Just Chillin’
I was home today watching RETV and let me tell you, they run some pretty risque videos, man. Dr. D passed through and we were watching this particular video (Look Good Machine by KC Jockey) where the guy is sitting on the couch with a woman, watching television. The guy eventually puts the moves on the woman, and tries to caress her between her legs. She pushes his hand away, so my youth decides to drag out a a thick wad of bills and start counting them out. When the woman sees this, she smiles, then reaches out, grabs his hand and pushes it back between her legs.
At that point the Doc. exclaimed “Rass Claat! Is no wonder that all the little young girls are getting pregnant from twelve or thirteen!”.
Now I am a red blooded male, and this video, and indeed the vast majority of the videos being shown have lots of nubile beautiful women wining up their bodies to the music, so I’m sure it won’t come as a big surprise when I tell you that I enjoy watching these videos, but then again, some of the messages they are sending are not really good ones, and they probably are influencing yoiunger viewers in a negative way. Maybe they should start rating videos and then provide a way for parents to block movies, videos, and maybe even the news from being watched by our young ones…
Speaking of teenage pregnancy, I noticed in yesterday’s Observer that a Member of Parliament (Ernie Smith) suggested that the Government should institute a policy of performing virginity tests on school girls when they return to school after holidays!
Can you believe it! What a mad rass, nuh true?
He didn’t actually say what should be done if there was a case of a missing hymen, but there was some suggestion that if the schoolgirl was under the legal age, then the police could question her with a view to identifying who was responsible for this improper advance and prosecuting them!
Another MP suggested mandatory sterilization for women after they had three children! Read up on these crazy MPs here. Today, Jamaicans for Justice and two women’s advocacy groups spoke out on these two suggestions. Read what they had to say here.
Tomorrow is a public holiday, Emancipation Day, to be exact. I will be heading out for five days to a wonderful villa by the beach in the country with many members of Natty’s family. I am not sure how much posting will be going on while I am there, but check and see, ‘k? I may just write lots, depending on how things work out. To all my readers from Jamaica, I wish you a wonderful long weekend. Respect to all crew, zeen!
Good post.
First off regarding the music videos, I believe that any parent with young children (below age 13) who decides not to have cable TV in their home is making a good decision for their children. Too much is being portrayed sexually in these videos..there is scarcely one I can think of that does not have a bed scene or some sort of ‘wining’ or gyration taking place. As you rightly say, they send the wrong signals out to the audience who are mostly teens and people in their early twenties. The rappers, hip hop artistes and Dance Hall DJs are also to blame as the lyrics (and expletives) in many of these ’songs’ are very demeaning to women, and promote promiscuity and casual sex. In these times, that’s the wrong message. I need not spell out HIV.
I don’t watch these channels too regularly, but when I do, I like you have warm blood and lots of testosterone in the system. I agree that lots of the girls in these videos are very nublie. Watching them can easily give a man ‘head’ache!
We are past that impressionable teen phase of our lives, we’ve been there (perhaps made some mistakes ourselves), but we now know right from wrong. We have to look out for the young people who are being influenced by these messages in the media.
As for the MP’s suggestion about the vaginal examination of school girls…we chatted about it at work yesterday, all agreed that it was crazy to rass!
Furthermore, what the hell does the presence or absence of a hymen prove anyhow??? Nutten! It can buss when you doing ballet or riding on a horse.
I can see the point of view of the one who suggested the sterilization after three children of women though. Probably I may get flack for this one, but for many of our women (and men) who lack education and control over their reproductive capabilties, this may be the way to go. Too many unwanted children have been bred in this country and the spawning continues unabated. They don’t work, and cannot afford to raise children properly. The vicious cycle continues. Too many of these types cannot be relied upon to use a reliable birth control method, so tubal ligation may well be the answer for them.
I could labrish more on this, but as a nuh my blog, I will cease.
Live it up inna country rude bwoy, I envy you likkle blood cleat!
One more thing, it’s Independence Day on de morrows. Emancipation Day is Wednesday 6th.
Me and mi big mout…I mixed up de dates, you’re right.
That suggestion about the exams for schoolgirls was unbelievable. Why don’t we just jump right back to the dark ages? Bleh.
The mandatory sterilization idea was pretty hard to think about as well, but I agree there needs to be something done about all the people having babies with no thought- that goes for my country as well as yours!
