Lets Do Lunch, Nuh?

Respect to all crew! What a gwaan, ppl? (Whats happening)

Bwoy, after my observations last weekend re the fall off in blogging on the weekends, you all must be chuckling and shaking your heads at the fact that I haven’t posted anything up till now! smily

Oh well, what can I tell you? A couple of bredrins came by my house last night. We ended up playing some dominos and knocking back plenty of alcohol. I had a fair amount of Appleton V/X Ting, and when that was done I switched to Bacardi Superior with Pepsi. While I didn’t wake up with a hangover, I have been a bit more listless than is usual for me on a Sunday and it was at the point where I didn’t even feel like typing.

Three shits, some food, lots of water and a movie later, I am definitely feeling more lively, you done know. Too much info? Yeah, I know, but I’m just trying to live up to my reputation of crassness. smily

Now that the crassness quotient has been sufficiently increased, lets chat a bit. You know how GLAAD and OutRage! have impressed it upon anyone who will listen that Jamaica is a homophobic nation? Well, I think they need to wheel and come again. I think the majority of the english speaking Caribbean is homophobic, not just Jamaica! Why single Jamaica out?

Looky here, the Cayman Net News ran front page articles about the fact that an all gay cruise would be stopping in Cayman on the 31st of January and about the fact that many people here are angry that the Gov’t has allowed the gays to stop here. I would link the article, but NetNews doesn’t post the current newspaper online, so Thursday’s paper is up, not Friday’s… (Updated: Here is that article now)The issue has inflamed the Caymanians! It has been on the talk shows nonstop. “Cayman is a christian country…”, “God said homosexuality is an abomination!…”, yadda, yadda, yaddah, over and over on the radio, and some group plans to have a protest march when the gays come off the ship. Hey, Cayman has turned away gay cruises in the past, so this represents a step forward if you’re gay or if you believe in non-discrimination based on sexual preferences. For the majority of the Caymanians though, it represents a huge step back.

Hey, if you want to continue reading this, click on the link below, seen?

Now I can’t really swear for all the other islands, but if my blogger bredrins and sistrens from the other islands would let us know how the average Joe in their islands feels about homosexuals, I’d bet a buck or two that most of them would back up my statement. Its a Caribbean thing, not just a Jamaican thing.

Of course, I am not saying that its right! I am not saying that I agree with this prejudice. Personally, I don’t mind if the gay cruisers stop here. It doesn’t bother me in the slightest. All I’m saying is that this mindset exists, and that its a Caribbean thing. Whats your take on this?

Change of topic… You know what? Natty and I approach a lot of things differently. I was telling her today that part of the reason I had left a previous job was that I felt I was being unfairly treated. There was a supervisory position up for grabs and it was between myself and another worker. Both of us had previous managerial experience, though my co-worker had a bit more, but I had been in the company’s employ for a longer period of time.

Now it was a well known fact that my co-worker was friends with the boss man and I began to get the impression that he was favoring the co-worker for the position. Why do I say that? Because he would do some training on the weekends and would only call the co-worker to come in for them, saying that he thought I lived too far away and wouldn’t want to come in. After awhile, I also noticed that the co-worker was attending some management meetings as well, and I hadn’t been invited to these meetings either. I didn’t much like the fact that I might soon be reporting to someone who I had initially trained, especially sisnce I didn’t think that the reason for the other person’s selection was that they had demonstrated more aptitude for the supervisory position.

Since I felt that the playing field wasn’t really level, I began to feel a bit resentful. Did I speak with my manager about all of this? Nope! I just went out and found another job! No one at my office even knew that I had an issue!

At the same time, I must admit that I found the work that I was doing rather boring, so that wasn’t the only reason for me quitting.

Natty is different from me in that she will go see her managers and let them know how she feels. One time when she had just started working, she told a manager, “You know, sometimes when I come in to work in the morning, I feel sick. In fact, I feel to vomit. I’m only nineteen and I don’t think I should be feeling like that!”. She didn’t tell him in a combative way, or in front of lots of people. She went on to discuss the problems she was having with him, she wasn’t arguing or looking for a fight and so the manager took it well. His reply was, “Thats interesting. You know, thats why I like to talk to you, you just tell me like it is, you don’t pretty things up like some of the other employees.”.

Her discussion with him made a positive change occur, because the manager found some merit in what she was saying and he put in place measures to improve her situation at the office. She did that then, and she hasn’t changed much. If Natty doesn’t like what you are doing, she will tell you. She doesn’t care who you are. I think I need to be a bit more like Natty still… at the same time, sometimes you have to just use your feet and walk, you done know.

Hey, I’m getting hungry again. Yeah, I made a lot of room earlier, I guess. I just finished seasoning up some fat chicken legs for lunch… I did them up with some onion, some escallion, a little garlic, salt, black pepper, a little bit of Skotch Bonnet pepper, a couple tablespoons of brown sugar, some soy sauce, some teriyaki sauce and some ketchup. I was going to do my own thing in terms of cooking them, but Natty doesn’t like to let me finish whenever I am in the kitchen. I think she is a control freak or something like that. Everytime I try a little thing in the kitchen, she comes in and starts out with instructions, then she starts helping to do stuff, and eventually, she just takes over the whole process… Anyway, she frigazeed up the chicken legs and its ready now, so I man gone… Take a little prips at the lunch nuh… see it here.

Inna de hours. (Later…)

p.s. Just a little update… lunch was great! Now I’m feeling a bit listless again, because I ate too much. smily

  1. Nice long read.

How de chicken look black so? After you stuff you gut so, shyte number four might well be on the way!

Rass, you switched from VX to Bacardi??

Dr. Spanish seh me mus hail u.

  2. No, I haven’t switched, but the bredrins brought that and my V/X did done.

  3. Caymans attitude towards the “gay cruises” is just ridiculous. When i lived on Cayman i worked as a tour guide and let me tell you, there are nuff nuff gay couples on every boat that drops anchor there. Just because one ship announces that the majority of its passengers are homosexual is no reason not to welcome them.
As for the protest marchers- let he who is without sin cast the first stone, judge not lest ye be judged, etc. Christians need to read the whole bible.

    okay, rants over.

  4. Oh, and the black parts of the chicken were where Natty threw on bread crumbs….

  5. Well said, Jeff.

  6. Madbull some of us are on diets trying to fit into costumes why yuh ha to show the chicken pic now ah feeling hungry a 1am oh lordee…. :o(

  7. I don’t have a problem with the cruise. But most part of the Caribbean people would react strongly to it.My take is to each their own since we all have to live in this world

  8. I think that we need to give people more work to do. The fact that they can sit and get into this whole gay thing so seriously means that they dont have much to do. I suggest that instead of having our garbage picked up on wednesdays and saturdays only, let some of these peole who are calling the radio stations and writing in the paper pick up the garbage in their own cars on mondays and thursdays and they can wash their cars on tuesdays and fridays..
yes ..that is what i think of it..like what i just wrote.. a lot of rubbish!

  9. Hehehe, Natty… Well MB, you already know how I feel. There is no legitimate excuse for discrimination; conversely there is precedence that whenever large numbers of like-minded individuals group together, there is a lessening of regard for the position of others and even their laws… This is not a good thing, as it has led to bad things like war, slavery, riots, and Oprah Winfrey episodes… It seems a bit counterproductive when one seeks to be accepted by using sheer force of numbers on those you claim to wish acceptance from… Personally I’ll be sipping a latte when it all goes down… Nice lookin’ burn chicken too…
