Now how do I explain this stuff properly?
So today, I’m went to buy the Sunday newspapers and I took MBJr. with me. MBJr. said “Daddy, last night Mummy was showing me some pictures and I saw one of me in the jungle, looking at some monkeys.”
That picture was taken when we last went to Tampa. We took MBJr. to Busch Gardens, and we took that picture with him standing looking at a couple of statues of gorillas that they have right outside the area where the apes are situated. It really does look like a jungle, so his description was apt.
He said “Do you remember taking me there?”.
I answered “Yes, MBJr. That was in Tampa. You know, thats where Mama is right now.” Mama is his name for Natty’s Mom.
MBJr. said “Oh yes! I want to go there and see Mama, and go back and see the animals!”.
I said “Yes, MBJr., we will soon go back.”.
He asked me “Where is Tampa?”.
I said “Tampa is in the U.S., America. We are in Jamaica and Mama is in Tampa, which is in America.”.
“Oh.” he replied.
So I drove up to Manor Park Plaza to use the A.B.M., because I was plumb out of cash. Now MBJr. knows Manor Park really well, so when I turned in there, he said to me “Where are we now?”.
I replied “We are in Manor Park.”.
“I thought you said we were in Jamaica?!”.
LOL I remember having those conversations with Aaron when he was younger. Explaining where things were? Oy. And the concept of time: “When is tomorrow?” “How long is that?” “What’s a minute?” hee. He finally learned the Sesame Street scale. (It’s one Sesame Street long–instead of one hour)
It is not easy explaining some things to children, they tend to have very simplistic minds and take a lot of things literally. As MBJr. gets older it will become easier, till then, just enjoy the fun and in the case that you can’t explain fully, “I don’t know works sometimes”….Then of course the question that they all love to ask is …“WHY??” (Listen to me nuh my yute, it sound like seh me have nuff pickney already to rahtid!!)
Yeah, Skits, time is another one. For MBJr., “last night” really means some arbitrary time in the past. It could really be last night, but then it could also mean last week, or last month !
Dr D., “I don’t know” doesn’t work very weel. At this stage, he thinks Natty and I know everything, and “I don’t know” often just gets him frustrated or annoyed, because he seems to think we know, but just don’t want to tell him.
I showed him those pictures a couple of months ago.(last night)
