The Miss Cayman Pageant Finals: A Review.

Saturday night at the Lions Centre a new queen was crowned. The theme for this year’s Miss Cayman Islands was glamorous Hollywood. There was an explosive opening act with each of the 8 contestants representing an influential actress or singer from a bygone era.

The casual wear segment had its highlights and disappointments. Many of the girls opted for itsy bitsy shorts with a top making it a forgettable ensemble. It being a pageant “casual wear” should really be chic and fun with loud colours. Special mention to Hortencia Jackson, who really got the gist and wore a hugging tropical inspired dress. Also to Rachel King whose flirty feminine orange outfit graced her immaculate figure elegantly.

Swim wear is always a favourite! All of the contestants clearly put in the time and effort to be physically ready for this section; there wasn’t a dimple in sight! Special Mentions would have to go to Rachel King and Nicosia Lawson who were well toned with that extra bit of definition, but not too much so that they still belonged to the pageant and not a body building competition.

The Evening Wear Segment was a delight to watch as the ladies glittered on stage and showcased their intelligence. Special Mention Gowns would be Hortencia Jackson and Nicosia Lawson and for their answer Nicosia Lawson, Danielle Ebanks and Olivia Polack. It is also note worthy that Miss Polack managed to pick the most difficult question in the bunch. I strongly disagree with allowing political questions to be asked at a pageant. Her question was regarding the notorious “Roll over policy” and its efficacy. She was very diplomatic and didn’t stumble with a single word.

Hortencia Jackson was the winner of the C&W star quality Miss Photogenic Text competition. I was concerned that this would have been more of “people’s choice” and popularity and not so much “photogenic” being the deciding factor but it played out well and in my opinion the most photogenic did win.

Ceretta Harvey a pageant veteran having entered in 2006, was voted Miss Personality.

Rachel King was awarded second runner up and also garnered best legs.

From the beginning of the night the crowd favourite was, Danielle Ebanks. The judges certainly felt the heat from the crowd and awarded her best smile and best in gown. She wore her gold mermaid style gown well but to me it seemed too tight and restrictive therefore hindering her from gliding elegantly on stage. At one point the audience was certain that this was the new Miss Cayman, even the then current title holder Rebecca Parchment, expressed her confidence about the final decision back stage. But the scores had a different plan in mind; Danielle Ebanks was first runner up. Second runner up was Rachel King.

Who is the new Miss Cayman? Nicosia Lawson.

She possesses two bachelor degrees and was heavily involved in a lot of community work years before the pageant was a flicker in her imagination. Well deserved but as per usual there is the gripe of her being a “status holder” rather than a born Caymanian. She outshined the 5 ft 5 Danielle Ebanks fair and square but because she is born in St. Lucia so she’s apparently not “Caymanian” enough to be Miss Cayman (I would love for someone to define what makes you Caymanian enough to do these things). She has represented Cayman overseas in sports and youth affairs, why didn’t anyone complain then? If they don’t want the possibility of a “Paper Caymanian” winning then they shouldn’t allow them to enter. I hope and PRAY this has nothing to do with the colour of her skin, but still wonder what would the reaction have been if she were light?

Congrats to ALL the contestants, takes a hell of a lot of guts and for the new Miss Cayman, a job WELL DONE and a crown WELL DESERVED. If Cayman is to have any chance at an international pageant I place my bet on her being the one to do it because of her exotic features, incredible figure, impressive resume and phenomenal intelligence.

  1. Paper Caymanians! That’s something new I’ve learnt in the past couple of weeks. And you’re right, Why didn’t anyone complain then? Be proud of your countrymen whether they are of paper or not.

Can you imagine if they started using that phrase in Canada…Paper Canadians. Man, that would be 80% of the current population.

MB, Thanks for the blog roll. I check out your site, obviously and I like what I read so I am returning the favour.

  3. uuugggh!!! What a crock of ridiculousness. If she’s good enough to represent the country in other ways why can’t she be Miss Cayman? Wouldn’t it be interesting if she actually did win the international Miss World? I wonder what they would say then. Would she still not be good enough?

I sure hope you guys are preparing for Gustav. Already some roofs have blown off in Portland. :???:
Ann (MobayDP)s last blog post..Post 368. Signing Off.

  4. People are always so critical of beauty queens, it’s as if they’re never good enough,,,unless of course they go all the way and win an international pageant.

Hope she’s mentally tough as she is beautiful (and boy is she beautiful) and doesn’t allow herself to be affected by all the criticism.

    Gussies last blog post..Wild Gustav?

  10. Bwoy, Doc., I am tired of writing about hurricanes now. I find beauty contests to be an altogether more enjoyable topic. Anyway, it wasn’t me who wrote this post. No, I asked a lady I know who has an interest in beauty pageants and who happened to have attended the final night to give me a review and this is the result.

  11. My God what an angel! And smart too. And she’s from St. Lucia? Need to go there someday. What’s with all this bull (no offense) about her not being Caymanian enough? She won fairly didn’t she?

Leons last blog post..My thoughts on…the girl that cried “Georegia”

  12. Island chauvinism !!

  13. Well, they cuss on the radio about her and her right to be Miss Cayman Islands, but she cool! She didn’t really get a fight. I read where one of the past winners was given a much harder time. As a matter of fact, members of the audience at the show attempted to forcibly remove her crown, and the car that she won as a prize in the pageant was torched! Dem take dis pageant thing WAY more seriously than I do, can you believe it?

  14. so how u never mek we kno seh is not u write it. is jus now i going back and seeing the lil siggy at the end there…

  15. “there wasn’t a dimple in sight! ” Oh no dear there was nuff dimples. I was right in the front and was very surprised but I will be decent and not call any names though. :

She is from St Vincent and she definitely earned her win. The naysayers will get over it.
