Dancehall Worse than Gay Kissing
Some time back, say about a month to a month and a half ago, someone posted a video on Youtube. The video was shot at a dance held in downtown George Town and it had a rather vulgar display of “dancing” in it. The video was captioned “Cayman Dancehall April 2008″. Word of the video’s existence got out and the video was watched ad nauseum by all and sundry, and there was a general feeling of shame and disgust by many Caymanians (”That is definitely not Caymanian culture!”), so much so that it became the topic of much veranda (and other forms of) talk, it was the hottest topic on the airways and it was looked at by the police and even brought up and discussed in the Legislative Assembly with a view to seeing if there were any laws broken so that they could punish somebody and how they could prevent such a thing from happening again.
With all the discussions, it came out that the girls who were involved in the dirtiest “dancing” were only about 14 or so! (Ah which part dem parents did deh? How dem allow dem young daughter fi deh a street at dance?!
)
I didn’t write about it at the time because when all the furore broke out about the video, either the person who posted it up removed it or somehow the content was blocked, and if you can’t watch the video, well, much of the punch is taken away from whatever I would have to say. I was told recently that the video was available again, and so here is a link to watch it if you want to. (Note that you will have to login to Youtube and confirm your age. They don’t want minors watching that ish)
So, what do you think of the stuff in that video? A Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) here commented that what went on in the video was worse than the public gay kissing event that occurred here in Cayman recently! What do you think?
What are my thoughts on that video? Well, first and foremost, thats not really dancing. Second, if I saw my fourteen year old daughter dancing like that, well, I would feel like I had failed to instill in her any appropriate moral values, and then she would have to be locked down for awhile, and also made to see the folly of her ways! Actually, if I saw my son dancing like that in public, I would take issue with it! He would have to undergo lockdown too! I would have to counsel him, let him know that women are not to be treated that way, even when they are misguided enough to think its all in good fun.
Should anyone be punished legally for the stuff that occurred on the video? Maybe the guy and the girl who destroyed the plant! Thats just total disrespect for other people’s property! ![]()
Generally, I don’t think that this was a legal matter as such. The parents of those girls have a lot of work to do though….
When I heard about the girl’s ages as well, I almost peed my pants. Again, I have two words: Bitch Slap!
Again, its as if one has to watch the video, and take notes for some new positions and experiments for the bedroom. This was obviously not the first time for the little chickadees either.
Also, the MLAs need to get their focus straight. How did the young chickeys get into an event that was selling alcohol??? They need to go after the flipping promoters (and night clubs!) that allow the likke children in there to cavort and carry on! We can take it back to the parents, but the organisers need to start requesting ID as well!
BTW - With respect to the gay kisser…would they have gwaan so if it was two women?
Somehow, I thinketh not. They would have tittered, stared and whispered behind their hands.
Dyam double standard!
Darn it, can’t view the video!
SO Im left to my immagination. These kids learnt the dance from somewhere else, most likely their parents, older sisters etc.
I remember when dirty dancing used to be throwing your leg up on a dude in a moment of passion, now its hummping on the floor and touching yourself, or dancing with a fellow girlfriend. Sex is so passe, they are all doing it, and no one’s falling in love any more either….
The world’s just not an innocent place anymore…

@ CP: You probably can view the video, you will just need to register with Youtube and then confirm your age. Try again.
First off 13 and 14, i would first separate them end of friendship for them both then sit down and have a looong talk.
Where do the men get off behaving like that too they are also to blame. What is this world coming to, that was disgusting. I say punish the club owner for not ID’ing, the parents for not knowing, the men and the girls. WTH! am so miffed! I wonder where do they all learn this crap and the PDA, if i has a son/daughter i would bust their behinds arrggghhh.
The kissing gays, as a tourist/activitst or whatever you must respect the not only the law but norms and traditions of the place you are visiting. Good example the Islamic Countries, i dare you to disrespect them.Let them go elsewhere if they feel so “discriminated”.
Gish’s last blog post..Why oh why?
I agree that parents and club owners have responsibilities, but we must remember that with music videos on various TV stations, nutten is hidden anymore. Almost every music video has a bed scene, women in skimpy clothing whining, gryrating etc. The internet is choked with porn. So don’t be surprised if youngsters are simply following what they see around them……and btw, I am not saying that it is anything to be proud of either.
I cant see the video either!!!!!
The video of this “dancing” was quite boring. Youtube has up much more risque videos from other dancehalls, there should even be one from passa passa with people grinding in the scoop part of a tractor, with it raised in the air!

i agree with Gish wholeheartedly, esp on the gay part too
i can’t see the vid at work, “surf control” shit
i have to remember to check you back when i reach home.

@ Towne Crier: I think you missed the point, my yute. If this video was boring to you, its only because you must have been desensitized by overexposure to this type of rubbish.
I did see the video with the bull dozer. “Oonoo lif’ de bucket! Lif’ de bucket!”. Ohh, the rubbish that passes as entertainment in Jamaica nowadays!
Even though I haven’t seen the video… And I don’t plan to bother anytime soon… I must agree that the people you said destroyed the plant should be punished… Plants are much too important to destroy for just a single “dance”, they should only be destroyed for important things like making salads and furniture. Those people should be ashamed of themselves, their punishment should not be to pay for the plant’s replacement… That is too easy… They should have to grow a new plant back to replace that one… Then maybe they will appreciate how important plants are!
As for the video itself… What’s next? Maybe some gay tourists dancing with 13 & 14 year-olds in the back of a dump truck? When will the madness end…

Lots of young teens girls have been behaving ‘badly’ for ever in here / in the Caribbean.
And guess who are their “boyfriends”?
BIG ADULT MEN.
When kids go ‘bad’ it’s time for the grown-ups to take a look at what they’re doing.

Did you also hear that the men in the video are married with kids of their own !
Dancehall is just a pit of vulgarity nowadays. This is what many of today’s youth spend their productive years doing. Truly sad.
