The Fool’s Journey

The Fool desires to achieve great things in life, but does not always anticipate the hard work required. Full of curiosity and searching for answers, the Fool symbolizes a new beginning and endless optimism. He must be careful in the decisions he makes, as his lack of experience is often a hindrance. While others may avoid taking on insurmountable odds, The Fool will attempt to accomplish near impossible goals with almost reckless abandon.

When I read the description above, it occurred to me that the description could be about me to some extent. Then I said to myself, “But I am not a fool, am I?”. I will let you draw your own conclusions on the answer to that question, but my answer was, “No, you’re not.”.

Why then does the description sound like it could be one done for me? I thought on it further and realised that, to some extent, the description could apply for most people! If not right now, then at some time in the past. Everyone has been at a similar stage in their life. Its actually a good, or at least, an interesting stage to be in… Think back to when last you were about to step off into something new, whether it be a job, or a relationship, or maybe just something as simple as a new hobby, or as complex as an entirely new life! Tell me if you haven’t been there, and if the description wouldn’t fit you at that time, at least partially. The “attempt nearly impossible goals with reckless abandon” bit is a bit much, isn’t it? Anyway, tell me also whether that wasn’t a good time, or whether feeling that way wasn’t a nice way to feel?

I know that some of you, my readers, are just on the cusp of such a time now. Like I said, it doesn’t have to be in all areas of your life, it could just be something small, but tell us about it. What’s going in your lives now that is new, fresh, and exciting? What is it thats making you curious and driving you to search for answers? Come on, y’all must have something interesting going on! And even if you don’t, you must be looking for something interesting to get involved in, tell us about that that.

Diga me.

  1. Madbull, if you’re interested, there’s a book by Carol Pearson called Awakening the Heroes Within. In this book, Pearson, a Jungian psychologist, discusses 12 archetypes of which the Fool is one.

Her basic argument is that these 12 archetypes are part of what Jung called our “collective unconscious” and depending on the circumstances, one or more of these archetypes will surface.

When the Fool surfaces, it’s usually to begin something new, to try even that which has been tried before as if it’s never been done before. It’s living life for the joy of the journey without care of consequences.

To a certain extent, Jamaican culture is a “Fool’s Culture.” That is, we enjoy life to the fullest. But there is also a downside to it.: The lack of follow through.

Interestingly, the Yoruba archetype of the Fool is….. you guessed it…… Anancy!

    Geoffrey

  2. I think you are confusing the description of a fun loving or easygoing person with that of a fool. Where as you may exhibit certain traits of the Fool from time to time, the Fool exhibits most or all of these traits time and again.

The Fool “must be careful in the decisions he makes, as his lack of experience is often a hindrance”, but rarely does the Fool do so. Indeed the Fool’s lack of experience and reckless abandon causes the Fool to see no need for care in his decisions and even after being advised of the need for care, the Fool rejects the advice and acts the Fool.

That description doesn’t match the apparent personality of this blog’s author. I could point out numerous posts that seem to lack “endless optimism”.
