Big Up to the Jamaican Broadcasting Commission!
I suppose I should write a post, I mean, its been awhile!
I have been very busy of late, with scarcely even time to scratch my head, so I have not been airing my views on the blog here that regularly. Indeed, sometimes I feel like I am not even interested enough in ANYTHING to write about it, but thats just tiredness… I think.
So, what is there to talk about? Hmmm…. Okay, everyone else is talking about it, so maybe I should just shut up about it and be unique… or maybe not! This stuff is important!
So the Broadcasting Commission in Jamaica has taken a stand against the “daggerin” type lyrics in dancehall! What is my position on this? Well, I think the DJs, the singjays, et cetera, have gone too far. Indeed, They went too far, LONG TIME! I think that maybe there is a time and place for explicit lyrics and if people want it, they can go and seek it out, but I don’t think that music has a place on mainstream radio, and also, it shouldn’t be played anywhere where kids can pick it up and be singing it and knowing all the lyrics and the dance moves and shit like that. Call me old fashioned if you want, but thats what I think.
What about soca and hip hop and so on? I don’t care what the genre is! If the lyrics dutty, drop dem too! Thats what I think! Only thing is, why not also drop the music with overly violent lyrics too! You know them, the songs about shit like blowing peoples brains out, or cutting peoples throat, or making peoples marrow fly, etc. etc. … they should be banned from airplay too!
And seriously, I am sick of the bleeping out too, or muffling some words… ban the whole of them! Let us have music where we can hear everything! Every rass word! If you have to bleep a part, nuh boddah play it! I applaud the Broadcasting Commission’s ban! I say extend it!
I think that when some foreigners look on and see how we have the children dancing, and if they could understand the lyrics, the only conclusion they could come to is that they are witnessing the signs of a society going deep into decline, one where the people are regressing and turning in brutal savages… What do you think?
Foreign now: You all heard how Michael Phelps was hitting the pipe at someone’s party and a picture was taken and he has been losing advertising dollars? Well, what do you think about the hypocrisy in this mornings news? The authorities identified some of the people in the pictures and have arrested about 8 of them, charging them with drug related charges like possession, distributing, etc…. okay, so they have them on film, but I bet they have to prove that the substances being burned was ganja or whatever it was… Anyway, hear this bit! They arrested 8 people, right? None of these people was Michael Phelps! What????
By the way, rest in peace, Caylee.
And good luck to the Reggae BoyZ who take on Nigeria in a friendly today in London!
Lord, please let Chris Brown visit Cayman soon, mek ah get a chance to bruck up him bumbo!
(Yeh, I know I have just been licking out against the violence, but I not planning to slit his throat or make his marrow fly, just give him some thump and kick, thats all… and he richly deserves it!)
Peace. I’m out. TTYL.
yea its abut time they ban some of that slackness. they should in all music. actually i guess the dancehall guys can just make radio friendly clean mixes if they want airplay. like how in rap busta had that me and my chick song and the original version was slightly more offensive.
phelps is a star he getting star treatment and dont let me get started on chris brown

I agree with the Broadcasting Commission’s move too, only problem is that it took too long. Wrote about it too myself.

daggering is of no importance to dance hall. its yesterday’s news. today daggering, tomorrow gun tune. Its better to ban the song, save some money, focus on the economy and leave dancehall alone. Songs have been banned before, many people can remember Bounty Killer’s “Anytime”.
What a way you old! You a turn into one a dem bald head.
My position on the matter is very much like your own. To be clear, I think that the “artists” should be able to write, record and perform (in appropriate venues) any lyrics they choose.
However, public over the air broadcasts are not an appropriate or acceptable venue for explicit lyrics. So, radio should be out. Likewise, pounding systems that can be easily heard for miles around are equally unacceptable venues. This should have been banned a very long time ago. Frankly, I thought they were already banned and that simple governmental slackness was impeding enforcement.
But, I’d like to point out that the ban should be against explicit lyrics. That means more than just raunchy sexual content. Explicit lyrics would most definitely include graphic depictions of violence, illegal activities and sexual content. Most places have these decency laws and references to slitting the throats of policemen qualifies as indecent in most places.
Chris Brown will certainly get what he deserves. He will almost certainly get jail time for his actions and, when inside, di bredda a go deal wid im.
i co-sign this whole post…now i dont have to go and write about it all
Peppers last blog post..How many calories do you burn running up some steps?
Agreed.Time to clean up the music..all music. Not that am a prude or anything but some of those lyrics are just too disgusting.
Happy Vday
They needed to to that from long time. Ever since I could remember dancehall always had slackness in thier lyrics. They have no regard for children and older folks being subjected to that garbage. Same goes for the rap music, preaching thier gangsta crap. I really don’t listen to that trash.
I read the article about chris brown, although its wrong to choke her, when i really look at it from the other side of the coin; If I had a brand new lamborghini I spent couple hundred thousands on, and somebody take my keys and toss it out the window were i cant find them, I’d wanna choke the crap out of them too. But at the same time, they can afford to just get the keys replaced and the locks changed.
I agree…. the ban should be extended. I believe there is a direct correlation between the sex and violence laced lyrics of dancehall and the inappropriate sexuality and aggressiveness of our young people.
We have descended from a proud and fearless group of West Africans and we need no help in stirring up aggression.
But I think another issue is the lack of parenting…children are having children and many who are not children are just not sound parents. They do not themselves censor for their children so society has to step in.
I am frankly frustrated with the degeneration of dancehall… I love the genre but can somebody talk about something other than homosexuality?
But, as mi granny would say, “fisherman talk bout fish.”
Having said all that, I openly declare an interest in the Rompin Shop song,… though I only heard the ‘clean’ version. I heard it at at wedding in Jamaica in January mind you. The partner was there. And wine was made to bruk. But that was an adult gathering of 20nuff to 30 somethings (and older).
The bottom line is APPROPRIATENESS!
Children do not know how to behave like children because adults think that they are cute when the act out “force ripe” behaviour!

This is not about Jamaicans or race…this is about right and wrong…Im sorry, but Im much more frightened of those slasher rock bands that talk about disfiguring people, being sadistically evil against what is differnt, and glorifying satanism….To me thats a true abomination, where as Hip Hop and Reggae is based on poor people struggling to survive in an overly aggressive place and identifying with there struggle…they just say what they feel they have to and they should…the degrading of women was popular long b4 hip hop and reggae through rock…but who talks about that…violence…well, if thats what u see every day where u live, and if u feel that if u dont speak like u would do the same thing that u saw sumone do, but still knew it was wrong, then it could happen to you, can u really blame them…and the gay thing, well…sum people were raised one way and reLLY dont know any better, the Jamaican cultur is highly against gays and thats just the way it is…can anyone get mad at the Jews for saying if ur not Jewish ur going to hell…or Christianity or Islam for that matter…? its all a matter of opinion, dont ban the music, try to understand the culture, theres more to reggea hip hop and other black music then Bling Bling, shoot em up, and lets all F*ck these B*tches…it just doesnt get mainstream radio play…I am a Jamaican that loves all types of music, I dont promote negativity and I seldom listen to music that tells me that being negative is good…but I must admit that I love sex, drugs and guns in movies….so whats worse…? the 10 highest paid musicians that get promoted to glorify guns, violence, anti gay & degrading of women to the people that want to hear it, tune in to the radio stations, buy tickets to concerts or purchase the CDs …or the TV and movie makers that promote those very same things but even more graphically as they include imagery and advertising that make it even look better to children and adults alike…actually to everyone that has a TV and watches commercials and movies on them…? If you want to talk about wrong, we should start there…Music is all about self expression, negative or positive, right or wrong…it cant really be judged cause its personal preference…If you dont want to hear it or see it, dont promote or support it…Now, for the people that for what ever reason do support it and promote it, its there choice to subject themselves to it…God gave us choice, and it shouldnt be judged or taken away, cause wheres the freedom and democracy in that!?!
