Every Glove has a Story

Jennifer Gooch, pictured with some lost gloves.

Sometimes zany works. Seriously! What do I mean? Well, I’ll tell you. I was at the gym yesterday, I was doing some crunches and listening to the TV in the background. The TV was on some news station as always. I don’t know why they won’t put it on something else, and sometimes that pisses me off, but I digress, and anyway, that wasn’t that big of a deal to me yesterday. As I was finishing up my second set of twenty five crunches, the news item came on. Apparently there is a woman (her name is Jennifer Gooch) from Texas who had recently moved to Pittsburgh who, in the course of her daily travels, often came across lost gloves.

That is not a big thing… I am sure that happens to many people everyday, and they think nothing of it. But this lady is different. She is sort of zany, IMHO. “I believe that all of these lost gloves have a story. Who did they belong to? How did they come to lose them?”, she said. Now I have heard of people who anthropomorphize animals, but gloves? This woman was doing this to gloves! She went on to talk about the gloves being apart and so on, almost like she was talking about star-crossed lovers who have been split up against their will, and the way they would feel!

She was so intrigued by this imagined story of the gloves that she collected the gloves and created a website (http://www.onecoldhand.com/) where she displays pictures of the lost gloves so that people who have lost a glove can surf on through to see if their glove is one of the lost gloves she has found.

So far, she has reunited some pairs of gloves, I can’t remember how many, but I think the number was quite low. Even more astonishing though, she has galvanised a bunch of people to become “finders”, i.e. they start taking up the gloves they have found and mail them to her, as well as she has inspired a number of other people to start up similar websites across the USA and even across the Atlantic, in London (there seems to be a whole movement of them, I tell you!) AND she has been covered in the media a LOT! Here is a story I came upon about her and her site back before she had reunited even one pair of gloves (that was just 113 days ago, can you believe it?) and since then, she has been mentioned in the New York Times, in a couple of Pittsburgh news papers, in USA Today, on CNN, and now, even here on the Mad Bull’s Blog :)

The thing is, with this zany idea, Jennifer Gooch has become sort of famous, or has at least, she has received / is receiving a lot of recognition!

Now I don’t think about achieving such recognition myself all that often, I mean, I am not dying to be recognised like that, but I guess all of us bloggers want to know that people are out there reading what we put up on the web, and I guess we would all like to think people like what we do and that our hits are increasing, and so on. We probably work pretty hard at it most of the time, trying to make our posts interesting, or exciting, or moving… anything to pack the readers in…

Most of the time, we aren’t as successful at it as we would like. But look at how this woman’s site has taken off! And with such a zany idea too! Wow!
And I bet she wasn’t really thinking of all the recognition she could get when she created the site either.

Well… I take my hat off to her! Big up, Miss Gooch! Obviously it was a great idea. You can click on her name to go to a website with more info on her if you like. I think she is interesting, so go on and click through.

Now, what zany thing can I come up with that will just take off like that? You can all help me too… give me your suggestions in the comments nuh?

  5. @ Irie Diva: She has them send her a picture of their glove, so she can match it with the glove they are claiming. Still, no one would really want to steal one glove out of a pair. You need them both for perfect utility, unless you’re homeless and just want two gloves, matched or mismatched. But if you’re homeless, probably you wouldn’t be able to surf into her site anyway.
