What a Wishy Washy Piece?

What a thing! I just read the editorial in the Sunday Observer and it seems to me that they are trying to sit on the fence and appease two camps! Either that, or they are not sure what they do want to say!

In one breath, they were saying that we need to ‘llow Jah Cure (let Jah Cure be), that according to the law he has paid for his crime and he should now be allowed to resume his place in society. “Remember, the penal system is not just about retribution, it’s also about rehabilitation.”, they say. “[...] the ultimate objective, after extracting the measure of recompense that the judge deems appropriate on behalf of the victim and society, is to equip said individual to resume his place in the world and carry on with the business of life.”.

After this, they make what seems to me to be an about face. They advise those who are interested that the best way to proceed against Jah Cure would be to seek punitive damages in the civil justice system. They end their piece with the following : “With the right arguments, they will find that it is more than possible to convince the court to award damages against convicted rapists, murderers and other individuals who mess up life for their victims.”.

So which is it? ‘Llow Jah Cure, or use the right avenues to gouge out whatever we can from him? What is it to be?

I buy into the idea that a person goes to jail where we attempt to rehabilitate them, and when they come out, they are supposed to be able to take up the pieces of their life and rejoin society. I am therefore saying “Llow” Jah Cure! Really, if we are going to be hounding the ex-convicts after their release, then maybe they shouldn’t have been let out at all?! Is it that the sentence was too low? Should it be life imprisonment for rape? I don’t know, that is for the members of parliament to debate, and if people feel that this is how it should be, push your members of parliament to pass laws to put that into effect.

Apart from that, abide by the law nuh?

“Llow” Jah Cure!

What oonoo think?

I wonder how Curefest went? Man, they were advertising it so hard on the radio here in Cayman, I wonder how many people from over here went? Marangand, didn’t you say you were going? Over to you! How did it go?

You know, I really miss Sabrina! I am not sure how it happened, but I accidentally went to her website today. She is still done with blogging it seems but one of the last posts up on her site got a laugh out of me.

Who is Sabrina?”, you ask? Well, she was the author of “The Slut’s Blog“. It was she who got me started in this whole blogging thing! I wonder what her thoughts on this issue would be?

  1. Let me think about this one and get at you ….

  2. When you make a decision to rape somebody then I dont really care how much you have to pay for the crime. I say, go to jail and pay as much as possible so next time you will think more than twice before you DECIDE to do such a thing.

  3. The way I look at it is this : he raped this girl. He goes to jail. You say he paid for his crime, and so should be allowed to just go back to the way things were before he committed the crime, right ?

But what about the girl? What crime did she commit? She has to deal with the stigma, the nightmares, the fear for the rest of her life.

You all might think this is harsh but my approach to rape and other carnal abuse crimes is that all sexual offenders should be castrated in addition to whatever time they should serve in prison.

  4. I like the man music, I cant lie about that but at the same time I feel a certain way about the crime he was convicted of and not sure I could let him slide and ignore what he did.

I sort of understand the article view though is like a catch 22. they say you need to ease the man but then somewhere in the back of your mind you think that was a sick crime cant ease him completely

  5. Well, Jdid, they did talk about that in the editorial. To let someone be doesn’t mean inviting them to your home for dinner or that you agree with what they did.

For instance, you might eventually hear that Jah Cure was passing through Toronto for a concert. Letting him be doesn’t mean that you should go to the concert. It means not gathering up a group of people to go and protest against giving the show’s promoter a license so that the show cannot be held. It means not picketing the show, and other things like that.

If you feel away about the crime and feel like you would never attend any show he is involved in, then don’t. There is nothing wrong with that at all.

  6. Rape is as much a psychological attack as a physical one so there will always be negative reaction to him, esp. from the fairer sex. It’s easy to say ‘llow de man and its a position I would take given that he has done his time. But I have six sisters. Had one of them been the victim this argument won’t have surfaced. His body would be found shortly after his reentry to society.

  7. [...] not to support Jah Cure by going to his show considering that he was convicted for rape until i saw Madbulls post on this. There was a healthy discussion at the show itself and most persons were of the view that [...]

  8. life imprisonment for rapists sah. hmph

them shudda sue him same time for damages, wouldnt it be too late now? but once him convicted them shoulda sue him, them woulda get all a him record deal money, bout him deh a prison a record

    struups

  9. I say llow jah cure too, Can u imagine our society if we were to ostracise (spelling) every one who came back into society after doing their time, and no i am not saying that ro rape is OK, It most def is not! but we have to believe that people can change and learn from their mistakes….yes the girl’s life has been forever changed and were it my sister/friend/mother/aunt i wudda want to kill him…but can u imagine if we lived in that kind of world…if he has learnt the lesson…then llow him….i did the post on curefest……need to add some pics to it….Tried to link it in the comment but just copy and paste the URL below

  10. Ok here we go…

I will not stop listening to his songs he has paid for his crime as society as demnded …nor will i stop attending his show… i am not doing this to say i support what he did assuming he actually did (which i do believe that he did) …no my actions are in support of our system, no matter how faulty it is it is what works for us if we were to totally disregard it then just imagine. However i do believe that having committed this crime, it may have provided him with a catalyst, which resulted in his career being propelled to dizzying heights … and on this basis i believe natrual justice has not been served. The young lady will have to seek legal regress so as to satisfy this and i will also support her actions if she does so….. guess i am just as wishy washy tooo :D

  11. Well the good book says we must learn to forgive and not judge. The man payed for his crimes and was convicted under some suspicious circumstances as well. I am kind of with MB on this one… if you just can’t stand to support a convicted rapist then don’t support him or listen to his music… but why go out of your way to bring him down?

  12. Jail time and damage awards sound just about right to me.
