And Miss Jamaica is…

Well, the Miss Jamaica World final is now history. Tonoya Toyloy is Miss Jamaica World 2004! Congratulations to her. Congratulations to Jamaica too, as people were able to vote for their favourite competitor this year using cell phones, and Tonoya was the winner of the popular vote. Jamaica got the girl of their choice it seems! Big up! smily

As for me, I had been singing the praises of Carolyn Yapp, who placed second, so I guess I didn’t do too badly, huh? I am going to have to adjust my beauty sensor to account for this new ‘popular’ vote thingie, if thats possible.

Interestingly enough, right after Michelle was complaining that dark-skinned, nappy-headed girls were not winning this competition enough, a dark-skinned, nappy-headed (albeit creamed) contestant won! Michelle also said that these girls had never gone on to do well in the Miss World. I kind of disagreed with her, but on this occasion, let us see how Tonoya does nuh?

  1. I don’t know if I could judge still, too many choices. hard to chooooose caaan’t continue. but if you look at the picture still the three girls look like carbon copies of each other or is it just a bad picture?

  2. Bwoy MB maybe is age but the choices just seem to be getting fewer and fewer in these competitions. I caught a glimpse of it on TV and I was like ….Alrighty then???

  3. MB, I stop judge beauty contest many years ago, because I find that, with rare exceptions, I would probably date any of those fine looking young ladies (with a few exceptions).

    {arf,arf}

  4. I’m with you MB, I think Carolyn Yapp is the best looker too!

  5. But Owen? yu need glasses maan…

  6. I don’t have anything against her, but somehow, she doesn’t come across as a Miss World. (Or maybe I am being judgemental)

    owen has a point, most of them looked like variations on a theme.

  7. Here is a letter to the editor that reiterates what I wrote above.

  8. Firstly, I, like Natty, disagree that they are merely variations on a theme. They certainly were not. Still, the Doc wears glasses and maybe Owen does too… The only theme was that they were all good looking young women. Aside from that, they were all quite different. As for Tonoya, Doc, well, she wasn’t in my top ten, still.

  9. she was in my top ten because I heard her on a TV show and she sounded the most mature. Well at 24, what you expect.

    somebody commented on a blog that she will get eaten alive in the competition.

    now lemme ask you this…apart from exposure of Jamaica to the world (do we need any more?) what are the benefits of the Jamaican entrant winning miss world. i dont mean benefit to the contestant, obviously there is money. But to the country jamaica, what are the benefits?

  10. Michelle, I hate to answer a question with another question(s), but what really are the benefits to Jamaica of winning the World Cup of football, or even making it to the finals? What are the benefits of getting some gold medals in the Olympics? What are the benefits to the West Indies of winning that little competition they did recently? Do you see what I am saying… Whatever these things do for us, the Miss Jamaica does similar things… we won’t argue which does more for us, just that its similar.
