionate about and thus the words are sincere. His people and his country means a great deal to him.

I remember going to the old people’s home and helping out back when i was in school. Actually, it felt good, does something for your soul.

I’ve had clashes with “de fada man” before, but still he has my ultimate respect.

  2. Hail up string bean!

  3. Father Ho-Lung…now there’s somebody who gets my respect..living or dead!
