Fight the Popups!

I told Natty that I was going to post some pictures that I have so that she could look at them, and at the same time, I decided to post them on a free site so as not take up too much space on my madbull4.net domain. Unfortunately, the free site had the barbaric practice of sending up advertisements at the same time that they were sending the page that surfers requested… yes, people, they were in the nasty habit of sending popups!

SO hear what! It is nice to not have to deal with popups, but the infestation is all over the net. Whats a poor surfer to do? Click the link below to see what I think is a decent solution to this problem…

Well, there are a number of software products out there that purport to limit your popup experience. Numerous versions of firewall software exist that purport to do the job, and there are other bits of software out there that perform this function as well…

In my experience though, I have found that there are friendly, useful popups, and then there are those stinking advertisement ones! Some popups you want, and some you just don’t. smily

Which popups do you want? Well, whenever you click on the comments link on someone’s blog, the comments “pop up”! At leat they do, unless you’re running a pop up blocker. Its not only comments for MovableType (MT) blogs that suffer like this, there are many other sites that use popups in a friendly, useful way. As an example, I have a smiley solution that works with MT as well. While you are writing a post, you have access to a url which when clicked, pops up a pallet of smiley icons. You can then click on the icon of your choice to include it in your post. Its a neat tool, but it doesn’t work if popup blocking is enabled, you simi?

As such, a special type of popup blocker is needed. One that can identify “friend or foe” amongst the different popups would really be desirable, but I don’t know if such a popup blocker exists at this time…

The closest that I have seen to this ideal is this little fellow, called “Pop Up Blocker and Ad Killer for Kazaa”. What I like about it is that it lives in the system tray. If you are surfing and are on a blog and want to comment, you can click on the Pop up Blocker’s icon in the tray and a window will appear which will allow you to disable it. Once disabled, you can comment to your hearts content. If you then surf over to a site with the evil popups, you simply click on the popup blocker’s icon again and enable the popup blocking functionality. Immediately, it starts to perform its function. It only takes three mouse clicks to switch between states. Really easy to use, and yet, so functional.

Feel free to download this software and try it out, and if you know of some popup blocking software that works better, let us know, nuh?

  1. Popups is one thing, Bulk mail is another infestation of the net. Though it does not count to my mailbox storage limit, as you done delete dem so, more to rass! Anyway……..Maybe nuff man out deh who a suffah from small hood, feel seh is everybody stay so!

  2. I have had the experience before of using a pop-up blocker than being unable to comment to some blogs… this is with Norton, but I have it configured now to let me comment to the blogs - thank goodness! However, once in a while something changes and a couple of the reads I like get blocked and I can not again comment (and I just don’t have the computer smarts to work out all the problems that arise quickly, so it becomes frustrating.)

  3. Desiree, maybe you could turn off the popup blocking feature of that Norton software you have. Let it do whatever else it does, and then try this little popup blocker on for size… just an idea…

  4. maybe yes… hey, I see you have a thing on the right here, says ‘users online’ and lists me and 10 anonymous… where the devil did you get that???!
