A kind word can turneth away wrath…

Mr. LexI went to the Discount Pharmacy by Manor Park tonight… We were short of a couple of things, so although I was tired, I had to go. The fact that I had to be dialled in to work from late last night until 3:00 AM this morning trying to get the database up after fixing a problem served to stretch my nerves until they were quite, quite taut. Yeh mon, I and I was angry… angry… angry… (I was a bit tense…)

I picked up all my stuff and got in line to go to the cashier, when I noticed this fellow lurking alongside me… From the way he was hanging about, I guessed he wanted to go to the cashier to check out before me, although I had joined the line first. My blood immediately began to boil, and I began to ready myself to get all loud and aggressive in the Hussy’s store… Grrrrr… I mentally bared my teeth and snarled at the fellow… This was conveyed to him by the way I moved up in the line, blocking any access he might have to getting in front of me without getting physical and simply shoving me out of the way (which I would not have taken lightly, mind you).

The fellow in front of me moved and I surged forward, placing my basket on the counter and immediately starting to unpack it. The guy who seemed to have been threatening to bore the line then said “Excuse me, sir. I wonder if you would allow me to cash out my two items, as you have a basketful, I’ll be done really quickly?”, and like a flash, all the adrenaline and the attitude left me. My sails were becalmed, I tell you! I had been in exactly the same situation before, watching people unloading bales of goods while I stood by and fervently wished they would allow me to pass them as I had only one item or two. Plus, he had cash in his hand and I had my card, and you “done know” (know all too well) how long it takes to process credit and debit cards here. I immediately said “Sure.” and moved over and allowed him to check out before me. You see how easy it can be to defuse a tense situation sometimes?

When I was exitting the store, I looked at the guy again, and noticed that it was Mr. Lexxus, a popular Jamaican D.J. (Rapper. He did the hit song “Full 100“, which I absolutely loved). Based upon what I know of how some of these D.J.’s behave, it was a pleasant surprise to me that he turned out to have any social graces at all.

  1. MB, you must bear in mind that not everyone is a ruffian like yourself, after all the man was VERY decent:-)

  2. It shouldn’t be suprising when people treat one another well, yet many times it is. The world is full of bastards, especially at the store. We all take for granted the common courtesies that used to be second nature.

  3. That’s nice that you let him through and that he was so nice about it too - rather than saying “Hey, you’ve got a bunch of stuff, let me go first.” Sounds like everyone ended up happy.

Why don’t I ever run into celebrities at the store? :)

  4. When I read the first paragraph, and how angry that you said you were, I assumed that the photo must be you. Mr. Lexxus looks kinda angry to me.

  5. MB - live and learn, not all good things come in wonderful packages…you can always find a single diamond in the rough!

  6. You catch more flies with honey than you do vinegar. ;) Sometimes, it pays off to spread the love and good vibes. btw…have I mentioned how much I like your new digs? lol I can’t remember if I did or not.

  7. Yeah, he does look angry. I think its just his “DJ/Rapper” look. Thay all try to look like that, it seems to me. You can’t claim to be a rapper if you don’t have an angry look.
Skits, you did mention that you liked the site, thanks for saying it again tho’.
All :- yeah, you’re right. It would really be nice if we could get this sort of behavior to manifest itself more…

  8. With that thought in mind MB - I refer to a line of a Michael Jackson song, ‘I’m starting with the man in the mirror.’ Just a thought, no hard feelings though you know I like you just the way you are :-) You done know! Not to mention Natty my big friend!

  9. Oh Lord have mercy…
