My Top Three

Well, the Miss Cayman Islands pageant is drawing to a close. As I have mentioned already, I think they have a very nice bunch of girls who have entered this year, my favourites are Josephine Shibli and Kimberley Arch. In fact, Kimberley Arch reminds me of a famous woman… they have similarly shaped faces and their hair is worn similarly. Can you guess who she reminds me of? Check her pictures out at the Miss Cayman Islands webpage for contestants’ pictures and see if you can guess…

Anyway, those two ladies are my top two. Third position is up for grabs and its hard to select someone because the whole of them NICE! Still, I am going to go out on a limb and select Stephanie Espeut for the number three spot.

The contestants have been out and about quite a lot recently, they have visited the Queen’s Botanical Gardens, Pedro Castle and a number of other places, so that the public can meet and greet them, they have been on TV on the morning time programs and they have had their pictures splashed in the newspapers non-stop! They have been making quite a big deal of them this year. I was a bit surprised at the hype this year based on what transpired last year, but I guess Hurricane Ivan’s effects were still being felt on the previous year’s pageants. As well, the management of the whole business was turned over to a previous Miss Cayman, Jacqueline Terry, and she has been doing a marvelous job, I guess the increased hype is as a result of her vision and dynamism. Respect, Jackie!

The biggest affair they have had was termed “Putting on the Ritz“, it was a black-tie affair held at the Ritz-Carlton Hotel and I hear it was a $2000-a-plate event! :o
My gosh! A nuff money dat, you know! @ J$83 to KY$1, thats J$166,000 a plate! Not monkey money at all! I wonder how many people attended that? Anyway, join me in wishing good luck to all the contestants, especially my two favourites! I wonder if I can sweep this competition in the same way that I swept the Miss Jamaica Pageant recently? (by “swept”, I mean that I selected the top three girls before the finals.) We will just have to wait until September 29th to find out, I guess :)

So, have you guessed who Kimberley Arch reminds me of? Okay, I will tell you…

She sort of reminds me of J-Lo who is shown above in a rather fetching outfit! Do you see the resemblance too?

In other news, I would like you all to join me in extending a warm welcome to a new author at the Tower of Babel blogsite. I won’t tell you who he is, but many of my regular readers will be familiar with him already. Go check my new mystery author out, people, and lets hope that he will blog at the Tower often! :)

  1. No, I’m sorry - I have tried discretion, but the pictures you have just posted have pulled forth my absolute bafflement - what on earth are those Ebanks girls doing in a Beauty contest?

Is it me or are they extremely unphotogenic or something???????

Oh well, my status may never come to be now, but I was unable to hold back any longer…

  2. No, Kimberly does not look like J-Lo, at least not to me!

  3. J-Lo huh? I was thinking more Gloria Estefan. All those girls look lovely.

  4. No black girls??

  5. I’m not saying she is the spitting image of J-Lo, you know… but the face shape, the hair…. the positions she holds her head in when she poses for pictures… Come on! How oonoo doh see it?

    Leon! Gloria Estefan?

Jam. Girl : If the black girls didn’t enter this year, well what can I say? Two years ago, Miss Cayman was a black girl! Pretty. Tall. Regal looking! Yeah!
But you have to remember, this is not Yard! Yes, they have many black women over here, but the light skinned to dark skinned ratio is way different than it is in Jamaica and remember, the rules of the competition says the contestants have to have status. Plenty of the black girls you see over here are from Jam! And from Honduras, and Barbados too! And T&T! Yeah, there are black Caymanians, but as I said, the ratio doesn’t look like it does in Jamaica at all!

@ Seven : Why you ah draw me into politricks? Anyway, me back broad, me can hangle it. Let me say this: There are always those that you wonder if they are on the same page with everyone else. I don’t agree with you in terms of who you have singled out in this case, but there are always those people who seem to be marching to a different beat. (* shrugs *)

You just have to work wid it.

  6. Stephanie and Josephine have my vote. In that order.

And J-Lo? Well…er…not really…although in that first picture I can see a faint resemblance if I really squint and close my eyes…

@seven : I thought it…you said it. I tip my hat to all of them though. I’d never have the confidence to enter such a contest as this.

  7. @MB -Exqueese me…. are you saying - polytricks or no… that you can see the thought process behind what inspired those Ebanks girls to enter???????????

Be honest… did you see them properly??? Go take another look and come back with an absolutely honest answer that if these girls were your friends, you would encourage them to enter a “BEAUTY PAGEANT???”

    LIAR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

@ Ann - I tried to be nice, because I know going up there isn’t easy for anyone - but honestly - what were they thinking??? They’re not HIDEOUS, or anything, (really), but they are absolutely not Beauty pageant material!!! Why put yourself through that????

Anyways, personally, I think - from the pics I’ve seen, that Stephanie Espeut is a winner….

Whatever - beauty contests are nonsense anyways!!!!!!!!!!!! Bah, humbug…

  8. ps - i left you a dare on iam7 bro…

  9. At a passing glance she kinda got the J.Lo glow!!

Well they each have their own beauty, just not the kind we are used to with beauty pageant contestants! :???:

I think the last young lady Stephanie Espeut, and the J.Lo girl Kimberly Arch might have a chance, as for the others…..

My momma told me if you don’t have anything nice to say….then don’t say anything!!

  10. Well, I looked at her pictures before I clicked MORE and read who you thought she looked like. My conclusion was that she looked like Jennifer Lopez. She’s not the spitting image of J-Lo but, when you say; Which celebrity does she most look like? then J-Lo is it.

I’ll call Shibli, Arch and Rivera in that order. But, don’t rule out Parchment. She is strongly connected, as I’m sure you know. Politricks again…

@Seven: Cayman is a small place and Caymanians are very, well… Let’s just say that they don’t have a large population to draw from. Rebecca Ebanks is stereotypically Caymanian, right down to the name, so I’ll give her a pass but, poor Nicole… Smaddy should tek har aside an talk to har.

  11. lol.

your new job should be a pagent reviewer….

J Lo looks kinda aged in that pic…..

  12. @Say Wah - I was actuallyu thinking the reverse… Oh well, I know I’m being mean, and i don’t mean to be… Just baffled, is all!

  13. SOME AH OONOO WICKED, YOU KNOW!

    Stop single out people, man!

Deelze: I agree with you, man, speak no evil! (Unless it really call fah! )

Cranky Putz: New job? Was I fired from that position and nobady nevah tell me?!!!

I notice that nuff of you are picking Espeut! She nice still, but she cyan beat Shibli! And thats not because I know her father, (or at least, I know who he is… Him tink say him ah pool shark, but I wah give him a royal beatdown whenever we buck up! (I’m only talking about pool, my ninjas! At ease. Him mustn’t tek no lick! Is only pool I talking ’bout… ))

  14. They look like a nice bunch, but I notice they are brownings!

J-lo does look fetching in that pic!

  15. @ MB i see J-Lo yep just the face tho… but i see her….. all that controversy above not touching it :???:

  16. So… sup’m wrong wid brownings or wah? :???:

  17. My yute, sorry to mash up your comments here, but I check seh as site administrator you shudda lock dung comments at my old blog as the spammers are having a heyday! Shout you.

  18. good luck to all the ladies but i think i would have to say that as far as beauty pagents go some of them have a bit more of what it takes to win than others. (that is me being politically correct)

  19. They all look the same.
yes, I guessed J Lo too.

  20. I DONT THINK THAT PPL…SHOULD BE CALLIN “THA EBANKS GIRLS” OUT….. A MATTER A FACT I AM ONE OF THE SISTERS N I DO FEEL AS THO BECKY(REBECCA) HAS ALOT TO OFFER TO THE COMPETITION ……MAYBE IF U WOULD TAKE YOUR HEAD OUT OF UR A** U WOULD RELAIZE!!! I DO FEEL THAT I SHOULD REP HER TO THA FULLEST BUT I ALSO C THAT OTHERS MAY JUST BE IGNORANT N THEY R ENTITLED TO THEY”RE OWN OPINION……I WISH ALL THA GIRLS THA BEST BUT I STILL FEEL IT WASNT RIGHT TO CALL HER OUT LIKE THAT!!!!! IF SHE WAS NOT QUALIFIED SHE WOULDNT PUT HERSELF THROUGH THE PAGEANT !!! THANKZ

  21. @BZG : I know how you feel, I don’t feel that the name calling should have been done either…

  22. I AM JUST TRYING TO BACK HER UP!!!! SHE IS MY SISTER N I COULDNT HOLD MY TOUNGE ON THAT ONE!!

  23. What’s up with this black/white BS. people are people.

  24. Reality check.

I’d just like to take a moment to try to educate the clueless masses. There seems to be some confusion about what a beauty contest is. A beauty contest is where contestants enroll for the “privilege” of being judged, mostly on appearance, against someone else’s arbitrary and subjective interpretation of beauty.

You see, by definition, a beauty contest is about judging people based on their appearance. It is not about what a nice person they are or if they are pious or if they have a good soul. It is about the judge’s idea of beauty against a person’s physical appearance.

Those that do not wish to be judged, or cannot tolerate unfavorable judgment, should not participate in these events and should not put themselves up for public display and judgment.

This is the reality of the situation. BUT I DON SPECT U 2 RELAIZE WUT THAT MEANZ!!!!!!!

  25. IT IS NOT ALLL ABOUT THA LOOOOOOOOOKS IS WHAT I AM TRYING TO TELL U N OTHERS …U HAVE UR OWN OPINION ON WHO LOOKS BETTER BUT TO CALL THAT PERSON OUT ISN’T FAIR JUST KEEP IT TO YOUR OWN DAMN SELF!!!!……..N YES I DOO REALIZE THAT THA COMPETITION IS ABOUT LOOKS …. BUT ALSO THERE ARE OTHER THINGS INVOLVED…THE BODY… THE WAY THEY CARRY THEMSELF…..INTELLIGENCE…N MANY OTHERS…BUT AS I SAID JUST TAKE YOUR ASS OUT OF YOUR HEAD N MAYBE U WILL SEEE!!! BUT I DONT SEE THAT THAT IS LIKELY TO HAPPEN…SO STAY DEY WIT YO IGNORANT THINKING!

  26. My pick is Rebecca Ebanks all the way. No matta what anyone says. she has the height , the walk and the talk! so she going all the way! Big up to Rebecca Ebanks.

Stephanie is way too short! sorry stephanie.

  27. Oh lord. Calm down. Being severely criticized is unfortunately a part of entering such contests. Dont take it to heart. YU skin haffi tuff!

  28. These are all Young Caymanian ladies….why is there so much negative talk?

We (Caymanians) need to support eachother and stop with all the fus. I am not saying that you should not have your favorites, but lets try and keep it clean.
All the contestants are beautiful, talented and Intelligent young Caymanians. I for one think Rebecca Ebanks have the credentials as a Miss Cayman. She is tall, long beautiful hair, very slim, beautiful smile, and she looks very elegant in most of her pictures. She is the tallest in the group. She speaks very intelligent as well. Listening to her on the radio, I have ascertained that most of the other contenstants used her style of speach and words after hearing her talk.
Since there is comparison to a contestant then I would have to say have a look at the Cayman Observer (today’s) and look at the Reign Miss Cayman Ambuyah and Rebecca Ebanks standing next to eachother. Alot of similarities there. I really don’t care what anyone has to comment on that, but I am entitle to my own opinion and there you have it. My best wishes to all the contenstants!

  29. This pageant is not only about beauty who ever wins will represent the Cayman Islands. How can they be ambassadors if we do have several girls that are Hypocrites! We have girls that are scandalous and drug consumers and I am not afraid to say it more than one are but am in shock that [NAME DELETED] entered knowing that she smokes weed like its food for her.

These pageants bring out the truth.

  30. @ THE TRUTH :- Yow! What you said may be the truth or it may not be. As far as I am concerned, you could just be slandering the poor girl in the hopes that people will start to say bad things about her and it will get to the judges and adversely affect her in the competition.

Say what you want about any contestant, whether you think they are smart or dumb, whether you think they are tall or short, pretty or ugly, etc…. why not, its a beauty pageant.

There will be no allegations of drugs, liquor, sex or any such thing with any names. What you say will therefore cast a pall over all the girls, since no one will know which one you are talking about.

As far as it goes, drinking up liquor and burning a little weed is pretty normal behaviour for people in the teen - low 20’s age bracket. Judging from your email name (naughty_69), you’re probably not so pious yourself.

    Your comment has been edited.

  31. My top three are Rebecca parchment, Stephanie, Andrea.

These girls have stage presence and they all have really good physiques. They all have stage experience.

I think Josephine is a very pretty girl but she is a little heavy compared to the other girls, she should get Mrs. photogenic.

  32. This is not about creating any rumors, i can see that you dont know [NAME DELETED] very well but these things are already known out in the street.
Why did u not delete the ebanks name before but u did delete [NAME DELETED], i guess she is your favorite (the weed burner) and it does seem that u are ok with the smoking weed theory, i wonder why.

  33. OKAY!!!!!!!!!!!!! BZG - Been there, done that myself personally!! So, for all your talk and familial support, I have done the Pageant walk and been subject to the talk and criticism and some of that was good and some was bad, and some was sheer bias (color “s…”)

Having said that, I have to say that while we all, as human beings should strive to be as nice to others as possible - we all have natural reactions and feelings about EVERYTHING!!!!

As a Jamaican, I have always lived the Labourite life (JA Politics - MAJOR ISSUE!!!) I have a sister-in-law that is a staunch PNP supporter… We can argue, but agree to disagree…

So, what can I say - having been there - if you place yourself in the public eye, you do, unfortunately, subject yourself to negative publicity!!!

I’m not saying its ‘NICE’ - it just is… You put yourself out there, and people then have their own natural right to voice their opinion!!!

You need to remember that the views people voice from seeing a photo or seeing someone walk down an aisle is really NO MEASURE WHATSOEVER of who they are as a person… As a contestant in a Beauty Pageant, no-one looking on can ever see who they are inside!!!

I really hope that Rebecca and your entire family can hold to this - because its vital if she will go forward with The Miss Cayman Pageant and beyond!!!

I have faced the Miss Jamaica role (personally, one of the ones I feel most embarrassed about, because as I grew as a person, I began to feel that judging someone based on looks - and being an individual going up for such a competition was stupid and no measure of who I am and what I can do…), as well as faced competition for other leadership roles…

The main thing I’ve come to realize is that no-one outside of ME defines who I AM AS A PERSON!!!! If they see me or don’t, that does not make me MORE or LESS of who I am - its what’s INSIDE ME that counts…

So, what does that mean: it means that I may look at your sisters and think they’re not the strongest contestants in a Beauty Pageant - it does not in any way suggest that I have EVER heard them speak, EVER heard what standards they uphold, or EVER been able to determine who they are as people!!!! They could turn out to be candidates for role models in my life, as people, for all I know!!!!

Hey - I never won a Beauty Pageant either - but that doesn’t affect me in the least!!!! My family and friends were so proud of me, despite not ‘winning’,( the quintessential moment at the time), I went home to a red carpet from the front door to the full length mirror in my bedroom!

I was BLESSED to realize that Beauty Pageants are no kind of definition of who you are as a person - thanks to my family!!!

So!!! BZG, instead of fighting it out here - realize that we are all individuals, who have a right to voice our own opinions! Do not take it personally - or allow your sisters to do so - most people who comment on internet blogs live way somewhere else in the world, and do not know or have ever seen your sisters in person!!!

I promise you - no-one who writes here means to personally hurt any individual!!!! The entire point of blogging is to anonymously (to an extent) voice your view…

And you know - I hope that if my comments have been personally hurtful to you or anyone in your family - PLEASE ACCEPT MY APOLOGIES!!! They were not intended to be hurtful…

This is a lesson to all of us, frankly!!! Our commments can be hurtful….

And if you put yourself out there in the public eye, you stand the possibility of being hurt…

Good luck to EVERYONE in the Miss World & Miss Universe Competitions!!! My the best candidate win!!!

  34. @ Seven : I know you would feel a little way when you read her comments…

  35. You know - yes & no !!! Its unfortunate that they were hurt by our comments!!! But I was not hurt by being called a “white girl” during Miss Jamaica crap (rolling my eyes at that one)

What about the comments and scrutiny Britney, Christina, et al have to deal with daily…

Nobody means to be hurtful - but I don’t feel any way to say that I don’t see - from the phoos I’ve seen - either girl as Beauty Pageant candidates - its just unfortunate that they put themselves out there without the strength to deal with opposing opinions - and you know - the world can be a mean place!!!

We’ve all, in one way or another, had to face that!!! So while I think its too bad that they felt hurt by the comments I and some others may have made - I hold to my right to express my opinion!!!

Its a big, bad world out there - we all have to deal with it…

  36. And thats not to mention the comments I had to deal with re: weight, height, etc! Whatever - I’ve only grown from the entire experience!!!
