The Age of Consent Issue

I read a likkle something today about raising the legal age of consent in Jamaica from 16 to 18 years of age, but I have a small concern… big men that take on these young girls should get locked up, yes, but what about the teenaged males who manage to score with their teenaged girlfriends, should they too be locked up? I don’t think so!

Do you think a teenaged boy should be locked up because he managed to get laid?

If you agree with me that youths shouldn’t get locked up for doing what comes naturally, how can such a thing be dealt with properly? Can a law be drafted where the big men who are preying on the young girls get fucked legally, whereas the young boys are not breaking the law? Hmmm…

Next thing, this age of consent would have to apply to boys too, wouldn’t it? I mean, there have been cases of predatory females seeking out young, teenaged bwoys to have their wikid ways with… That would have to be against the law too, wouldn’t it? This law will have to be carefully drafted, in my opinion.

Oh yeah! Apparently its Thanksgiving sometime around now… To all of you who do the Thanksgiving thing, have a great holiday, zeen! Take it easy.

  1. i was surprised to know that the age of consent in ja was 16. i agree with you that youngin bwoys who are with yougin gals should not be penalized for being with sistren in thier age groups. i also agree that it should be constituted for the boy as well. there are women predators as well as men.

it sounds like in the gleaner however that they may be missing one thing. young women having children out of wedlock will not stop until the mentality and realization of who they are emotionally and mentally can be changed. girls who do “live” above thier age often look at themselves as women from a very early age missing one or two of the processes that keep them young for a certain amount of time. the breaking down of the family unit is a lack of consistancy and appropriate discipline in the household. when this is absent the cycle of fatherless homes is hard to break. what becomes normal is hard to be seen as irregular or unacceptable.

in no way are these men who abuse women in the act of sex or in any way suitable for any woman. but the gleaner is definitly right that the breakdown of the family unit is a great cause. but how do you stop a yound lady who thinks that she may be able to handle all the consequances and actions of being a big women? or a man for that matter? if he/she believes they can handle themselves they will put themselves in situations where the violance can begin. not because they want to but because its normal. its what is right. its the consistancy that they are use to. raising the age is a good start but healthy ego boosting of the female state would be a tremendous start. this problem is soo universal.

not four months ago a “little” girl i use to teach in sunday school and in bible study has just had her first child. she is only 16 and has decided that in order to be home with her child thru the young years she will not be returning to school. with encouragement she has finished with her ged but i worry about the cycle that is starting with her. most women i see here in this city are single mothers. men are not held accountable therefore with no real attachment to women (usually from no real attachment with mother) they flee when the time is appropriate for themselves. there are men i know of that try to stick around end up being abusers for control of thier household thinking that being a man means ruling everything in thier immediate domain. with this understanding or thinking they become mentally and verbally abusive. or thier is the male that becomes the abusee. he is taken advantage of because he tries to stick around and make it work in a way that his father did not. sorry i’m on a tegent but this is a topic that my peers and i grabble with frequantly trying to figure out how we can show mentees that thier adolescent years should be spent loving themselves and learning what thier value is to themselves and to god. this is such a hard topic but one that i feel i the heart. so much so that it aches sometimes. there is soo much confusion in the young minds that are forced to be old adults. if only i had a magic wand. but since i dont i will keep my heart open as best i can to all the youngins that need love that is pure and simple.

if only they knew life didnt have to be so hard…..

  2. Is it not true that to be an abuser of the age of consent one has to be older than that age itself. Of course, if it is your girl and you are 18 and she is 17 then you may be salt for true.

It’s a hard call. But let’s face facts, nothing is as simple as it seems on paper. What about all those girl children who are presently having sex at 14 years and younger right now! And there is already an age of consent!

  3. I agree with the Bull about teens. I also agree with Ciya.

I heard much discussion about this in the last few days. There is far more than simply having sex in the teens at stake. What is pushing some of this is the transmission of HIV in the young. They are also mentioning teen pregnancy. My problem with all of this is that increasing the age of consent to 18 may not necessarily change any of this. As Ciya rightly says, nuff o dem start from 12-14. There really is more to it that simply making it a law. I’m not sure I have the right answer either.

My yute, MBJr is only 5, but, time flies and is not long from now before tings start happen etc. and experimentation start gwaan…I’m sure he will become a normal yute. So, you going need fe have the chat to him early. Not that I doubt your abilities still…..but as the Godfather I haffi try mek sure seh good sense prevail…zeen!

  4. I agree with Ciya. Things always seem simple and clear cut on paper. This is a moral issue, or a sickness when older men and women abuse younger “partners”. I believe that as parents must teach our children healthy patterns of behavior first. Tough call.

  5. In the US, atleast in Kansas, it all depends on the age difference of the people in question. So youths in the situation you brought up wouldnt be punished. But gross old men (and women) would be.
