The Journey Continues…

So, the job I have taken on to move M’Buthelezi into the twentieth century continues. Today I decided to set her up with an email address in between my usual reading of other peoples’ blogs, which meant that I wasn’t watching her every move like a hawk.

What a task! My girl is not very computer-savvy, so there were a lot of issues with the mouse, and going back to previous pages when she should have been going on to the next page, and losing all that she had typed, but we persevered and she should have a working email addy shortly. Still, something she did made me realise what an up hill task I have ahead of me… after she finally typed in all the requested info to set up an online, free email account, the service provided her with the usual disclaimer/license info page, and do you know that she read the whole thing! smily

Trust me, I have never seen anybody read that thing! Weird, huh? Scary, even!

  1. OMG… you have to be kidding? Iguess you do have your work cut out for you in getting the computer savvy up and running for this gal!

  2. You know MB, if we were more like M’Buthelezi, we would rapidly realize things like:

The fact that Google has the right to read your e-mails when you use G-Mail

The fact that the disclamer inside of Kazaa explicitly states that it’s illegal

The true limits of what we can and can’t do with open-source software

  3. Play Nice MB!!!!!!

  4. Good luck. I need to get my father past the Spider Solitaire phase but at least he is on the machine.

How long did it take her to read the agreement and disclaimer? I have never in all my years of using these machines gotten past the “I agree” or the “I disagree” buttons. She can tell me what it says one of these days.

  5. I bet she got that from Sixty Five because he would probably have read the entire thing. I think the word is “Meticulous”. Now I must admit that I was alarmed when I first say the licensing agreement and asked if I really had to read it….and was I ever overjoyed when Kidlet #1 said “No, just agree to everything”.

Aaah, Mad Bull not all of us were born with a computer in their arms. Amberee and I struggle along.

  6. I would not be too hard on her. Is only in the last three to four years that I have come to where I am today, having no formal computer training. (I guess having MB on call 24/7 was like doing a mini Bachelors…respec my yute!)

You should see my father’s typing speed. I fret about the telephone bill when he goes on to check his e-mail (perhaps every 2-3 weeks). Luckily, he doesn’t get very much.

He once asked me to do a Google search on ‘Accounting Software’. Google came up wid some 9 million found! He asks me if he is going to check all. I reply, “You head tek you!? We have to narrow the search down Daddy”. Eventually he did find what he was looking for.

I guess like anything else, you learn about computers by using them. You stay deh, M’Buthulezi might soon all dis you and write code weh even you caan decipher!

  7. MB, I know the only time I ever read those things is when I worked for an Internet company and it was my job to ensure the end user license agreement and usage terms were what we wanted them to say

Dog, I heard somewhere that GMail scans your e-mail to post relevant advertising.

  8. There is such a thing as becoming ‘too’ computer-savvy!!! Oonoo ask Midas about the new feature he’s added to his computer that ensures I find it too offensive to use

  9. dayum!! i mean, who reads the whole thing?? that’s pretty serious. I don’t even think the people who actually write the disclaimer actually know what it says.

  10. I know exactly how it is when you’re not computer savvy like the rest of the world.

  11. i never read those things. I just click ACCEPT and go right ahead!
