Competition
Bwoy, the long working hours of the weekend and Monday caught up with me last night. I went to bed at about 9:00 P.M., which is unheard of for me! I feel much better for it, however.
I read a newsitem somewhere about Cable and Worthless Wireless pulling their advertising dollar from the West Indies cricket team. The article said that they were seeking other advertising opportunities with the ICC… At the time I was a bit annoyed, thinking that C&W had abandoned the team because of their poor recent performance.
Well, this morning I read another newsitem (in the Caymanian Compass) that suggested that Digicel has outbid them and won the contract for sponsorship of the West Indies!
People, if you want to see competition at work, look at the Caribbean Telecomunications Sector. I am sure that plenty of UWI Business School students are studying those companies. In almost every situation, C&W has shown themselves to be the big, bumbling giant, ‘Goliath’, while Digicel has been like the nimble, quick footed ‘David’.
If C&W is not careful, Digicel will soon slot a stone into its sling and clap C&W in the centre of its forehead and slew it. Digicel deserves all the success it has been enjoying, IMHO! They offer a better service than C&W in Jamaica, and trust me, Cable & Worthless was gouging our eyes out in the past, and were it not for Digicel, they would have continued with that practice.
At the same time that this battle for sponsorship took place, the West Indies won a one day match against England!
I wonder if they will return to better form under Digicel’s sponsorship? I for one would be happy if this was to come to pass, and I am sure Digicel would be happy too. Maybe the West Indies will be able to emulate Digicel’s winning ways!
We will see. But true what you say of Digicel, they have mowed thru the region yes. C&W had to bend under the competition in order to stay afloat. A little competition is a damn good thing. Whether it will affect the performance of West Indies cricket…who knows?? But I’m the last person who would really care to hazard a guess! (Yes Yamfoot, I still haven’t got cricket in my blood…probly me not really a West Indian eh? )
Competition is always good.
AS for the cricket, I’m with Dr. D.! The only other sport that compete in the ‘MOST BORING SPORT’ section are baseball and golf.
Please, any other sport, please!!!!!
