Of Breakfasts Remembered

I was looking through some old pictures on Compi just now and I came across this one and my mouth became filled with saliva instantly as fond memories came back… ahhh, yes! A breakfast to remember. There was frankfurters sliced up and cooked down with baked beans, with ketchup poured on liberally. There was saltfish and okra on the other side. Mmmm…. Okra slime! Sweet! There was fried ripe plantains, yellow yam and green banana. The only thing that could have been added was a bit of yuca, but they didn’t have ant at the supermarket when I went there that morning.

Yup. That was a good day.

Ok, here is another one. This memory brings a little bit of pain with it though. Here is another breakfast from the past, one that was simpler to get (didn’t have to drive anywhere) and which was also very tasty. That was a Jerked Sardine sandwich. To make it, one needed a can of Jerked Sardines (I think they were Brunswick, but am not sure) which you put into a bowl and crushed and mashed together with a fork. You can add ketchup to taste, and maybe a bit of scotch bonnett pepper if you have it. Then you put it on some of that Natures Own sandwich bread, with the little seeds or whatever they were on the bread. You use some margarine on the bread, then you spread on the jerked sardine. Then you slice a nice juicy tomato and put in in there, and then you eat. Mmmmm! I am actually dribbling just thinking of it.

Where is the sad part? Well, for some reason, I can’t find the jerked sardines in the supermarket anymore. And I was kind of addicted to them too, you know! Over the later part of last year, I would have a jerked sardine sandwich just like that one for breakfast at least twice per week! Now, I can only look at the picture and dream.

This mornin’s breakfast, while quite nice, could not compare to either of the breakfasts above. This morning, I just did a herd boiled egg, used this little thing we have to slice it up and spread it out on some harddough bread, with margarine. It was nice, but…

So what did you have for breakfast? What are your favourite breakfasts?

  3. can I just say, I really don’t like the sound of jerked sardines in a can…sprinkle some watered down jerk seasoning on your sardines, and you have the same thing, made fresh(er).

  4. Interesting breakfast pics:-) I have to say, I absolutely cannot be doing with okra. Who in their right mind likes okra?Apart from you that is?!

  5. Baked beans is a bad recipe for flatulence…suppem that I am already plagued with, so I doh touch dat. No need to dash kerosene oil inna de fire!

Love okra, ’sprecially inna calaloo soup which btw must have some pigs tail inna it with beef….the okra must be hot tho…..nutten worse dan cold and slimy…hot and slimy can work still! (Get your mind outta de gutter!)

I love sardines, never seen or heard of them Jerked in a Tin. You should try King Oscar sardines, the Golden smoked ones are like ambrosia. All that is needed is some vinegar, onion, tomato and scotch pepper. Nyam it wid some Excelsior Water Crackers…..gone clear.

  6. Hmmm… I am quite happy I wrote this post actually. Never thought of making the jerked sardines myself and now Longbench has gone and suggested it, and here now Doctor D is giving me recipee suggestions… this is quite good, I am going to try both things.

By the way, Doctor D., I can handle it cold and slimy or hot and slimy… when I was going to UWI in the night, I learned to tolerate cold food quite well, because when I got home I was either too hungry or too tired to heat up the food. Most room temperature foods doh frighten me at all, I will just box it down same way so.

You know what else makes an irie breakfast (or lunch)… stewed chicken! When you get a little of that with johnny cakes and / or boiled dumplings, it wicked! Another one is boiled eggs and picked up salt fish.

But oonoo can give me more suggestions, man. I will try them all!

  7. aint much of a breakfast person but give me some fishcakes and bakes (festival) and that would be a real nice breakfast for me.

I’m having a omelet and waffles with pancake syrup. What I would really want is some ackee and salt fish with fried dumplings and fried plantains, yummy!

  10. What everybody really have gainst okra? You would really have to be playing wid — no, examining — di food fi see di slime. And you can’t taste it. No steam fish is complete without calalloo and okra.

My grandmother used to fry up the leftover cooked food every morning fi herself. That was not pleasing to me, and she soon started sharing mine out for breakfast. Nothing sweet me so - see mi gawn a school wid oil inna me mout corner; is alright - my shame tree did dead long time.

  15. lol! My mom was also addicted to those jerked sardines and apparently bought them by the half dozen. Now everytime she goes into the supermarket she hunts desperately for them and can never find them.

I wonder why they stopped making them.

recently? Di girl has a post up now about ackee and saltfish would mek you mouth slide right off you face!

  17. ACKEE???? Dis yah Jamaican nuh nyam it! Gimme the saltfish cook up wid onion, escallion, tomato, scotch bonnett and sweet pepper…but keep de ackee!

Long time ne nuh eat some liver wid Canadian style bacon, onion and sweet pepper with some soft boil green banana for Sunday breakfast!

  18. The best breakfast don’t have nuttin to do with food bro..

..but I agree with the Okra, will eat it hot, cold or room temp. I like when you put it in soup or stew, and the seeds swell up in the fridge overnight… I like my food cold, so I don’t burn my lip when I eat it too fast…

…and just so you know this… breakfast in ‘lock-up’ here is usually cold bully-beef & chopped onion, 2 slice a hard-dough bread, and hot Milo… Or franks & beans with green banana… and hot Milo…

    Trouble’s last blog post..Nuff said?

  19. Nevver understood how one can eat so heavy as in pic 1 for bfast. That looks lik elunch and would be lunch for me. I like porridge and bread and eggs etc for bfast
