Story Time Again?
Back on the story book thing. I read something about Enid Blyton recently that suggests that she was a most prolific writer indeed. I remember reading it long ago too, which may well be whay I felt that the authors of the Hardy Boys and the Nancy Drew and the Bobbsey Twins series were real people… After all, if Enid Blyton could do this, why not them?
For an astonishing 80 years, Enid Blyton has been storyteller extraordinaire to generations of children. Arguably the most prolific children’s writer of the last century, she has a staggering 4000 stories and some 700 books to her credit. At some stages in her life she wrote 10,000 words a day and for at least one year in the 50s she was averaging a book every 5 days.
Still, after Sharon Leach’s revelation on Sunday, I am beginning to wonder if that stuff about Enid is just lies! Hmmm…
On the movie review scene, I saw a couple of movies recently, ‘The Terminal‘ with Tom Hanks and Catherine Zeta Jones, and Ocean’s Twelve, with lotsa people as you might expect from the name of the film, but also including Zeta Jones. First, ‘The Terminal’… I enjoyed this movie immensely! Quite funny, even though I heard that its based on a true story. All I can say is this! If the real story goes even close to the movie, the character played by Tom Hanks is one crazy guy! (not psychotic or anything, but crazy nonetheless) and the Airport Administrator is almost totally EVIL! I am sure that God has a specially hot little corner of Hell waiting for the Airport Administrator’s arrival. If you haven’t seen it yet and you’re contemplating going out to rent a movie, I would recommend that you give ‘The Terminal’ a try.
Next, ‘Ocean’s Twelve’! Now I watched this movie and suffered through many interruptions from MBJr., and also Natty was constantly getting up to go do some household chore which meant pausing the film, and to top it off, the DVD player was freezing up every now and then, maybe it needs a cleaning or something, and maybe all of that factored in to forming my opinion of this movie, but I could scarcely make head or tails of what was going on in the show. At the end, I was left wondering why they bothered to make the film, because the plot seemed weak to me. I don’t recommend this one, but if you watched it and felt it was great, well, maybe I’ll give some thought to renting it again and trying to watch it in a distraction-free environment… NOT! No way, sah! I ent watching that again! It wasn’t worth it.
On a totally different topic, I noticed yesterday that the Jamaica Gleaner has started to print a section (Weird News From Around the World) that they had stopped printing in the past. Apparently there was a high demand for it (and I am not surprised at that, because people need something to laugh about, especially in stressed-out Jamaica, what with tax increases and job losses and increasing debt and the seemingly invincible scourge of crime). Anyway, I saw one item in that that I thought was really funny. The piece follows :
Last month Mamadou Obotimbe Diabikile was shot by police and arrested after his unsuccessful attempt to rob the Mali Development Bank in Bamako, Mali. He was partly hindered by the nearly seven pounds of magic charms he was wearing which he believe had made himself invisible.
Bwoy, if only all criminals could be as stupid as that, eeeh? ![]()

what de! ya read the part a de article about how enid blyton had homoerotica in she books cause nobby a pay the man by lettin him rub his head. lawd ave mercy. people duz read some things into a lil book doah. shame
on another note i rememer when we used to play basketball or football an a fella pick off your pass he used to say ‘man i read that pass like it was a enid blyton’ lol
Ocean Twelve was crap for true. I think I had written about it a while back. It seems to have some basis in the previous one (wifey told me that it is a sequel) and too many flashbacks and irrelevant appearances by big name stars.
Trying hard to make a comment…but really coming up with nada. Blame it on the VX and coconut water at the gathering after the funeral.
@Doc - Cho, you are a neanderthal, thats the problem
@jdid - I really just read the top of the article. I glimpsed something about that, but I thought immediately that it was crap and didn’t read it in detail.
@ Scratchie - good to have my opinion corroborated.
Feisty rass you!
Do kids do any reading these days? Ask any of them who is Enyd Blyton and you’ll get a blank stare.
The Terminal was great….I doubt it was based on a true stroy….boye people ah lia yes.
Ocean 11 was excellent, but they shouldn’t have made the sequel 12, not nearly as good as 11. The other morning I caught for the first time the original oceans 11 on T.V..the one with Frank,Dean and Sammy Davis Jr. The original is also a classic.
Hi Mad Bull-Ocean’s Twelve was a total bore. Haven’t seen The Terminal. May give it a watch.
Have a great day.
I read much Blyton as a kid, and what I remember most… is wondering if that was her real name…
As for Ocean’s 12, I saw 11 (the original one with the rat-pack) a couple years before the remake, and so could have been a little jaded… but I really enjoyed the remake also… it’s a typical ensemble casting of ‘cool’ guys, the plot is secondary and you have to watch it as such. I expect 12 will be the same, with the additional stigma that it’s a sequel (and they rarely live up.) I brought back the DVD from Miami for a friend, along with “House of flying daggers” which I really want to catch… maybe she’ll let me borrow them back…
